SECTION A
Q.1. Attempt all parts. Write answer of each part in short. [2 x 10 = 20 Marks ]
(a) Differentiate between repeated and reversed cyclic stresses.
(b) Write the series factor for R10 series in preferred number.
(c) The stress state in a machine member is given as follows. = 20MPa; =7MPa; = 4MPa. Find
the principal stresses.
(d) Write down the values of included thread angles for Acme, Trapezoidal and square threads.
(e) Write the relation between theoretical stress concentration factor (Kt), fatigue stress concentration
factor (Kf) and notch sensitivity q.
(f) Define efficiency of a riveted joint.
(g) What is transmission shaft? Also differentiate between shaft and axle.
(h) Write the function of key.
(i) A helical spring has wire diameter = 5 mm, total number of coil = 16 and free length = 130 mm.
Find the pitch.
(j) Designate the following materials:
a. Grey cast iron with ultimate tensile strength of 300 N/mm2
b. Plain carbon steel with 0.4% carbon and 0.8% manganese.
SECTION B
Note: Attempt any five questions from this section. [5 x 10 = 50 Marks]
Q.2. (i) A bolt is subjected to a tensile load of 25 kN and a shear load of 10 kN. Determine the diameter of
the bolt according to
(a) Maximum principal stress theory
(b) Maximum shear stress theory.
Assume factor of safety as 2.5, yield point stress in simple tension= 300N/mm2
(ii) A flat bar made of brittle material as
shown in Fig. 1 is subjected to an axial
load of 50 kN . If the stress in the bar is
to be limited to 100 N/mm2, determine
the thickness of the bar.

Q.3. A power screw having double start square thread of 32 mm nominal diameter and 5 mm pitch,
is acted upon by an axial load of 12 kN The inner and outer diameters of the screw collar
surface are 20 mm and 50 mm respectively. The coefficient of thread friction and collar friction may
be assumed as 0.15 and 0.20 respectively. The screw rotates at 24 rpm. Assume uniform
wear condition. Determine
(i) Torque required (ii) Overall efficiency of the screw.
Q.4. The blow off pressure for a safety valve is 1.5 MPa with the maximum lift of the valve as 14 mm. The
valve diameter 75 mm is loaded with spring index of 5.5 and an initial compression of 40 mm.
Maximum permissible shear stress for the spring material is 500 MPa and G = 80 GPa. Design the
spring.
Q.5. (i) A solid shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 3.46 kN-m and a torsional moment of
11.5 kN-m. The shaft is made of C45 steel and factor of safety is 6. Find the diameter of shaft.
(ii) A square key is required for fixing a pulley on the shaft, which is 50 mm in diameter. The pulley
transmits 10kW power at 200 rpm to the shaft. The key is made of steel 45C8 ( = = 380
N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 3.Determine the dimensions of the key. Assume = 0.577 .
Q.6. Figure shows a bracket supported by four rivets of equal
diameter to withstand an eccentric load of 50 kN. Determine
the size of the rivet taking the permissible shear stress in the
rivet equal to 80 MPa.
Q.7. A steel rod having = 793.4 MPa, = 552.1 MPa and 1 =
448.2 MPa is subjected to an axial load fluctuating between
1 kN and 3 kN. Determine the diameter of the rod required based on a factor of safety of 2.
Q.8. (i) Discuss the advantages of standards in machine design.
(ii) Write short notes on design process.
Q.9. What is Wahls correction factor? Also define the following terms used in compression spring:
(a) Solid length (b) Free length (c) Compressed length (d) Spring rate

Q.10. A rigid type of coupling is used to connect two shafts transmitting 15kW at 200rpm. The shaft keys
and bolts are made of C45 steel and the coupling is of cast iron. Design the coupling.
Q.11. A shaft is subjected to bending moment varying from -200 N m to +500 N m and a varying torque
from 50 Nm to 175 Nm. If material of the shaft is 30C8, stress concentration factor is 1.85, notch
sensitivity is 0.95 reliability 99.9% and factor of safety is 1.5, find the diameter of the shaft.
Q.12. Design the longitudinal riveted joint for a boiler of diameter 2 m taking the permissible pressure as
25 MPa. Assume the tensile, shear and compressive stresses for the material of shell and rivets as 90
MPa, 60 MPa and 120 MPa respectively.
