Crank cas e Pressure, Chec k

You must read and understand the precautions and guide-
lines in Service Information, Function Group 20, "Engine
Safety Practices, Engine" before performing this proce-
dure. If you are not properly trained and certified in this
procedure, ask your supervisor for training before you per-
form it.

Excessive crankcase blow-by can indicate an engine or en-

gine related component malfunction that allows combustion
gases to enter the crankcase. Symptoms of excessive
crankcase blow-by can be high oil consumption and low
power.

This procedure describes how to measure crankcase blow-

by.

If internal engine damage is suspected, do not perform this

test. Vehicles that fault for high crankcase pressure also do
not require this procedure. This test for excessive blow-by
should be performed when oil carryover is coming from the
crankcase breather or high oil consumption is suspected.

Special Tool 88800381 contains three adapters. Choose

the correct blow-by tool orifice for the engine being
checked. The difference between the tools used to measure
blow-by is the size of the orifice. Three different size orifices
to match the three different size engines are available to ac-
curately measure blow-by. Engine blow-by is dependent of
the volume of intake airflow.

N o t e : MP8 (13L) engine does not require a hose to connect

the adapter to the CCV outlet pipe.

Tool Preparation
1
Position hanger on manometer box and attach with fasteners
provided in kit. Tighten nut and cut off excess screw.
N o t e : This procedure only needs to be performed the first
time the tool is used.

N o t e : The manometer is shipped closed with no fluid.

3
Hang manometer from appropriate device. Slowly add fluid
into one valve opening and allow to settle into tubes.

4
Add fluid until both sides reach the 0 mark on the gauge.

Crankcase Pressure, Check

1
Raise hood to access engine compartment.

2
Connect the correct adapter for the engine being tested to
the crankcase ventilation (CCV) outlet pipe and secure with
hose clamp.
N o t e : MP8 (13L) engine does not require a hose to connect
the adapter to the CCV outlet pipe.

3
Connect the signal hose to the adapter, route and connect
opposite end to the manometer.

W2075672

4
Close hood. Make sure the hose is not pinched.

5
Position the manometer on the drivers door mirror bracket,
secure meter and signal hose using cable ties.

6
Open both 90 valves on the top of manometer to allow liquid
to equalize and to allow for meter to operate properly.

7
Run engine at rated rpm and under load on dynamometer.
When engine reaches operating temperature, record the
steady blow-by meter readings. Make sure that both 90
valves remain open while checking for blow-by pressure.
N o t e : When measuring blow-by, the value can spike initially
as the engine reaches peak power.

A + B = Blow-by Reading

8
Record readings. Open an eService case to report readings.
N o t e : May need to attach oil consumption report.

9
Raise hood.

10
Remove the adapter from CCV outlet and signal hose from
the manometer.

11
Close both valves and remove the manometer from the mir-
ror bracket.

12
Close hood.
