Dimensioning

To create dimensions, use the dimension toolbar. If its not already displayed in the screen, right click any
tool icon and select dimension from the list. The dimension toolbar should look like this:

The dimension toolbar has several dimensioning or annotation tools inside it, depending on the type of
dimensioning you need. Before, we proceed to actual dimensioning, you must understand some basic
elements of a dimension. The following figure has an example dimensions. The figure and dimensions in
bold lines are the sample while the things in unbold lines are labels.

Extension lines are used to separately distinguish the figure and the dimensions. Extension line
should not be touching the figure.
Offset from origin is the distance between the tip of the extension line and the figure.
Arrow Head are used to end the dimension line. Make sure the arrow head size is large enough to be
visible.
Dimension Line starts at extension line 1 and ends at extension line 2.
Text displays the actual value of the dimension. Make sure the text height is large enough to see.
Offset from Dimension Line Distance between the bottom of text and the dimension line. Make sure
that that text is not too close to the dimension line.
Extend Beyond Dimension Line is used to identify that the figure is a dimension.

To change the dimension style settings,

1. Click the dimension style icon. or go to dimensions from the menu bar, then click dimension
style
You should be able to see this after clicking on the icon:
2. Click the modify button to change the settings of ISO-25 dimension style. You should be able to see
the following figure:

3. Select the tab that you want to edit. Example select the text tab. And then change the text height from
2.5 to 5.
4. Click OK when finished.
Now that we understand the different element of a dimension, we are now ready to create one.

In order to use the dimension tools properly, you must make sure the object snap is enabled. To enable object
snap, type os and press enter to open the object snap tab.

I. Linear dimension
Linear dimension are used to create vertical and horizontal dimensions. Even if you select diagonal extension
line origins, it will still display the horizontal or vertical dimension.

1. Click the icon


2. Select the first extension line origin using object snap.

3. Select the second extension line origin using object snap.

4. Click a space just above the figure to place the dimension line.

II. Aligned Dimension


This is used to create dimensions parallel to the first extension line origin and the second extension line
origin. The procedure is the same with linear dimension.
III. Radius or Diameter Dimension
This is used to create dimensions for circles and arcs.

1. Click the icon


2. Select an arc or circle using.
3. Click a space just beside the figure to place the text.
