KERALA GOVERNMENT TO BAN E-CIGARETTES
The Kerala government decided to ban the production, sale, and advertisement of e-cigarettes in the
view of studies claiming that its use can cause health issues like cancer and heart ailments.
TEACHER EDUCATION PORTAL 'PRASHIKSHAK' LAUNCHED
HRD Minister SmritiIrani launched a teacher education portal, 'Prashikshak', which aims at bringing
quality teachers to Indian schools.
The portal has now been launched for district-level teacher training institutes only and will be extended to the
block-level in future.
NHAI GETS GREEN NOD FOR RS1,246-CR UP ROAD UPGRADATION PROJECT
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has received environment clearance for updgrading the
146-km long carriageway of Kanpur (Chakeri) to Allahabad section of NH-2 in Uttar Pradesh at a cost of
Rs 1,246 crore.
The approval has been given subject to the compliance of the specific and general conditions, the official
said.The total cost of the project would be Rs 1,246 crore.
Railway Ministry to install CCTV cameras at 1000 stations
Railway Ministry will install CCTV cameras at one thousand railway stations across the country.
The camera footage will help investigate incidents taking place at the stations.500 crore rupees have been
earmarked for the purpose under Nirbhaya fund.
Rapid Rural Police Response System launched
In order to provide round-the-clock security and help people make distress calls in rural areas, the
police launched the Rapid Rural Police Response System (RRPRS) across the state.
Addressing mediapersons in Fatehgarh Sahib, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar
said people would get help within 20 minutes of calling at the helpline number 100.
President inaugurates smart model village pilot project
President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated a smart model village pilot project at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
He called it a landmark initiative to replicate the experience in transforming the Presidents estate into a smart
model township in five selected villages in Haryana.
Religious texts to be included in Haryana School Curriculum
The subject of moral education which includes religious texts from 'Bhagavad Gita' (Hindu religion), 'Quran'
(Islam), the 'Bible' (Christianity) and 'Guru Granth Sahib' (Sikhism) will be introduced at a programme to be
held in the Kurukshetra University auditorium on July 5.
Assam to introduce file tracking system for transparency
Assam government has decided to introduce "File tracking" mechanism as part of its effort to bring in
transparency in governance and to allow common people track the position of a file.
Rs.5,000 cr. Central aid sought for Mission Kakatiya
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao requested the Centre to extend an assistance of Rs.5,000 crore for
Mission Kakatiya programme being implemented for the last two years for restoration of minor
irrigation tanks with an objective of water conservation and improving groundwater table.
Govt cancels Rs.200cr green fine on Adani: Reports
As per reports, the Environment Ministry has withdrawn a Rs.200 crore fine imposed on Adani Ports &
SEZ for damaging mangroves, and the local environment near the firm's Mundra Port.
The fine was imposed by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in 2013. Reports claim that
this was the largest ever fine imposed on a firm for environmental damages.
Haryana to develop new Industrial Township at an expense of $5 billion:
The Haryana Government announced that it would develop an industrial township in the state at an
expense of 5 billion dollar.
Under the agreement, HSIIDC and CFLD Company would execute the project as a joint venture (JV).
BRICS Working Group Meeting on Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency begins in Visakhapatnam:
The first meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency commenced on 4
July 2016 in Visakhapatnam.
The Union Power Ministry is hosting the meeting of the Working Group.
India assumed the BRICS chair for 2016 and will accordingly shape and steer the BRICS agenda.
India's first Integrated Defence Communication Network launched:
India's first Integrated Defence Communication Network (DCN) was launched
The DCN was inaugurated by Defence Minister ManoharParrikar at South Block.
The network enables the Army, the Air Force, the Navy and the Special Forces Command to share situational
awareness for a faster decision-making process.
It is the first tri-service communication and IT network of the Armed Forces.
Tripura to get food grains, fuel via Bangladesh:
Essential commodities like food grains and fuel will now be shipped to Tripura via Bangladesh, state
Revenue Minister BadalChowdhury said.
This comes after the inauguration of the revised Inland Water Transit and Trade Protocol that provides third-
country access with Bangladesh.
INS Tarasa, Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft, launched by Indian Navy:
Indian Navy launched the fourth in the series of Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (FO-WJFAC) called
INS Tarasa. It was launched at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata.
The name of the ship, like the previously launched FO-WJFACs, is based on the picturesque island in the
Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal.
World's largest charkha unveiled at Delhi airport:
Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra has unveiled the worlds largest Charkha at
Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, IGI in New Delhi.
The idea behind displaying the Charkha at the airport is to highlight Indias quest to foster an egalitarian society
as demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation.
MoU with Mozambique for import of pulses inked:
The Union Cabinet approved a long-term contract by signing an MoU with Mozambique for the import of
pulses.
The MoU is aimed at promoting the production of pulses in the African country, thereby doubling the trade
between the two nations by 2020-21.
Rajasthan villagers convert barren land into lake:
The residents of Ramsar village worked for five months and converted a barren land in their village into
a lake to conserve water.
Union Cabinet approves Interest Subvention Scheme for farmers:
The Union Cabinet approved the Interest Subvention Scheme for farmers for the year 2016-17.
The Government has assigned a sum of 18276 crore rupees for the purpose.
This scheme will help farmers getting short term crop loan payable within one year up to 3 lakhs rupees at only
4% per annum.
SC-appointed Green Panel recommends high pollution cess of 20-22% on diesel vehicles:
The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) recommended a green cess of 20-
22 percent on diesel vehicles.
EPCA is a Supreme court-appointed Green Panel for Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
NMCG to be launched in Uttarakhand:
National Mission for Clean Ganga launched at Haridwar in Uttrakhand.
The projects will also be launched on the bank of Yamuna in Haryana and Delhi. Under the projects renovation
and modernization of Ghats, redevelopment of sewage treatment plants, tree plantation and conservation of
biodiversity will be undertaken.
Bombay, Calcutta, Madras High Courts renamed:
After a Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that the government has
renamed the Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras High Courts.
These courts, established after an 1862 order by Queen Victoria of Great Britain, will now be called High Courts
of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Rajasthan becomes first state to introduce minimum wages for part time workers:
Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to introduce minimum wages for part time workers.
Labour Department has issued a notification in this regard.
In another decision government has increased minimum wages in all categories of scheduled
employments by Rs 104 per month.
Union Cabinet approves National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme:
The Union Cabinet has approved a National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) for providing
apprenticeship training to over 50 lakh youngsters in order to create more jobs.
The Scheme has an outlay of 10,000 crore rupees and a target of training 50 lakh apprentices by 2019-20.
Union Government constitutes Shankar Acharya Committee to examine desirability and feasibility of new
financial year:
The Union Finance Ministry has constituted four members committee to examine the feasibility and
desirability of having a new financial year.
The committee has been tasked to examine the merits and demerits of various dates for the commencement of
the financial year including the existing date (April to March) by taking into account the various relevant factors.
The committee will be headed by Dr. Shankar Acharya (former Chief Economic Adviser).
Union Government launched National Green Highways Mission:
Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari launched the National Green
Highways Mission (NGHM) in New Delhi.
Under this initiative, plantation drive on 1500 km of National Highways was launched at a cost of about 300
crore rupees.
231 Projects under Namami Gange launched all over country:
Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti inaugurated 231 projects under the Namami Gange Programme.
The projects were inaugurated from Haridwar, Uttarakhand in various locations in different states namely
Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Haryana and Delhi.
NirmalaSitharaman to lead business delegation to Russia:
Commerce and Industry Minister NirmalaSitharaman will lead a delegation of over 110 Indian
companies that will showcase their engineering prowess at a trade fair in Russia.
India is the partner country for 'INNOPROM 2016', which is the largest annual international industrial
trade fair of Russia.
India sets up apparel training centre in Nigeria:
India has set up an apparel training centre in Nigeria to support textiles industry of the west African
country.
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer, and its major export to India is crude.
Second phase of Haritha Haram programme launched in Telangana:
The second phase of Haritha Haram programme of Telangana government was launched in the state .
Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao participated in the plantation programme at Gundrampalli near Chityal in
Nalgonda district by planting a Neem sapling.
Ministers, legislators, officials besides a large number of school children and MGNREGA workers have been
asked to take up similar plantations across the state.
NASSCOM unveils Indias first Centre of Excellence on Internet of Things:
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) unveiled Indias first Centre of
Excellence focused on Internet of Things (CoE- IoT) at its Startup Warehouse in Bengaluru.
The centre was launched in a bid to encourage start-ups to come up with tech solutions centred on Internet of
Things (IoT).
10 inducted into Maha Council of Ministers:
DevendraFadnavis-led Maharashtra government inducted 10 ministers into the state Council while
promoting one existing minister to the Cabinet rank.
Of the 10, six belonged to the ruling BJP, two to ally Shiv Sena, and one each to the
SwabhimaniShetkariSanghatana and the RashtriyaSamajPaksha.
Five of the 10 were inducted as ministers of Cabinet rank.
8 MoUs inked at India-South Africa CEOs forum:
Business leaders from India and South Africa on Friday signed eight MoUs at a CEO forum on the
sidelines of PM NarendraModi's visit to the African country.
The MoUs were signed in sectors including mining, railways, defence and education.
The biggest of the MoUs was signed between a South African port and Cipla, involving investment worth around
$90 million.
PM Modi signs four pacts with South Africa:
PM NarendraModi, who is currently on a five-day tour of Africa, signed four pacts on Friday with South
African President Jacob Zuma.
The agreements are linked to the fields of information and communications technology, tourism, arts and
culture, and science and technology.
PM Modi also sought deeper collaboration with South Africa in the defence sector.
Aurangabad to host first SAARC Tourism Summit:
Maharashtra Tourism has said that the state's Aurangabad town will host India's first SAARC Tourism
Summit during the second week of October.
The two-day summit aims to tap foreign direct investment under the Make in Maharashtra and Make in India
schemes.
Maharashtra Tourism also said that it is planning to set up a Buddhist Centre at Ellora during the summit.
Government rolls out KrishiVigyan Kendra portal for monitoring of farm centres
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh launched an online portal designed to monitor nearly
645 KrishiVigyanKendras (KVKs) across the country.
The KVKs also known as known as farm science centres which have a mandate to assess agri-technology and
demonstrate to farmers application and capacity development, are being set up in rural districts.
Joint issue of postage stamp between Department of Posts and Portugal Post:
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister ShriNarendraModi was apprised of a joint issue of
postage stamps between Department of India Posts and Portugal Post.
Department of Posts and Portugal Post will issue joint postage stamps on the theme of folk dances
(Dandiya of Gujarat)
Kerala Government imposes 14.5 per cent fat tax on Junk Food:
Kerala Government has proposed a Fat Tax on fast food items like burgers, pizzas, donuts and pasta
etc. served in branded restaurants in a bid to discourage the junk food culture.
The first-of its-kind move in the country was announced in the maiden budget of the CPI(M)-led LDF
Government in Kerala presented by Finance Minister Dr. T.M. Thomas Issac.
Kerala announces pension scheme for transgenders:
The Left Democratic Front government in Kerala announced a pension scheme, starting this year, for
transgenders above 60 years of age.
It also announced special education aid for transgender students. Only last year, Kerala became the first state
in India to announce a Transgender Welfare Board that aims to end stigma towards the sexual minority
group.
Film festival on wildlife has begun in Shimla:
A three-day Woodpecker Environment and Wildlife Film Festival has begun at historic Gaiety Theatre in
Shimla.
The focus of the festival is the critical environment and wildlife conservation issues like climate change, forest
conservation, biodiversity and man-animal conflict and success stories will also be showcased in it.
Government starts SUUTI stake sale process:
The government has initiated the process to sell its stake in 51 companies held through the Specified
Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India (SUUTI) to boost revenue by about Rs.50,000 crore.
The asset sales would help the government meet its disinvestment revenue target of Rs.56,500 crore for 2016-
17 and reduce the fiscal deficit projected at Rs.5.33 lakh crore.
Government plans to clean 10 iconic places under Swachh Bharat mission:
Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Narendra Singh Tomar has said that government will carry
out a drive to clean ten iconic places in the country, including TajMahal, Vaishno Devi temple and Ajmer
Sharif, as part of a pilot project under the Swachh Bharat mission.
Inaugurating a two-day National Workshop in New Delhi on Special Cleanliness drive, Mr Tomar said, his
ministry is in the process of selecting 100 iconic places for cleaning under the mission and most will be either
tourist or religious spots.
Rs 500 crore to expedite development of Azhikkal port. It has also ensured availability of money for
development of Vizhinjam International Cargo Shipment Port, Thiruvananthapuram.
To help village retailers access B2B ecommerce Rajasthan ties up with Applicate IT Solutions:
The Rajasthan government has joined hands with business-to-business (B2B) ecommerce firm Applicate
IT Solutions to enable 35,000 e-mitra kiosks in the state for traders and retailers to procure products
directly from manufacturers.
The e-mitra kiosks launched in 2011 by the state government allows villagers to access government services
such as licenses and passport services.
India, Tanzania signed five agreements:
India and Tanzania inked five agreements to enhance the bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Meghalaya Governor launched the PradhanMantriSurakshitMatritvaAbhiyan (PMSMA):
Meghalaya Governor V.Shanmuganathan inaugurated the launch of
PradhanMantriSurakshitMatritvaAbhiyan (PMSMA) in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya at a
programme organized by the office of the District Medical & Health Officer, East Khasi Hills District, under the
aegis of the National Health Mission.
The inaugural programme was followed by a daylong Free Medical Camp for Pre-Natal and Post-Natal care
which was availed by hundreds of women and children.
Auto Ingress sets up first assembly unit in Tamil Nadu:
Auto Ingress, Manufacturing Company of automatic sensor doors has set up its first assembly unit at
Chennai (Maraimalai Nagar) with an investment of about Rs 12 crore.
The unit, set up at SIPCOT Industrial Park, is spread across 20,000 square feet and will produce
automatic sensor doors priced between Rs 50,000 and Rs 3 lakh per unit.
JKs first Seed Processing Unit to come up in Kathua:
In order to produce and procure high quality seeds for cultivation and generate employment in the state,
A seed processing unit will be set up in Jammu & Kashmir to help farmers.
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh to set up the first-ever modern and exclusive seed
processing unit in Jammu and Kashmir will be set up at Kathua.
Government to set up panel to tackle shortage of pulses:
Government has decided to set up a panel to chalk out a long-term strategy to tackle the shortage of
pulses in the country.
The committee, to be headed by Chief Economic Advisor, will consider reasonable hike in minimum support
price of pulses and also bonus for the farmers. It will submit its report within two weeks.
UP creates world record by planting over 5crore trees:
UP has created a world record for orchestrating the largest state-wide plantation drive in 24 hours.
From 10 am on July 11 morning, the forest department in UP started a mission to plant 5 crore saplings. By 9
pm, the state claimed it had achieved the target and planted 5.01 crore saplings across the state.
Alappuzha, Panaji and Mysuru cleanest cities in India: CSE survey
Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji (Capital of Goa) and Mysuru in Karnataka are cleanest cities in India, a
survey based on solid waste management practises in towns across the country today said even as it placed
Delhi at the bottom of the heap.
Indias first smart grid to come up in Gurgaon:
The Union government has set in motion the process of rewarding performing states under UDAY, the
flagship programme in power sector.
It would extend support to the countrys first smart grid project to be set up at Gurgaon in Haryana, which has
been a performing state under the debt restructuring programme for state-owned power distribution
companies.
Spa for transgenders opens in Tamil Nadu:
A spa, likely to be India's first to offer its services to the transgender community, was launched in
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Inaugurated by Formula One Driver NarainKarthikeyan and Tamil actor Sethuraman, the unisex salon also offers
special luxury rooms for transgenders.
Notably, Tamil Nadu was the first Indian state to get a transgender police officer in 2015.
Najma Heptullah and GM Siddeshwara resign; Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi given charge of Minority Affairs Ministry:
Minority Affairs Minister Dr Najma Heptulla and Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public
Enterprises G.M. Siddeshwara have resigned from the Union Council of Ministers.
Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has been given the independent charge of the
Ministry.
Babul Supriyo, Minister of State has been relieved of the charges of Minister of State in the Ministry of Urban
Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation.
Delhi government to set up 300 dengue clinics:
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said as many as 300 clinics will be set up across the capital to
provide treatment for dengue this year.
These clinics will operate like the 'mohalla clinics', and nodal officers will be appointed for their supervision,
officials stated.
Nearly 16,000 dengue cases were reported in the city in 2015.
Railways launch time-tabled Auto Express from Gurgaon to Nidvanda:
Targeting 25 per cent rail share in automobile traffic, railways launched time-tabled Auto Express from
Gurgaon to Nidvanda to ensure faster delivery of cargo.

The Union Government has notified the UIDAI (Terms and Conditions of Service of Chairperson and
Members) Rules, 2016 to give legal status to Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
SC orders restoration of Congress Government in Arunachal Pradesh:
The Supreme Court has ordered the restoration of former Chief Minister Nabam Tukis Congress
government in Arunachal Pradesh.
These petitions were dealing with discretionary powers of Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa to summon or
advance the assembly session.
Indian Navys Marine Commandos base INS Karna commissioned:
Indian Navy has commissioned INS Karna, an independent base of Marine Commandos (MARCOS) at
Bheemunipatanam Naval Base, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
Bangladesh, India sign agreement for joint coal fired power plant:
Bangladesh and India have signed an agreement for the construction of a 1,320 megawatt (MW) coal
fired power plant near Sundarbans.
The agreement was signed between Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Pvt) Limited (BIFPCL), the
joint venture enterprise and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
The prices of goods and services will be on the portal and the departments can decide 'how many units they
want', she added.
'SwachhBalSenas' for garbage-free Puducherry:
To ensure a garbage-free Puducherry, the government will form 'SwachhBalSenas' to make children the
watchdogs of cleanliness and prevent elders from littering.
Children will be given yellow coloured whistles, which they will blow whenever they see elder throwing
garbage, Lt Governor KiranBedi said.
Beat constables in respective areas would help children carry out the work, she added.
Government launches online skill training platform:
The Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry has launched an online portal 'India Skills
Online', and four other initiatives under the 'Skill India' campaign.
The website will provide free courses to aspirants registered for skill training schemes.
It will also offer courses on soft skills, languages, digital literacy, orientation to regional cultures and
entrepreneurship modules.
PemaKhandu sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh:
PemaKhandu (36) of Congress Party was sworn in as the 10th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
With this,he became the youngest Chief Minister in the country. Besides, Chowna Mein was sworn in as the
Deputy Chief Minister.
Supreme Court accepts Lodha panel recommendations on structural reforms in BCCI:
The Supreme Court accepted major recommendations of the Lodha Committee on reforms in BCCI
including a bar on ministers and civil servants and those above 70 years of age from becoming its
members.
The apex court also accepted the recommendations of the Committee headed by retired Chief Justice of India
Justice R M Lodha to have a CAG nominee in BCCI.

launched Transforming India website www.transformingindia.mygov.in.
Transforming India website is a repository for sharing the impact of various governance initiatives with citizens
in real-time.
Free bus pass scheme launched for students in Tamil Nadu:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa launched the free bus pass scheme for school and college
students for 2016-17.
The scheme, aiming to benefit students from poor backgrounds, covered 28.05 lakh students in 2015-16, an
official statement said.
This year, 31.11 lakh students would be provided free smart card bus passes at an estimated Rs.504.31 crore,
the statement added.
Inter-exchange telephone services banned in J&K:
Inter-exchange calls on all telephone connections, except mobile services of BSNL, have been suspended
in the valley due to the prevailing law and order situation.
Customers can not make calls to any phone number outside their respective districts, calls can only be made
within a district.
Broadband internet services have also been banned across the valley.
Indian Medical Council (Amendment) & Dentists (Amendment) Bills introduced in LokSabha:
Health Minister J P Nadda introduced Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill and Dentists
(Amendment) Bill in the LokSabha.
The bills seek to replace National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) ordinances.
Centre sets target of creating food grain storehouse by 2019:
The Centre has set a target of creating food grain storage facilities storehouse with a combined capacity
of hundred lakh tonnes by 2019.
Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, C R Chaudhary said that there is no
dearth of storage capacity for the foodgrains produced in the country.
Parliament passes Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016:
Parliament has passed the Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016 with the RajyaSabha approving it.
The bill seeks to establish a Regional Centre for Biotechnology, an institution of education, training and research,
under the auspices of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the National
Capital Region.
Indias first e-court opened in Hyderabad:
Indias first e-court was opened at High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad.
It is the common high court for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Inaugurating the e-court, Supreme Court Judge Justice Madan B Lokur said Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
were first two states in the country to be chosen for Integrated Criminal Justice System project.
Netherlands-UP signs agreement for setting up skill development centre for farmers:
The Netherlands and Uttar Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a skill
development centre to help farmers.
The MoU would ensure that farmers get information on food processing as well as along with use of modern
techniques to boost production of sugarcane, potato, dairy development and flowers.

The bill prohibits employment of children below 14 years in all occupations or processes except where the child
helps his family, with the provision for imprisonment up to two years for any violation.
TN court orders 30% pay hike for garment workers:
A Tamil Nadu court has ordered a pay hike of up to 30% for garment manufacturing firms' workers in
the state.
This is reportedly the first increment in the minimum wages of the garment workers in over 12 years.
IIT-Indore bans Twitter over fee hike protests:
The IIT-Indore has banned all social media websites including Twitter and Facebook on its campus as its
PhD scholars were using the platforms to protest against the recent fee hike.
The IIT had reportedly increased the fee for PhD scholars by 150% from Rs.8,350 to Rs.19,990 which was
effective even for the scholars currently pursuing their doctorate.

Union Cabinet approves incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company:
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister NarendraModi approved the incorporation of
Sagarmala Development Company (SDC) under the Companies Act, 2013.
SDC will be developed with an initial Authorized Share Capital of 1000 Crore rupees and a Subscribed
Share Capital of 90 Crore rupees.

The Centre has created a new Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology by bifurcating the
erstwhile Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
The newly formed Electronics and IT Ministry will deal with matters related to Aadhaar, promotion of internet,
IT-enabled services, bridging the digital divide, and National Informatics Centre (NIC), among others.

Thermal Power Project (GTPS) of 1980 MW capacity through a Joint Venture Company.
The Joint Venture Company is named as Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL).
CCEA approves construction of new Dry Dock within Cochin Shipyard Limited:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved construction of a new dry dock within
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
The dock at CSL will be developed at an estimated cost of 1799 crore rupees.

The Union Cabinet gave its approval for establishment of new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Rajasthan: Maternal care mobile service launched:
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje launched mMitra, a mobile voice message service that
delivers weekly messages to families about pregnancy, family planning, nutrition, childbirth, and
maternal and child care.
As per reports, the service will initially operate in 195 villages in Khanpur block of Jhalawar district on a pilot
basis, with a scale-up across the district soon.
4,804 children rescued under Operation Muskan:
Mumbai Railway Police has successfully traced as many as 4,804 missing children and reunited 4,386
of them with their family under Operation Muskan.
Rest of the 418 children were handed to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of the state.

This project will help increase the green cover in NDMC areas and curb dust pollution.
India ranks 110 on Sustainable Development index:
India was ranked 110 out of the 149 nations assessed on where they stand with regard to achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals, as per a Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Bertelsmann
Stiftung index.
Countries were ranked on their performance across 17 goals, which are to be achieved by 2030. Sweden topped
the index, followed by Denmark and Norway.
Andhra to distribute 42 lakh more LED bulbs:
Andhra Pradesh will distribute 42 lakh LED bulbs in the state, in addition to the 1.90 lakh bulbs distributed
previously, an official has said.
Further, reports claimed that the state saved a monetary equivalent of Rs.600-700 crore through the bulbs'
distribution.

The Karnataka government has imposed an "unconditional" ban on the sale, and possession of Chinese
'manja' and other non-biodegradable threads used to fly kites.
The threads, coated with finely crushed glass and other harmful substances, are blamed for causing injuries and
claiming lives of birds.
LokSabha passes Bill to establish new NIT in Andhra Pradesh:
The LokSabha passed the National Institute of Technology, Science, Education and Research (Amendment)
(NITSER) Bill, 2016.
The bill seeks to establish a new National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Andhra Pradesh as an institute of
national importance under the NITSER Act, 2007 with an effect from August 2015.

India first to contribute to UN trust fund:
The United Nations Department of Field Support has announced that India has become the first country
to contribute to a trust fund set up in support of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by UN
peacekeepers.
The $100,000 contribution comes after the UN Secretariat requested voluntary contributions to the trust fund
while establishing it in March.

India's first green train corridor opens in Tamil Nadu:
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated Indias first 'green train corridor' a 114-km stretch
between Rameswaram and Manamadurai in Tamil Nadu.
A green corridor or zero toilet discharge section envisages that all trains crossing that route will have bio-toilets,
thereby eliminating open discharge of waste on the tracks.
Railways has provided 40,750 bio-toilets in trains, as of June-end.
Naidu lays foundation stone for MSME technology centre:
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for an MSME technology
centre under a World Bank-funded programme.

Government to invest Rs.200 crore to scale up incubators:
NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said that the government will identify 10 startup incubators out of existing 200
such centres and invest Rs.200 crore to scale up their capacity by 10 times.
Each selected incubator will receive Rs.20 crore. Kant added, "We're going to open 100 new incubation centres
this year. We have received 3,000 applications for it.

set up Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and bring the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad in Jharkhand

Talks on with private players to provide Wi-Fi in whole Delhi
The Delhi government is in talks with private players and assessing various models to bring the entire
national capital under Wi-Fi network in a year or two, an official said today.
Gajendra Haldea, a member of the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC), said the government
should be more of an enabler in rolling out projects such as Wi-Fi.
Union Government issues notification for implementation of 7th Pay Commission
The Union Government has issued notification for the implementation of 7th Pay Commission. It was
issued as per the Cabinet approval in June 2016.
With this issuance, 4.8 million central government employees and 5.2 million pensioners will get the increased
payout from their August 2016 salaries.

FDI in pharma sector at Rs.4,975 crore in 2015-16
The pharmaceuticals sector received FDI of Rs.4,975 crore in 2015-16, down from Rs.9,052 crore in
2014-15, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday.
Indias FDI policy provides for 100% FDI under automatic route in greenfield pharma (involves start of new
venture with construction of new facilities) and upto 100% under government route in brownfield pharma
(involves purchase of existing facilities).

Parliament Passes Child Labour Amendment Bill, UNICEF Voices Concern
Parliament has passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016. The bill
was first passed in Rajya Sabha and later in Lok Sabha during Monsoon session of Parliament.
It seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 to widen the scope of the law against
child labour and stricter punishments for violations.
Defence Ministry unveils statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram
Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar unveiled a life-size statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam
at Peikarumbu, his burial site in Rameswaram Island.
Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, last year while delivering a lecture at the IIM-Shillong in Meghalaya. He
suffered a massive cardiac arrest. IIM-Shillong will organise a lecture series on making the world a better planet.

Centre Approves Rs. 1601 Crore for Skill Development Programme in Jammu & Kashmir
Centre has approved Rs. 1601 crore for Jammu and Kashmir under skill development initiative Himayat to
train 1.24 lakh local youths in vocational courses, Rural Development Minister Abdul Haq Khan said.
He said the proposals for implementing the program have already been invited online by DDU-GYK National
Mission Management Unit, Union Ministry of Rural Development.
Mumbai to Delhi in less than 13 hours on Talgo trains
A Mumbai to Delhi train journey within 13 hours could come true in the first week of August.
As part of the final phase of trials, the nine-coach Talgo - the Spanish-manufactured high speed train will
undertake three trips between Mumbai and Delhi between August 1 and 5.
The Western Railway (WR) sources said that the train will depart from New Delhi at 7.55 pm on August 1, and
will maintain a speed of 130 kmph during the entire journey.
Cabinet okays India-Cambodia investment treaty
The Cabinet approved the signing of the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) with Cambodia, the first
agreement to be inked on the basis of the model BIT text approved in December 2015.
The treaty seeks to promote and protect investments from either country in the other's territory with the
objective of increasing bilateral investment flows, an official statement said.
Union Cabinet approves key changes to GST Bill, drops 1% additional tax
The Cabinet cleared changes in the GST Constitutional Amendment Bill, dropping 1 per cent
manufacturing tax and providing guarantee to compensate states for any revenue loss in the first five years of
rollout of the proposed indirect tax regime.
The Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister NarendraModi, decided to include in the Constitutional Amendment Bill
that any dispute between states and the Centre will be adjudicated by the GST Council, which will have
representation from both the Centre and states.
Rs. 2333 Crore sanctioned for projects under SwadeshDarshan and PRASAD in last 18 months
The Ministry of Tourism, in last 18 months, has sanctioned projects worth Rs. 2333 Crore under
SwadeshDarshan and PRASAD, the flagship schemes of the Ministry of Tourism.
11 projects in Amravati, Kamakhya Temple, Patna Sahib, Patna, Vishnupad Gaya, ShriJaggannathPuri, Amritsar,
Ajmer-Pushkar, Varanasi, Mathura-Vrindavan and KedarnathDhamUttarakhand for Rs.284.53 have been
sanctioned so far under the PRASAD scheme.

LokSabha nod for Lokpal Act amendment
The LokSabha approved an amendment to the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013, to allow extension of the
time given to public servants and trustees and board members of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO)
receiving government funds of more than Rs. 1 crore or foreign funding of more than Rs 10 lakh to declare their
assets and those of their spouses.
IRCTC to launch travel insurance facility at Re 1
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has set to launch the facility of travel
insurance for passengers who book tickets on its website.
The scheme offers passengers or their families compensation of up to Rs 10 lakh in the event of death or
permanent total disability, Rs 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, up to Rs 2 lakh for hospitalisation
expenses.
The scheme is being implemented by the IRCTC in partnership with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Royal
Sundaram and Shriram General.
India signs $1bn deal for submarine hunter planes
India signed a deal worth about $1 billion with US-based aerospace company Boeing for four P-8I
submarine hunter planes, reports said.
This comes after Boeing delivered the last of eight such planes last year in a $2.1 billion deal.
The eight submarine hunters have already been deployed and are tracking submarine movements in the Indian
Ocean.
Centre approves 716.59 cr disaster relief to UP, Rajasthan and Manipur
A high-level committee chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh approved a total of Rs 716.59
crore's worth of central assistance to UP, Rajasthan and Manipur.
The committee approved financial aid worth Rs 622.76 crore for UP, Rs 79.18 crore for Rajasthan and Rs 14.65
crore for Manipur.
IT skills imparted to over 7 lakh school teachers in India: Microsoft
Microsoft has so far equipped more than 7.7 lakh government school teachers with IT skills across 12
states in India under its Project Shikshaprogramme launched in 2003, the tech giant said on Friday.
Aimed at developing skills among youth from under-privileged communities to drive employability and
entrepreneurship, Project Jyoti helped establish over 1700 enterprises run by youth in the country.
First woman head of aviation regulator moves out
The first woman chief of aviation regulator DGCA M Sathiyavathy was today named as new Union Labour
Secretary.
Sathiyavathi, a 1982-batch IAS officer of the union territories cadre, was in September last year appointed as the
Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved her appointment as Officer on Special Duty in the
Ministry of Labour and Employment with immediate effect, an order issued by Department of Personnel and
Training (DoPT) said.

The Centre today announced the formation of District Development Coordination and Monitoring
Committee (DDCMC) to be named Disha for effective development coordination of almost all the
programmes of Central Government, whether it is for infrastructure development or Social and human
resource development.
Strategic Forces Command exempted from RTI ambit
The Strategic Forces Command, which forms part of the National Command Authority (NCA), has been
added to the Second Schedule of the Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005, which exempts security and
intelligence establishments from its purview.
A government notification said the Strategy Forces Command was being brought under sub-section (2) of
Section 24 of the RTI. The NCAs Executive Council, chaired by the National Security Adviser, gives inputs to the
Political Council, which authorises a nuclear attack if need be.

Centre sanctions nearly Rs 620 crore to UP as drought assistance
Nearly Rs. 620 croreshave been sanctioned to Uttar Pradesh by the Centre as assistance for the recent drought
situation in the state.
The Central Government also approved almost Rs. 80 crores for Rajasthan which was affected by hailstorm and
Rs. 15 crores to Manipur which was affected by earthquake.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting in the national capital chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath
Singh.

The establishment of the first hydro engineering college in Himachal Pradesh will boost regional
development and provide more job opportunities, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said.

Madhubabu Pension Scheme to cover 3 lakh more people
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed the district collectors to extend Madhubabu Pension Scheme to
three lakh more beneficiaries from August 15.
While 47 lakh people have already been covered under the Madhubabu Pension Scheme, the number of
beneficiaries will increase to 50 lakh from August 15.
Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister meets District Nodal Officers of Eastern and North Eastern States; 23 lakhs
connections issued so far under PMUY
Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Petroleum & Natural Gas ShriDharmendraPradhan has held meeting
with all District Nodal Officers (DNOs) of Eastern States and North Eastern States.
Nearly 250 DNOs, Senior Officials of the Ministry and Oil Marketing Companies attended the meeting.
The DNO meet was first such meeting providing an opportunity for experience sharing by DNOs in implementing

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on the extension of embargo on food imports from
the EU and some other countries until December 31, 2017, according to a document posted on the
governments legal information portal on June 30.

India & Cyprus iron out DTAA issues
The government announced that it had reached an in-principle agreement with the government of
Cyprus to resolve all pending issues in order to negotiate a new Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement

Exercise RIPMAC 2016 begins:
Exercise RIMPAC 2016, the Pacific military exercise, began at Hawaii with 26 nations participating in
the war games that will cover the Hawaiian Island and southern California.
The theme of RIMPAC 2016 is Capable, Adaptive, Partners. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the
series that began in 1971.
Abu Dhabi merger to create $175 billion bank:
National Bank of Abu Dhabi and counterpart First Gulf Bank, on Sunday, received board approval for
a merger to create a bank with $175 billion in assets.
The merger, to be completed in 2017, will create one of the largest banks in Middle East and Africa. The tie-
up comes amid attempts to diversify the economy hit by falling oil prices.
France offers 1 billion to revive Indias combat jet engine project:
France has offered to invest EUR 1 billion to revive Indias combat jet engine project, proposing a
joint development plan that could see the stalled Kaveri gas turbine powering indigenous Tejas
fighters by 2020.
Nikola Teslas statue provides free Wi-Fi:
The statue, unveiled in 2013, was a crowd-funded project, initiated by a company called Northern
Imagination.
Also known as Master of Lightning, Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, best known for his

China inducts its largest homegrown military transport plane:
China inducted its largest indigenously-built transport aircraft Y-20.
Y-20 which officially joined the PLA Air Force in Chengdu, is ideal for transporting cargo and personnel over
long distances in diverse weather conditions and has a maximum take off weight of 200 tonnes.
The plane is comparable to the Russian-made IL-76 and the US C-17. PLA officials earlier said Y-20 is more
advanced than the IL-476.
Liberty Park opens at World Trade Center in NY:
The Liberty Park opened at the World Trade Center in New York on June 29. The one-acre elevated
park, which overlooks the World Trade Center site, will be open to the public between 6 am and 11
pm on all days.
Notably, the Saint Nicholas Church, which was destroyed during the 9/11 attacks, is presently being rebuilt
in the park.
UK poised to have first woman PM since Margaret Thatcher:
Britain is all set to have a woman Prime Minister after more than 25 years since Margaret Thatcher
as the race to succeed David Cameron narrowed down to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom.
May and Leadsom will now begin their campaigns to convince 150,000 Conservative party membership
around the country for a final round of voting with the winner set to be declared on September 9.
The outcome means Britain is set to have its second female prime minister. Margaret Thatcher was the first,
holding office from 1979 to 1990.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the anti-terrorist legislation adopted by the lower and
upper houses of parliament in June 2016.

Sweden pays students to attend secondary school:
The Swedish government pays a grant of about $120 to every student in the age group 16-20 years to
attend secondary school classes.
While these grants are automatically available to Swedish students, foreign students need to apply for the
same. Students can also avail a need based supplementary boarding grant in the range of $140 to $230.

personal items from the era to the War Childhood Museum, a touring exhibition aimed at warning

6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Ecuador's northwest coast:
A shallow earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Ecuador's northwest coast.
US Geological Survey (USGS) said quake was centred near the town of Esmeraldas, northwest of the
capital, Quito, at a depth of about 35 km.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning immediately after the quake.
Australias PM declares victory in election:
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull declared victory in the national election.
His coalition government will retain power while the opposition Labor Party conceded defeat.
Reportedly, Turnbull's coalition is expected to win two of the five seats in doubt, enabling it to form a
majority government, after having won 74 of the 150 seats in the lower house.
Harry Potter exhibition being held in Belgium:
A Harry Potter exhibition is being held in Brussels, Belgium from June-end to September.
The exhibition offers fans a chance to tour the wizarding world, including the Forbidden Forest, and get
sorted into Hogwarts houses.
The exhibition's press officer has said the event was successful even before it began, as one lakh tickets were
sold online previously.
Worlds tallest water coaster comes up in US:
The 'MASSIV Monster Blaster' is the tallest water coaster in the world at 81 feet and 6.72 inches, as
per the Guinness World Records.
Located in the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Water Park in Texas (US), the climb to the top takes 123 steps,
and the ride is 2.5 football fields long.
Tokyo houses world's first Snoopy Museum:
Japan's Tokyo has a Snoopy Museum dedicated to the artwork of Charles M Schulz, the creator of
the Peanuts comic strip.
It showcases large-scale works featuring popular characters like Snoopy and Woodstock, hosts new
exhibitions every six months, and houses Peanuts memorabilia for sale.
The satellite museum will shut down in September 2018.
US announces to provide funding for Afghan Forces by 2020:
US Defence Secretary has announced to provide funding for the Afghan National Defence and
Security Forces by 2020.
At a joint press conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul, Mr Carter said, US and its allies
intend to remain fully committed to the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.
President Ghani said, an environment of trust had been created between Kabul and Washington and that
they are on the same page in the fight terrorism.
7,500 musicians set record for largest orchestra:
Over 7,500 classical musicians performed together at the Commerzbank football stadium in
Frankfurt, breaking the world record for the largest orchestra, according to the German Institute for
Records.
Conductor Wolf Kerschek led the 45-minute long musical performance of Beethovens 'Ode to Joy'. The
previous record was set in Australia in 2013 when over 7,200 musicians played together.
Peru declares Zika emergency across northern half of the country:
Peru has declared Zika a health emergency across the northern half of the country after confirming
that 102 people have been infected with the virus.
The 90-day emergency was announced, which said the Health Ministry and local authorities were working
to prevent the spread of the disease.
The disesase is principally transmitted by mosquitos. The cases detected so far include 34 pregnant women.
China has no historic rights over South China Sea: Hague Tribunal
The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in Hague, the Netherlands has rejected Chinas claims to
economic rights across large swathes of South China Sea.
Ruling in this regard was given by a five-member tribunal appointed by the Permanent Court of Arbitration
in Hague in a case brought by the Philippines.
The ruling came from an arbitration tribunal under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
(UNCLOS) which both China and Philippines have signed. The ruling is binding but the tribunal has no
powers for enforcement.
11th ASEM summit begins in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia:
The eleventh edition of Asia-Europe Meeting Summit (ASEM11) or ASEM2016 began in Ulaanbaatar,
the capital of Mongolia.
The theme of the Summit is Partnership for the Future through Connectivity. World leaders including from
the leaders of 51 member countries and the representatives of European Union and Asian are attending the
two day summit.
Indian delegation is led by Vice President Mohmmad Hamid Ansari.
Indias agenda for the summit is to push the efforts to boost inter-continental connectivity.
Mud City in Mali added to UNESCO endangered list:
UNESCO's World Heritage Committee added the Old Towns of Djenn in the African nation of Mali to
the 'List of World Heritage in Danger'.
The committee said instability due to activities of Islamist militant groups has made implementation of
protective measures difficult.
The 'Mud City' has nearly 2,000 pre-Islamic era houses that have been inhabited since 250 BC.
US to offer Russia military coordination on Syria:
According to reports, the United States will propose increasing military cooperation and intelligence
sharing with Russia to identify and target Islamic State and al Qaeda headquarters, training camps,
and supply routes in Syria.
Strikes against the identified targets could be carried out by US or Russian jets.
Secretary of State John Kerry will present the proposal in Moscow.
US 1st to open high-band spectrum for 5G network:
US regulators voted to open nearly 11 gigahertz of high-frequency spectrum to help carriers create
5G wireless applications and networks, making US the first country to do so.
5G networks are expected to be at least 10 times faster than 4G networks. South Korea and Japan plan to
deploy 5G by 2018 and 2020 respectively.
Bullet trains cross at record speed of 420 kmph:
Two bullet trains in China crossed each other while running on parallel tracks in opposite directions
at record speeds of 420 kmph.
The two trains - 'Golden Phoenix' and 'Dolphin Blue', were separated by only 1.6 meters when they met,
setting a world-first for trains crossing at such speeds, as per China Railway Corporation.
Adults-only ice cream van launched in UK:
Warner Leisure Hotels has launched an adults-only 'Grown Up Ice Cream' van in the UK, which serves
a mix of ice creams and alcohol, with flavours like 'Tequila Sorbet' and 'Bacon and Bourbon'.
The van has a bouncer to keep underage people away.
The hotel group, which plans adult-only holidays, announces the van's stop on its Facebook page every
morning
UK PM Theresa May rebuilds cabinet for EU exit:
UK PM Theresa May has made key changes in the cabinet, putting Brexit supporters in charge of
negotiating the country's exit from the European Union.
This includes the appointment of former PM candidate Andrea Leadsom as Environment Secretary and
former London Mayor Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.
May also sought time from the European Commission to finalise UK's negotiation strategy.
S Korea sets up task force for menu translations:
According to reports, the South Korean government has set up a task force to remove 'incorrect'
translations of Korean dishes from menus.
The task force will work on standardised descriptions of Korean cuisine in English, Japanese and Chinese.
Korean dishes are sometimes misrepresented - 'steak tartare' was reportedly referred to as 'six times' in a
Korean menu.
UNESCO adds 9 sites to 'World Heritage List':
UNESCO declared the Archaeological Site of Philippi in Greece and the Antequera Dolmens Site in
Spain to be 'World Heritage Sites'.
It added nine sites to its 'World Heritage List', including the Archaeological Site of Ani in Turkey, the Persian
Qanat in Iran and Nan Madol in Micronesia. Notably, Bihar's Nalanda University was also added to the list.
UNESCO names 'World Heritage Sites in Danger':
UNESCO declared five 'World Heritage Sites' in Libya to be in danger, citing damage caused by the
conflict in the country as well as the threat of further damages.
The Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz in Uzbekistan, the Old Towns of Djenn in Mali and Nan Madol in
Micronesia were also declared 'World Heritage Sites in Danger'
China to conduct 3-day military drill in South China Sea:
China will conduct a 3-day military drill in South China Sea from tomorrow, state-run media quoting
the Maritime Safety Agency.
The Agency warned that entry to the exercise area will be prohibited during the exercise.
Tensions remain high in the region after the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China
has no legal basis to claim historic rights to islands in the South China Sea.
Digital art exhibition opens in Tokyo:
Art collective teamLab opened a digital art exhibition in Tokyo, Japan, which allows visitors to
engage with interactive artworks
The 3,000-square-metre exhibition features a kaleidoscopic digital maze where visitors can control the
intensity and hue of the lights.
It also features a 'flower universe' installation into which visitors can release butterflies using their
smartphones.
North Korea fires three ballistic missiles into Sea of Japan:
North Korea has fired three ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan. US and South Korean military
officials said the missiles were launched from the western city of Hwangju.
The US said the first two were short-range Scud missiles while the third was presumed to be a mid-range
Rodong.
It comes after the US and South Korea said they would deploy an anti-missile system to counter the North's
threats.
India, Malaysia to cooperate on combating ISIS:
India and Malaysia have agreed to "proactively" engage in combating the "menace" of ISIS activities,
a statement read.
At a delegation level meeting between the two countries, Home Minister Rajnath Singh stressed on strong
intelligence sharing to stop the propagation of ISIS ideology.
The two sides also discussed issues like Extradition Treaty and the circulation of fake Indian currency notes.
Morocco seeks to rejoin the African Union:
Moroccan King Mohammed VI has formally announced that his country wanted to rejoin the African
Union, 32 years after it quit the bloc.
Morocco had left the AU protesting its recognition of the independence of Western Sahara, an area which
Moroccans describe as their country's "southern provinces".
Notably, Morocco is the only African country which is not an AU member.
Republicans nominate Donald Trump for President:
The Republican National Convention formally declared that Donald Trump is the party's nominee for
the US Presidential elections.
Trump secured the nomination after beating 16 other candidates, and winning the Republican vote in 38 of
the 50 states.
He is expected to face the presumptive Democratic party nominee Hillary Clinton in the elections
scheduled for November this year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Brazil free of measles. The step was taken after no
case of the disease was registered in 2015 on 26 July 2016.
From 1985 to 2000, Brazil saw no domestic cases of measles, although it broke out in 2013 in the northeastern
states of Pernambuco and Ceara.
Indo-Bangla meet: Delhi, Dhaka talk anti-terror cooperation, border management
Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan Thursday agreed to
enhance bilateral cooperation on anti-terror efforts.
Both leaders concurred on the need to immediately operationalise the Agreement on Combating Terrorism and
Organised Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking between the two countries.
India to host international summit on tobacco-control
India will host a crucial global summit in Nov to eliminate the illicit trade of tobacco products.The
summit is scheduled from Nov 7-12 in Noida will aim to eliminate illicit trade of tobacco products.
About 1,000-1,500 delegates from 180 countries are expected to participate in the summit.The percentage of
tobacco-related cancers is 30.1 of the population as a whole.
Joint Indo-Thailand Military Exercise Maitree culminates
The Indo-Thailand Military Exercise Maitree concluded on 29 July 2016 at Krabi, Thailand.
The exercise had commenced on 15 July 2016 under the aegis of the Royal Thailand Army.
The aim of the joint exercise was to train contingents of both the armies on conduct of counter terrorist
operations in an urban environment.

NO PRE-2005 NOTE EXCHANGE AT BANKS FROM JULY 1
The Reserve Bank of India said pre-2005 banknotes can now be exchanged only at select RBI offices (and
not banks) from July 1, as most of these notes have been withdrawn from circulation.
WORLD BANK COMMITS $1BN FOR INDIA SOLAR PROJECTS
The World Bank on Thursday said it will lend over $1 billion to India for its solar energy projects.
This is the global lender's biggest solar aid to any country. Notably, India plans to increase its solar potential 30
times to 100 gigawatts by 2020.
SBI launches social media banking platform
India's largest lender State Bank of India launched a social media banking platform 'SBI Mingle',
enabling customers to access a host of banking services through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
RIL, SBI sign pact to set up payments bank JV
Energy-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries and India's largest lender SBI have signed
shareholders agreements to set up small deposit-taking institutions, called payments bank.
Two of these -- Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co and grouping of Sun Pharma promoter DilipShangvi,
IDFC Bank and telecom operator Telenor decided to shelve plans of launching payments bank.
SBI secures over Rs 4,000 crore from World Bank for solar programme
State Bank of India has inked agreements with the World Bank for a $625 million (around Rs 4,200
crore) facility to support grid-connected rooftop solar programme in the country.
This will help SBI in financing grid connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (GRPV) projects at very competitive
rates, the country's largest lender said in a statement.
Through this initiative, at least 400 MW solar capacity will be created across the country.

The private sector lender has launched an SME Bank which will provide full-fledged digital banking
service to small and medium sector enterprises.
There are over 3.6 crore SMEs in the country which contribute over 8% to Indias GDP.
ICICI arm tops IPO rankings:
ICICI Securities has topped the initial public offering (IPO) league table in the first half of 2016.
According to data provided by Bloomberg, ICICI Securities has managed five IPOs to help rise around Rs
1,216 crore for companies getting listed.
Kotak Investment Banking, which was in pole position last year, is currently second, with four deals
worth Rs 1,036 crore.
SIDBI partners with Yes Bank for loan guarantee under World Bank scheme:
SIDBI(Small Industries Development Bank of India) entered into a partnership with YES Bank to
guarantee 75% of loans of up to Rs 15 crore extended to energy efficiency projects under the WORLD
BANK initiative.
The (SIDBI) is the project execution agency whereas Yes Bank claims to be the first Indian lender to
be em-panelled for the programme.
HDFC to become first issuer of 'masala bonds':
Mortgage lender HDFC said that it plans to raise up to Rs.3,000 crore through synthetic INR notes
called 'masala bonds', a first for an Indian company.
HDFC added that it has appointed Axis Bank, Credit Suisse, and Nomura as joint bookrunners and lead
managers to the issue.
'Masala bonds' are rupee-denominated borrowings by Indian entities in overseas markets
Paperless SIP introduced by BSE for mutual fund investors:
Paperless SIP (systematic investment plans) which allows mutual fund investors to make
transactions through various modes of payments has been unveiled by the leading Bombay Stock
Exchange (BSE).
Capital market regulator SEBI had allowed mutual fund distributors to use the stock exchange
platform for non-demat transactions as well for sale or redemption of these financial products since
2014.
IDFC Bank announces acquisition of GramaVidiyal Microfinance:
IDFC Bank announced the acquisition of GramaVidiyal Microfinance, a Trichy-based Microfinance
company.
A person familiar with the transaction said the deal is estimated at nearly Rs 300 crore, adding that it will
lead to a 20-fold surge in IDFC Banks customer base to more than a million.
IDFC Bank said it is the first time an Indian bank has acquired a microfinance institution.
IndusInd Bank opens international banking unit at GIFT City:
IndusInd Bank has opened international banking unit (IBU) at the International Financial Services
Centre (IFSC) in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to meet the requirements of
offshore banking operations from India.
SBI inks MoU with IIT Bombay to promote startups in financial sector:
The State Bank of India (SBI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Society for
Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT Bombay to promote innovation by start-ups in the
financial sector.
The SINE is IIT Bombays technology business incubator to promote innovation by startups in the financial
sector.
SEBI notifies tighter transfer norms for P-Notes:
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has issued new norms restricting the transfer of
Participatory Notes (P-Notes).
Under this, these offshore instruments can be transferred only to Sebi-authorised entities, provided a prior
consent of the issuing foreign investor is obtained.
RBI sets up SudarshanSen-headed Inter-regulatory Working Group on Fin Tech and Digital Banking:
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted an inter regulatory Working Group (WG) to study the
entire gamut of regulatory issues relating to Fin Tech (financial technology) and Digital Banking in
India.
It will view the growing significance of Fin Tech innovations and their interactions with the financial sector
as well as the financial sector entities.
Bank of England leaves interest rates unchanged:
The Bank of England has kept its interest rate unchanged at 0.5%, a record low maintained since
March 2009, amid market expectations of a rate cut.
The central bank is due to publish its quarterly Inflation Report on August 4, which will include fresh
forecasts for growth and inflation and its first full take on the UK referendum's economic implications.
ICICI Pru Life files for India's 1st insurance IPO:
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has filed for an initial public offering of shares, a draft prospectus
released, which will be India's first insurance sector IPO.
It could reportedly raise around Rs.5,000 crore, the biggest local IPO in six years. India's ICICI Bank, holding
nearly 68% of the insurer, will sell up to181.34 million shares.
SBI, Brookfield to set up JV for stressed assets:
State Bank of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Canada-based Brookfield Asset
Management Inc to form a joint venture which will independently evaluate and invest in various stressed
assets in the country.
Brookfield will commit about Rs.7,000 crore to the venture, while SBI will contribute up to 5% of its total
investments.
New Development Bank launched by BRICS, announces loans worth 900 million dollars:
The New Development Bank launched by 5 emerging economies, known as BRICS, has announced its
first round of loans worth about 900 million dollars.
The Bank held its first general meeting in Shanghai yesterday. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa
established the institution last year.
Federal Bank ties up with Reliance Jio Money:
Through this service, the leading private sector bank's customers can complete a transaction without

SBI Launches Debit Card-less Instant Money Transfer Facility
State Bank of India launched a payment system at its ATMs which will allow the account holders transfer
money using mobile phone number as identifier, reported PTI.
The facility will enable a payment of up to Rs 10,000 from any SBI bank account and the recipient of this
payment can withdraw funds instantly from an IMT-enabled ATM without using a debit card, the top lender said
in a statement.

compensation to the state pending since 2012-13.

State Bank of India and tech giant Oracle have come together for corporate India's largest volunteering

LIC signs up Axis Bank as bancassurance partner
India's largest insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has signed an agreement with private
sector lender Axis Bank as its bancassurance partner wherein the bank will distribute LIC's products to
its customers.
In the preliminary phase, the bank will distribute LICs life insurance products across its branches in West
Bengal, Bangalore and Haryana Panchkula. Additionally, the bank will also provide post sales services such as
premium collection and renewal of policies.
Bank of India to allot preference shares to govt for Rs 1,338 crores
Bank of India (BoI) will issue shares on a preferential basis to the government for capital infusion of Rs 1,338
crore.
The government announced capital infusion of Rs 22,915 crore in 13 public sector banks for the current
financial year and BoI is to get Rs 1,784 crore.
Fifteen banks ready to roll out UPI by July 31
At least 15 banks, both from public and private sectors, are ready to roll out the unified payments
interface (UPI) starting July 31.
The UPI system is a kind of e-payment which can be authenticated using mobile phones.
Existing bank apps can be UPI-enabled or have UPI apps. Customers can have a single virtual identity for a bank
account through which they can make and receive payments digitally.
The Reserve Bank of India had formally launched the system in April this year.
The law encourages shops, malls and cinema halls, among other establishments to run 24x7 throughout the
year.
P-Note investments rise to Rs. 2.15 lakh crore in May
Investments into Indias capital markets through participatory notes (P-Notes) rose to Rs. 2.15 lakh
crore at the end of May, after hitting a 20-month low in the preceding month.
According to SEBI data, the total value of P-Notes investment in Indian markets equity, debt and derivatives
increased to Rs.2.15 lakh crore at the end of May from Rs. 2.12 lakh crore in March-end.

Alibaba launches system to remove fake products
Chinese online commerce giant Alibaba launched 'IP Joint-Force System', an online system to track and
remove fake products from its shopping platform.
This comes after Alibaba Founder and CEO Jack Ma stated last month that counterfeit goods have no place on its
platform.
Notably, Alibaba was removed from the Washington-based International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition earlier
this year.
India's rank falls to 75 on money in Swiss banks:
According to Switzerland central bank's latest update, India's ranking fell from 61 to 75 this year in
terms of citizens holding money with Swiss banks.
The UK was on top with 25% of the total foreign money in Swiss banks, followed by the US with a 14% stake.
Notably, India's current 0.1% share is lowest for the country since 1996.

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) acquired global clothing brand Forever 21 in the Indian
market for 26 million US dollars.
Forever 21 has a network of more than 700 stores worldwide. Its India operations reported a turnover of
262 crore rupees in 2015-16.
TRAI launches app to track mobile data speed:
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched an app called 'MySpeed' that measures
mobile's data speed of the users and sends results to the regulatory body.
Available on Android and iOS platforms, it also sends device's location and other network information to
TRAI. It does not share any personal information of its users and sends reports anonymously.
India ranks 91 in Networked Readiness Index 2016:
India was placed at 91st position in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) 2016 that was released by
the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF).
Singapore leads the Index followed by Finland, Sweden, Norway and the United States.
Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Israel, Singapore, the Netherlands and the US are leading the world when it
comes to generating economic impact from investments in information and technology.
India (91st) was ranked the lowest among the BRICS countries- Russia (41st), China (59th), South Africa

Royal Enfield to hold 1st women Himalayan Odyssey:
The annual Royal Enfield Himalayan Odyssey has introduced an all-women edition this year,
wherein 20 women will begin a 17-day-long motorcycling journey from New Delhi on July 9.

IMF cuts Eurozone growth forecast post 'Brexit':
The International Monetary Fund has downgraded its growth forecast for the Eurozone stating that
"negative impact of the UK referendum will dent the region's economic recovery over the next two
years.
According to IMF, GDP in the Eurozone is expected to grow 1.6% in 2016 and 1.4% in 2017, as against the
earlier estimate of 1.7% for both the years.
Airtel-Aircel 4G spectrum deal cleared:
The Telecom Ministry has reportedly cleared the Rs.3,500-crore 4G spectrum trading deal between
BhartiAirtel and Aircel.
As part of the deal, Airtel acquired rights from Aircel in eight telecom circles including Bihar and
Assam.
Airtel had surrendered 1.2 Mhz spectrum in Odisha before the clearance, as it exceeded the spectrum
ownership cap, the report added.
eBay acquires predictive analytics startup:
E-commerce giant eBay announced the acquisition of Israel-based predictive analytics
startupSalesPredict that leverages advanced analytics to predict customer buying behaviour and
sales conversion.
Although the terms of the deal were not revealed, eBay stated that the move is an effort to make itself better
understand how to reach those looking to buy from its online marketplaceIn its third technology focused

As a part of the deal, Cubeit's team has been inducted into Myntra's technology team.

Online travel company Ibibo Group acquired a majority stake in Peru-based bus ticketing platform
Busportal for an undisclosed amount.
The investment in Busportal will give Ibibo Groups bus ticketing platform redBus an entry into Latin
American markets including Peru, Colombia and Chile.
In June 2013, Ibibo acquired a controlling stake in redBus, valuing it at around $140 million.

ADB cuts developing Asia's 2016 growth forecast:
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) trimmed its 2016 growth forecasts for developing economies in

This follows a slowing US economy and the near-term impact of the 'Brexit' vote, analysts said
India's economy is still forecast to grow 7.4% this year and 7.8% in 2017, the ADB added.

Japan's Softbank agreed to acquire ARM Holdings, the U.K. based semiconductor firm, in a deal worth
more than 32 billion US dollar.

IMF cuts India's growth forecast by 0.1%:
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) trimmed India's growth forecast by 0.1% to 7.4% for both
2016-17 and 2017-18, reflecting "sluggish investment recovery" in the economy. This figure is lower
than the 7.6% growth registered in 2015-16.
Further, the IMF cut global economic growth by 0.1% for 2016 to 3.1%, owing to uncertainty arising from
'Brexit'.
Myntra to acquire Hrithik's clothing brand HRX:
Online fashion retailer Myntra is buying a majority stake in actor HritikRoshan's clothing and shoes
brand HRX.
HRX is also planning to launch offline stores in India, followed by other countries in West Asia.
The company however did not disclose any financial details about the partnership. The romantic leisure travel

ADB raises Rs.500 crore in rupee-linked bonds
Multilateral funding agency Asian Development Bank today stated that it has raised around Rs.500 crore
by issuing five-year offshore Indian rupee-linked bonds.
The transaction, with the longest maturity and the largest size of any ADB rupee bond, demonstrates "investor
interest" in India, an official said.
The proceeds from the bonds are meant to support private sector lending in India.
RBI slaps Rs 27-crore penalty on 13 banks for FEMA violations
In a major crackdown for FEMA violations and KYC lapses, the RBI has imposed Rs 27-crore penalty on 13
public and private sector banks, including PNB and HDFC Bank, while asking eight others, including SBI and
ICICI Bank, to ensure strict compliance with guidelines.
On the basis of inputs received from a public sector bank, the Reserve Bank had undertaken a scrutiny on
advance import remittances in 21 banks in October and November 2015.

BPCL buys 21% stake in PE-backed FINO PayTech for $37.6 mn
State-run refiner Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL) said on Friday it has signed definitive agreements to
acquire a 21% stake in payment technology solutions provider FINO PayTech Ltd for Rs 251 crore ($37.6
million) in cash.
Mumbai-based FINO was one of 11 companies to receive the Reserve Bank of Indias in-principle approval to
start a payments bank last year.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams won their six Wimbledon doubles title after defeating

The American pair is now 14-0 in Grand Slam finals. This is the fourth time Serena has won both singles and
doubles titles in a single year, while Venus has done it twice herself.
Lewis Hamilton wins 2016 British Grand Prix:
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed the 2016 British Grand Prix title of Formula One at the
Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, United Kingdom.
It is Hamiltons overall fourth British Grand Prix title after winning it in 2008, 2014 and 2015. He also
became the first driver to win the British Grand Prix three times in a row.
Red Bull-TAG Heuers Max Verstappen occupied the second place in the race. NicoRosberg from Germany
stood third in the race.

Portugal lifted the Euro 2016 football championship. In the final clash played at Saint-Denis in Paris,
Portugal defeated France 1-0.
Substitute Eder scored in extra-time to give Portugal a win at their first major international title despite
losing captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to injury.
Eder scored the goal with 11 minutes of extra time left to stun France after the host team had dominated the

British Paralympian Gordon Reid won the first-ever Wimbledon wheelchair mens singles title, after
defeating Sweden's Paralympic champion Stefan Olsson 6-1, 6-4.
Reid also won the wheelchair mens doubles title, alongside compatriot Alfie Hewett.
Wheelchair tennis has featured in Wimbledon since 2001, but 2016 is the first edition to feature mens and
womens singles.

Jerome Taylor, the West Indies fast bowler, has retired from Test cricket and has informed the
selectors of his decision, the West Indies Cricket Board said.

San Antonio Spurs power forward Tim Duncan has announced his retirement from the NBA after a
19-year long career in the basketball league.
The 40-year-old, who was picked by the franchise as the first overall pick of the draft in 1997, won five NBA

Indias Junior mens hockey team wins EurAsia Cup:
The Indian mens junior hockey team beat Russian club Dynamo Stroitel 3-2 in Yekaterinburg,

Indian para-swimmer Vishwas KS won three medals at the 2016 Speedo Can Am Para-swimming

butterfly stroke.

Lopez finally managed to win the tournament after he lost it a decade ago, while this is the Spaniard's first title
on clay and his fifth overall, reports Efe.

Odisha announces Rs 60 lakh special incentive for Rio Olympic qualifiers
Odisha government has announced 60 lakh rupees cash special incentive for six sportswomen of the
state who have qualified for the Rio Olympics on 26 July 2016.
The six sportspersons are sprinters Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda and four hockey players Deep Grace Ekka,
NamitaToppo, LilimaMinz and SunitaLakra, would receive 10 lakh rupees each.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the Odisha Mining Corporation to pay the special incentive amount
to the six sportswomen. He said that the incentive would be of immense help for them to prepare for the mega
event.

Rio 2016: Russian weightlifters banned from Olympic Games
Russia's weightlifting team has been banned from competing at the Rio Olympics because of doping
offences.
Individual sport federations must rule on whether Russians can compete in Rio following the country's doping
scandal.
Two of the eight-strong weightlifting team had already been banned for prior violations, and another four were
named in the McLaren report into the issue.
Russia's Sports Minister said 272 of the original 387 athletes selected had been cleared to complete in Rio.
The vehicle, which was introduced to celebrate the return of golf to the Olympics after 112 years, can attain
heights of 3,000 feet with air speeds up to 74 kmph.

It can fly at speeds up to 112 kmph, has a two-mile range and 20-minute flight time and can withstand
winds traveling at 64 kmph.
The $1299-drone features a 13 MP 4K camera and offers built-in apps for controlled flying, racing and follow
mode.
NASA marks 40th anniversary of Mars landing:
NASA celebrated a historical milestone on July 20, the 40th anniversary of the first U.S. spacecraft to
land on Mars.
On July 20, 1976, NASA successfully reached the Martian surface with their Viking Lander 1.
The Viking project comprised of two separate spacecraft together took more than 65,000 images of the
planet and collected overwhelming amounts of data.
The primary goal of the Viking mission was to search for evidence of life on Mars.

Murusraptorbarrosaensis, lived about 80 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period, measured about
21 feet (6.5 metres) long and was a pursuit hunter more lightly built than some other predatory dinosaurs.
Facebook's Aquila Internet drone completes first test flight:
Facebook Inc announced the successful completion of test flight of a solar-powered drone named
Aquila.
The social media giant believes that Aquila will help to extend Internet connectivity to every corner of the
planet.
The company ultimately hopes to have a fleet of Aquilas that can fly for at least three months at a time at
60000 feet and communicate with each other to deliver internet access.
India to make resource mapping satellite with US:
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) are jointly working on the development of a resource mapping satellite.
The Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Satellite, named 'NASA-ISRO Synthetic
Aperture Radar (NISAR)', is slated to be completed and launched by 2021, the Indian Parliament has been
informed.

Scientists are working towards storing digital data in the base sequence of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). Thus
they are seeking to make the genetic material capable to store data for long time in durable format as an archive
data for the future.
Advantages: DNA digital data storage technology has very long durability i.e. scientists can store digital
information in DNA sequences for thousands of years. Information stored in DNA consumes very little space.
Challenges: Making this technology practical and much cheaper using current technology is hugely expensive.
Solar plane makes history after completing round-the-world trip
Solar Impulse 2 has completed the first round-the-world flight by a solar-powered aeroplane, after
touching down in Abu Dhabi early on Tuesday.
The final leg of the feat, aimed at showcasing the potential of renewable energy, was a bumpy one, with
turbulence driven by hot desert air leaving the solo pilot, Bertrand Piccard, fighting with the controls.
The plane, which has a wingspan wider than a Boeing 747 and carries more than 17,000 solar cells on its wings,
began the circumnavigation in March 2015 in Abu Dhabi. It has since crossed both the Pacific and Atlantic
Oceans using no fossil fuel and has spent more than 23 days in the air.
Gujarat govt selects Infibeam for e-com training programme
The Gujarat governments Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) said it has selected the
Ahmedabad-based e-commerce company Infibeam as knowledge partner for its e-commerce training and
development programme, aimed at grooming budding entrepreneurs and individuals to set up their businesses.
The state government had recently launched an e-commerce workshop programme How To Start E-commerce
Business in partnership with Infibeam Incorporation Ltd to create awareness on e-commerce.
Free Wi-Fi at Indian railway stations being used by 2 million people: SundarPichai
About two million people are logging on to free Wi-Fi deployed by Google and RailTel at major railway
stations across India every month, chief of the global search giant SundarPichai said.
The internet giant had teamed up with RailTel, the telecom arm of the Indian Railways, to provide free Wi-Fi at
23 stations across the country.
New artificial leaf converts CO2 into usable hydrocarbon fuel using sunlight
Scientists have developed "artificial leaves" - potentially game-changing solar cells that cheaply and
efficiently convert atmospheric carbon dioxide directly into usable hydrocarbon fuel using sunlight.
Unlike conventional solar cells, which convert sunlight into electricity that must be stored in heavy batteries, the
new device essentially does the work of plants, converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into fuel, solving two
crucial problems at once.
A solar farm of such "artificial leaves" could remove significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere
and produce energy-dense fuel efficiently.
SpaceX Wins Second NASA Contract To Take Astronauts To International Space Station
The US space agency has ordered a second mission from Elon Musk's space transport services company SpaceX
to take astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).
This is the fourth and final guaranteed order NASA will make under the Commercial Crew Transportation
Capability (CCtCap) contracts.
