Earn A Master of Science Degree in Sweden Through GWST

During the fall of 2016, the Gender and Womens Studies program at the University of Denver
partnered with LUND University, in Sweden, for what is called a 3+1+1 program. If you are a
GWST major at DU, you can apply to this special partnership your junior year of undergrad.
Once accepted, you will spend your senior year at LUND University undergrad, fulfilling
requirements to soon lead you into the grad school curriculum. You can then earn a Master of
Science degree in Gender Studies in the one-year program.

Before attending the abroad experience in Sweden, you must have all common curricular classes
as well as any other major/minors completed. There is also no getting around the +1+1 portion of
the program; therefore, student-athletes are exempt from participating, although they can apply
independently for the grad program at LUND. Tuition will be the same as it would be if you
were attending DU for your senior year, but will reduce to around $14,000 for the one-year grad
school. There is some uncertainty about funding, such as FAFSA in the US, for attending the last
+1 year of the partnershipthe staff of GWST is working to find the correct answer to that
concern.

At the latest meeting for GWST students, only four majors of the program showed, which Dr.
Lindsey Feitz says was more than they were expecting. Usually theres only one or two who
show up, but thats just because our program isnt too big yet. Feitz, who is an Assistant
Teaching Professor for the GWST program, has unofficially become the liaison in regards to
communicating with the program at LUND and DU. She has visited the campus of the university
in Sweden twice, Its literally like Hogwarts on steroids, was her explanation of the school.

Just as well, Dr. Hava Gordon, the director of the Gender and Womens Studies program, was
also there to give input on her experiences not only with Gender, but the opportunity at hand. If
I couldve had a Masters degree by the time I was 22 years old abroad, I wouldve jumped at the
opportunity. She described the advantages of completing a Masters of Science abroad while
studying gender, Having actual experience of globalization and other studies of intersectionality
while in a different country looks incredible on a resume, and will lead you in the right direction
if you choose to further your academic career to a PhD.

With one of the smaller programs at the University of Denver, Feitz and Gordon are hoping to
attract more students to study Gender and Women through this partnership. Feitz, having been to
LUND University twice as well as knowing most if not all questions people may have about the
partnership said, I think this is a great attribute to what our program has to offer and hopefully
we will have an even bigger turnout next time.
