IT Work Breakdown Structure

An IT Developer has been promoted to project manage a new IT Project,

and is very confused about how to understand the work scope, plan the
work and create a simple budget. He decides to consult an experienced
manager who agrees to give him the following advice. He says:

I suggest you structure the project into five separate modules: Local
Client, Upload Tool, PDF Writer, Import Tool and Security

The Local Client should be divided into Local Client User Interface (300
man-hours), Manual Query (150 man-hours), Auto-Query New reports (200
man-hours) and New company Site Request (100 man-hours).

Split the Upload Tool into XML file structure (100 man-hours), FTP Upload
Component (50 man-hours), Error Checking (120 man-hours) and FTP
Module (160 man-hours).

The PDF Writer module could be split into PDF Requirements (40 man-
hours), Evaluation List (30 man-hours), and Chosen PDF Writer (60 man-
hours).

The Import Tool module should consist of Agent User Interface (400 man-
hours), Read XML file (400 man-hours), Create New Client Portal (300
man-hours) and Import reports (300 man-hours).

The Security module can be split into Security Profile (200 man-hours),
Security Admin User Interface (250 man-hours) and Security (Forget
Password) (200 man-hours).

Each of the five top level sections should have a dedicated team leader
who will work on their module work scope only.

In addition there are up to four other IT developers available to the project

who can work on any module, and change between them as required. The
IT developers and team leaders are equally skilled and work at the same
pace.

You (the project manager) will not do any actual work just supervise the
team leaders and IT developers.
The first four sections can be worked on at the same time. When all of
these are finished, work on the Security module can start. Good luck with
the project!

QUESTIONS

(a) Based on the information provided, sketch a WBS for this project
and derive an estimate for the total numbers of man-hours required
for the project.

(b) Bearing in mind that the first four modules will be worked on at the
same time, decide how the project manager should allocate the four
developers. Show how many developers will work on each module.
Assuming everyone works a 40 hour / 5 day week, estimate the
planned duration for each module (including the work of the
developers)

(c) Use the information from (b) to calculate the overall duration that
the project should take.

(d) If the project manager costs 6,000 per month, team leaders 40
per hour and IT developers 30 per hour, estimate the overall cost
of the project. Assume that the team leaders and developers will
only cost the project for the work carried out.
