(a) Differentiate between mechanism, structure and superstructure.
(b) What is a redundant link in a mechanism?
(c) Differentiate between lower and higher pairs with examples.

SECTION – B
Note: Attempt any five questions from this section. [5 x 10 = 50 Marks]
Q.2. What are quick return mechanisms? Where are they used? Discuss the working of any of them with
neat sketch.
Q.3. The crank and connecting rod of a theoretical steam engine are 0.5 m and 2 m long respectively.
The crank makes 180 rpm in the clockwise direction. When it has turned 450 from the inner dead
centre position, determine:
a. Velocity of piston
b. Angular velocity of connecting rod.
c. Velocity of point E on the connecting rod 1.5 m from the gudgeon pin.
d. Velocity of rubbing at the pins of the crank shaft, crank and crank cross head when the
diameters of their pins are 50 mm and 60 mm and 30 mm respectively.
Q.4. (i) Explain with sketches the different types of cams and followers.
(ii) Define the following terms:
a. Trace Point b. Base Circle c. Pitch Curve d. Prime Circle e. Pressure angle
Q.5. (i) Deduce expressions for the exact and approximate lengths of belt in an open belt drive.
(ii) A shaft rotating at 90 r.p.m. is to transmit 10·5 kW to another shaft by a (weightless) flat belt of
11·5 cm width and 12 mm thickness by open belting arrangement. The driven shaft is to run at 225
r.p.m. The distance between shaft centres is 2·75 meters. Smaller pulley diameter = 60 cm. Calculate
the stress in belt, assuming 𝜇𝜇 to be 0·25.

Q.6. In a reverted epicyclic gear train, the arm A carries two gears B and C and a compound gear D-E. The
gear B meshes with gear E and gear C meshes with gear D. The number of teeth on gears B,C and D
are 75, 30 and 90 respectively. Find the speed and direction of gear C when gear B is fixed and the
arm A makes 100 rpm clockwise.

Q.7. Derive an expression for the magnitude of coriolis component of acceleration.

Q.8. What are straight line mechanisms? Describe one of them with neat sketch.
Q.9. (i) Define path of contact, arc of contact and contact ration. Also derive the expression for path of
contact.
(ii) Define the fundamental law of gearing. Derive the condition that must be satisfied for two
bodies having constant velocity ration.
SECTION – C
Note: Attempt any two questions from this section. [2 x 15 = 30 Marks]
Q.10. (i) Draw a sketch of a single plate clutch and label its various parts. Why is “uniform wear theory”
adopted for calculating the power which may be transmitted through this clutch?
(ii) A thrust shaft of a ship has 6 collars of 600 mm external diameter and 300 mm internal
diameter. The total thrust is 100 kN. If 𝜇𝜇= 0·12 and speed of rotation of shaft is 90 r.p.m., find the
power loss due to friction. Assume uniform pressure on thrust bearing surfaces.
Q.11. (i) Prove that the maximum length of arc of contact between a pair of gear tooth to avoid
interference is (r+R) tanϕ.
(ii) Two mating gears have 20 and 40 involute teeth of module 10 mm and 20° pressure angle. If the
addendum on each wheel is such that the path of contact is maximum and interference is just
avoided, find the addendum for each gear wheel, path of contact, arc of contact and contact ratio.
Q.12. (i) Deduce expressions for velocity and acceleration of the follower when it moves with SHM?
(ii) Draw the profile of a cam with roller reciprocating follower. Axis of the follower passes through
axis of the cam. Roller diameter is 5 mm and minimum radius of cam equals 20 mm. Total lift is 25
mm. The cam has to lift the follower with S.H.M. during 180º of cam rotation and then allow the
follower to drop with uniform velocity during remaining 180º of cam rotation.Determine the
maximum velocity and maximum acceleration on the outward stroke. Cam rotates at uniform r.p.m.
of 100 r.p.m.
