Noncitrus Fruit Highlights
In 2015, the Nations utilized production of the leading noncitrus fruit crops totaled 18.4 million tons, down 4 percent
from 2014. Fresh utilized production for 2015 noncitrus fruit crops totaled 7.68 million tons, down 7 percent from the
previous year. Processed utilized production totaled 10.7 million tons, down 2 percent from 2014.
The value of utilized production for 2015 noncitrus fruit crops totaled 16.1 billion dollars, down 2 percent from the
previous year. Bearing acreage for major deciduous fruit crops totaled 1.71 million, down 1 percent from 2014. Bearing
acreage for miscellaneous noncitrus fruits totaled 364,030, up 1 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage for nuts totaled
1.47 million acres, up 3 percent from the previous year.

Crop Comments
Almonds: Almond utilized production, at 1.63 million tons, was up 5 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage for almonds
continued to increase, totaling 890,000 acres in 2015. Yield, at 2,140 pounds per acre, was down 10 pounds from
2014.The 2015 utilized almond crop was valued at 5.33 billion dollars, 28 percent less than the previous year. The price
per pound of almonds, at $2.84, declined 29 percent from 2014.
Apples: Total apple production for 2015 is estimated at 10.0 billion pounds, down 15 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage
totaled 315,880, down 2,300 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was down 15 percent to 31,700
pounds per acre. The all price for the 2015 crop, at 34.2 cents per pound, was up 8.5 cents per pound from the previous
season. United States total value for the 2015 season total $3.39 billion dollars, up 18 percent from the 2014 season.
Apricots: Total apricot production for 2015 is estimated at 41,657 tons, down 36 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage
totaled 9,620, down 1,200 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was down 28 percent to 4.33 tons
per acre. The all price for the 2015 crop, at 1,010 dollars per ton, was up 23 percent from the previous season. United
States total value for the 2015 season totaled 41.7 million dollars, down 21 percent from the 2014 season.
Avocados: Utilized production for 2015-2016 is estimated at 223,960 tons, up 29 percent from the previous year. The
California crop, accounting for 88 percent of the United States utilized production, is up 40 percent from 2014-2015.
Acreage in the United States is up slightly from the previous season to 59,280. The value of the 2015-2016 crop is down
from the 2014-2015 crop year in all States while the price is down in California and Hawaii.
Bananas: Hawaiis total production for 2015, at 12.0 million pounds, was up slightly from 2014. Bearing acreage totaled
830, down 30 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was up 4 percent to 14,500 pounds per acre.
The all price for the 2015 crop, at 91.3 cents per pound, was up 9.3 cents per pound from the previous season. Hawaii
total value for the 2015 season totaled 10.9 million dollars, up 10 percent from the 2014 season.
Blackberries: Total 2015 United States blackberry production is estimated at 51.3 million pounds, up 13 percent from
2014. Harvested acreage totaled 6,920 acres, up 820 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 7,360 pounds
per acre was down slightly from the previous year.
Cultivated blueberries: Total 2015 United States cultivated blueberry production is estimated at 560 million pounds,
down 3 percent from 2014. Harvested acreage totaled 89,820, up 6 percent from the previous season. The average yield, at
6,160 pounds per acre was down 8 percent from the previous year.
Wild blueberries: Total 2015 United States wild blueberry production is estimated at 101 million pounds,
down 3 percent from 2014. Harvested acreage totaled 22,400, down 2 percent from the previous season. The average
yield, at 4,510 pounds per acre was down 2 percent from the previous year.
Boysenberries: Total 2015 United States boysenberry production is estimated at 2.46 million pounds, down 4 percent
from 2014. Harvested acreage totaled 350 acres down 150 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at
7,000 pounds per acre was up 37 percent from the previous year.
Sweet cherries: Utilized sweet cherry production for 2015 at 336,836 tons, is down 6 percent from 2014. Six of the eight
estimating States (Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington) showed decreased production from last
season, while California and New York showed an increase.
Growers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington reported a warm and relatively dry winter. A freeze event
in November 2014 led to loss of trees that were not yet dormant. In the spring, rain events and above average temperature
pushed maturity ahead of the normal pace and harvest earlier than normal. Utah growers reported a hard freeze that had a
severe negative effect on production in much of the State. In Michigan, a hard freeze in late May 2015 had a detrimental
effect on production as well. Overall, yield for the State is expected to be less than the previous year.

In California, harvest began early with shipments completed by the second week in June. Production increased from
2014s record low, but was still below 2013. In New York, growers reported a better than average crop in 2015.
Tart cherries: Utilized tart cherry production for 2015 is estimated at 251 million pounds, down 16 percent from 2014.
Four of the seven estimating States (Michigan, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin) showed decreased production from last
season, while New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington showed an increase.
In Michigan, the largest producing State, a hard freeze during late May 2015 significantly reduced yields. In Wisconsin,
growers reported damage to trees from harsh winter weather. Several growers no longer had production due to tree
mortality. Oregon and Utah growers experienced a freeze event led to loss of some trees that were not yet dormant.
In New York and Pennsylvania growers reported a crop that resulted in good production. Favorable conditions contributed
to good yields. In Washington, rains and above average temperatures during spring pushed maturity and harvest ahead of
the normal pace.
Coffee: Hawaii utilized coffee production is estimated at 34.7 million pounds (cherry basis) for the 2015-2016 season,
down 5 percent from the previous season. Bearing acreage totaled 6,900, down 900 acres from the previous year. Average
yield, at 5,300 pounds (cherry basis) per acre, was up 580 pounds from the previous year. Many producers reported they
had to prune back their trees or cut the trees down and replant due to CBB damage.
Cranberries: Total 2015 United States cranberry production is estimated at 8.56 million barrels, up 2 percent from 2014.
Harvested acreage totaled 40,900, up 300 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 206.7 barrels per acre was
up 2 percent from the previous year.
Dates: California utilized date production is estimated at 43,600 tons for the 2015 season, up 31 percent from the previous
season. Bearing acreage totaled 10,000, unchanged from the previous year. Average yield, at 4.36 tons per acre, was
up 1.02 tons from 2014. The large production increase was due to immature trees coming into full production.
Fig: California utilized fig production is estimated at 30,200 tons for the 2015 season, down 10 percent from the previous
season. Bearing acreage totaled 6,800, down 200 acres from the previous year. Average yield, at 4.44 tons per acre, was
down 0.33 tons from 2014. Acreage continued to be removed from production.
Grapes: Utilized grape production for 2015 is estimated at 7.68 million tons, down 2 percent from the revised 2014 total.
The California crop, which accounted for 89 percent of the 2015 United States utilized grape production, was down
1 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage, at 1.02 million for the 2015 season, was down 1 percent from the
revised 2014 acreage. California bearing acres for the 2015 season is down 9,000 acres from the previous year. In 2015,
the value of utilized production totaled $5.56 billion, down 4 percent from the revised 2014 value of $5.82 billion.
Californias 2015 utilized production was valued at $4.95 billion, accounting for 89 percent of the overall United States
value of utilized production.
Hazelnuts: The hazelnut crop, at 31,000 tons, is 14 percent below the previous year. Bearing acreage remained
unchanged at 30,000 acres. Yield, at 1.03 tons per acre, was down 14 percent from 2014. Hazelnut utilized crop value, at
86.8 million dollars, was 33 percent below last year. Price per ton, at $2800, declined 22 percent from 2014.
Kiwifruit: Utilized production in California for 2015 totaled 23,100 tons, down 17 percent from the previous year.
Acreage was down 100 from the previous season to 4,000. The value of the 2015 crop was down 7 percent from the 2014
crop year to 30.9 million dollars, however the price for the 2015 season was up 150 dollars per ton to 1,340 dollars.
Macadamia Nuts: Macadamia nut production totalled 23,500 tons, up 2 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage remained
unchanged at 16,000 acres while yield increased 2 percent from the previous year. The 2015 utilized macadamia nut crop
was valued at 45.6 million dollars, up 14 percent from 2014. The price per pound of macadamia nuts was 10 cents higher
than 2014.
Nectarines: Utilized nectarine production is estimated at 164,600 tons for the 2015 season, down 20 percent from the

previous season. Bearing acreage totaled 20,200, down 2,300 acres from the previous year. Average yield, at
8.30 tons per acre, was down 0.82 ton from the previous year.
Olive: California utilized olive production is estimated at 179,000 tons for the 2015 season, up 88 percent from the
previous season. Bearing acreage totaled 36,000, down 1,000 acres from the previous year. Average yield, at
4.97 tons per acre, was up 2.40 tons from the previous year.
Papaya: Hawaiis total production for 2015, at 27.3 million pounds, was up 16 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage
totaled 1,500 acres, unchanged from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop, at 18,200 pounds per acre, was
up 16 percent. The all price for the 2015 crop, at 41.9 cents per pound, was down 6.1 cents per pound from the previous
season. Hawaii total value for the 2015 season totaled 10.6 million dollars, down 6 percent from the 2014 season.
Peaches: Utilized peach production for 2015 is estimated at 825,415 tons, down 2 percent from the previous year. The
California crop, accounting for 73 percent of the United States utilized peach production, is down 2 percent from 2014.
In California, Freestone growers reported a fast harvest in 2015 due to dry conditions. Growers reported decreased
volumes during harvest due to midseason rains but indicated that overall fruit quality was good. Clingstone full bloom
occurred on schedule and growers completed spraying and pruning by the end of March. The drought situation remained
a concern for growers, however many orchardists were able to offset reduced irrigation district water deliveries by
utilizing wells to pump groundwater.
In South Carolina, trees received the necessary chill hours to deliver a good crop. A cold snap in late-March did some
mild damage to the crop across the State. Peaches in the Upstate region were affected most by the freeze and many
producers reported a total loss. Central South Carolinas crop was not affected as much by the freezing temperatures.
Production was reported as steady with harvest starting in early-May, slightly behind the five-year average. Harvest was
complete by the end of August. Georgias peach crop was hindered by freezing temperatures in late-March. Harvest began
the second week of May and was completed by mid-August.
In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the crop varied by location, with freezing temperatures, wind, and drought all reported.
Some growers reported a bumper crop while others reported a total loss. Michigans bearing acreage showed a continued
decline, with many trees dying from sub-zero temperatures during the last two winters.
Pears: Utilized pear production for 2015 is estimated at 807,130 tons, down 3 percent from the 2014 estimate. Three of
the six estimating States (Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Washington) showed decreased production from last season, while
California, New York, and Oregon showed an increase.
In California, harvest began in the Sacramento-San Joaquin region the first week of July. Generally fair weather was
reported during harvest, although there were several very hot days. In Oregon and Washington, fruit size was smaller
than expected. Cork spot was prevalent throughout the region.
In Michigan, damage caused by this years harsh winter, along with strong storms and heavy rains, lowered pear yield and
production. New York growers reported lower quality due to hail, frost, and drought. In Pennsylvania, frost lowered fruit
quality and quantity.
Pecans: Pecan utilized production in 2015 is estimated at 254 million pounds, down 4 percent from 2014. Improved
pecan production, at 225 million pounds, accounts for 89 percent of the total. The value of the 2015 utilized pecan crop
increased 8 percent from the previous year to 560 million dollars. Improved pecan production again accounted for the
majority of the total, increasing 8 percent from 2014, to 521 million dollars. The price per pound for all pecans, at $2.20,
was $0.24 higher than 2014.
Pistachios: Pistachio utilized production, at 135,000 tons is 47 percent lower than 2014. Bearing acreage, at 233,000
acres, continued to increase from previous years. Yield, at 1,160 pounds per acre, was down 50 percent from 2014. The
pistachio utilized crop value for 2015, at 670 million dollars, is down 64 percent from previous year. Price per pound
declined 31 percent from 2014 to $2.48. The majority of the crop, 76 percent, was sold in shell.

Plums: Total plum production for 2015 is estimated at 106,000 tons, down 6 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage totaled
17,800, down 200 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was down 5 percent to 5.96 tons per acre.
The all price for the 2015 crop, at $998 per ton, was up 9 percent from the previous season. United States total value for
the 2015 season totaled $105 million, up 2 percent from the 2014 season.
Prunes: Total prune production for 2015 is estimated at 112,000 tons, up 4 percent from 2014. Bearing acreage totaled
47,000, down 1,000 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was up 0.13 ton to 2.38 tons per acre.
The all price for the 2015 crop, at $2,010 per ton, was down 19 percent from the previous season. United States total value
for the 2015 season totaled $221 million, down 17 percent from the 2014 season.
Prunes and Plums: Prunes and plums utilized production for 2015 is estimated at 9,650 tons, down 33 percent from
2014. Bearing acreage totaled 2,420, down 80 acres from the previous season. Total yield for the 2015 crop was down
1.93 tons to 4.00 tons per acre. The all price for the 2015 crop, at $553.00 per ton, was up 14 percent from the previous
season. United States total value for the 2015 season totaled $5.34 million, down 24 percent from the 2014 season.
Raspberries: Total 2015 United States raspberry production is estimated at 263 million pounds, up 15 percent from 2014.
Harvested acreage totaled 20,320 acres, up 770 acres from the previous season. The average yield, at 12,600 pounds per
acre was up 11 percent from the previous year.
Strawberries: Total production for 2015 is at 30.9 million cwt, up 2 percent from 2014. Harvested acres totaled 58,010
acres, down 1,885 acres from last season. Total yield for the 2015 crop is up 5 percent to 532 cwt per acre. The all price
for 2015 crop at $71.90 cents per cwt is down $21.40 cents from the previous season. The total value of production for the
2015 season is 2.2 billion dollars down 21 percent from the 2014 season.
Walnuts: Walnut utilized production in 2015, at 603,000 tons, was up 6 percent from the previous year. Bearing acreage
for walnuts continued to increase from previous seasons, totaling 300,000 acres in 2015. Yield, at 2.01 tons per acre, was
up 2 percent from 2014. The 2015 utilized walnut crop was valued at 977 million dollars, 48 percent less than the previous
year. The majority of the utilized walnut production, 69 percent, was sold shelled. Walnut prices declined 51 percent to
$1,620 per ton in 2015.
Definition of Terms
Bearing acreage: An orchard, grove, or vineyard is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to
produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop. Bearing age is a function of many factors including variety,
rootstock, year planted, etc.
Apple crop: Apple production estimates are published only for commercial orchards, according to the laws governing
crop production reports (7 U.S.C 411b). Commercial orchards, under these laws, are defined as orchards of 100 or more
bearing trees.
Harvested not sold: Fruit of marketable quality that was picked but not sold for various reasons up to 2 percent of total
production is considered normal seasonal loss and is excluded from total production. Reported values are above and
beyond these normal seasonal losses. Beginning in 2015, all quantities harvested not sold are included in total production.
Total production: The quantity of a crop actually harvested plus quantities which would have been acceptable for fresh
market or processing but were not harvested because of economic or natural reasons are included in production estimates.
Unutilized production: The difference between total and utilized production, which is marketable fruit not harvested for
economic or natural reasons and harvested fruit not sold or utilized, is unutilized production.
Unharvested production: Marketable fruit produced, but not harvested for various reasons, is unharvested production.
Unharvested amounts up to 2 percent of total production are considered normal seasonal losses and are excluded from

total production. Published estimates of unharvested production represent quantities above and beyond these normal
seasonal losses.
Utilization: These estimates refer to the first utilization, not necessarily the final utilization of a crop. For example, frozen
fruit includes some fruit that may be later used for making preserves. Grade-outs for fresh market fruit which are
processed are included in the processing quantity. Fruit graded-out from canning or freezing and utilized for juice is
included with juice.
Utilized production: The amount of a crop sold plus the quantities used at home or held in storage represents utilized
production.
Yield per acre: Unless otherwise stated, yield per acre is based on total production.
Price and Value Definitions
Price: Except where specified as monthly, prices in this report represent the Market Year Average (MYA) price. For a
crop sold for both fresh market and processing, the total crop MYA is a weighted average of the fresh and processing
prices.
Prices for fresh fruit represent the average price producers receive at the point of first sale. This is commonly referred to
as the average price as sold. The exception is fresh fruit sales in California, Michigan (apples only), New York (apples
only), and Washington which are equivalent returns at packinghouse door.
Prices for fruit sold for processing are equivalent returns for fruit delivered to the processing plant door except for
cranberries, California olives, and freestone peaches, which are priced at the first delivery point.
Value: Crop value estimates in this report cover the marketing season or crop year and should not be confused with cash
receipts which are based on a calendar year.

Statistical Methodology
Survey Procedures: Non-probability monthly grower surveys are used to collect crop condition, yield, acreage, and
production data. These fruit inquiries are generally mailed surveys during the growing season. Telephone follow-up of
mail survey non-respondents is used to ensure adequate coverage. Special grower disposition surveys are conducted at the
end of each season to provide additional details about the crop. They provide indications of the quantity used on farms,
the quantity sold directly to consumers, unharvested production, and production not sold or utilized. All fruit and nut
processors or shellers are also surveyed annually to determine quantity handle, utilization, and the origin of the
commodity.
Estimating Procedures: Information obtained from the non-citrus fruits and nuts grower surveys along with federal
administrative data is used to establish estimates of bearing acres, yield, total production, utilized production, price, and
value. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates.
Revision Policy: Final survey indications and check data for most non-citrus fruits and nuts are available prior to
submitting utilization estimates. As a result revisions are allowed for a few crops in the spring. End-of-season estimates of
production are made following harvest and are subject to revision the following year based on a thorough review of all
available data.
Reliability: To assist users in evaluating the reliability of the July noncitrus fruit total production estimates, the "Root
Mean Square Error," a statistical measure based on past performance, is computed. The deviation between the first July
total production estimate and the final estimate is expressed as a percentage of the final estimate. The average of squared
percentage deviations for the latest 20-year period is computed. The square root of the average becomes statistically the
"Root Mean Square Error." Probability statements can be made concerning expected differences in the current estimate
relative to the final end-of-season estimate, assuming that factors affecting this year's estimate are not different from those
influencing recent years. For example, the "Root Mean Square Error" for the July apple total production estimate is
1.4 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current production estimate will not be above or below the
final estimate by more than 1.4 percent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90 percent confidence level) that the difference will not
exceed 2.4 percent.
The following table is included with a 19-year record for selected crops of the differences between the first July total
production estimate and the final estimate. Using apples again as an example, changes between the first July estimate and
the final estimate during the last 19 years have averaged 51.1 thousand tons, ranging from less than half of a thousand tons
to 191.4 thousand tons. The first July estimate has been below the final estimate 6 times and above 13 times. This does not
imply that the July estimate this year is likely to understate or overstate the final production.
