The following is a summary of the procedure for the correct clearances of punches and dies and the outside
diameters of button dies for ordinary punching work.
STEP 2 Select the hole tolerance code from Table 2. Table 3Standard for clearance selection
Example: 60.15Hole tolerance code S Tensile strength Recommended clearanceone side%
Material type
kgf/mm2 Precision grade P Standard grade S
STEP 3 Determine the clearance from Table 3 based on the material type.
Soft Less than 10 3 6
Example: 10%1.60.16 Aluminum
Medium 1018 4 8
Aluminum alloys
STEP 4 Determine the die hole diameter using the following formula. Hard 20 or more 8 10
Punch end diameter2ClearanceDie hole diameter Soft 20 or less 6 8
Example: 6.020.166.32 Tough pitch copper
Hard 28 8 10
STEP 5 Determine the outer diameter of the die from Table 4, according to the material Soft 28 4 8

Example: M aterial code 42, hole tolerance code S Soft 30 6 10
Phosphate bronze

STEP 6 Determine button die length L in the design, and then select a headed type or a
straight type. Steel Soft 34 10 12
Example: Length 16, headed type Hard 70 12 15
Soft 60 6 12
STEP 7 Place the order using the catalog number. Stainless steel
