Almostalldragcomesfromskinfriction.Athickbody(larget/lratio)isreadilyprone
forseparationandproducesconsiderablepressuredrag.Streamliningabodytoavoid
separationwillenabletodecreasepressuredragconsiderably.Itisobviousthatabluff
bodylikeacylinderorasphereoraflatplateplacednormaltoflowwillcause
separationandleadtopressuredragwhichmayfarmorethantheskinfrictiondrag.
Incaseofaflatplateplacedparalleltoflow(Fig.6.8),itistheskinfrictiondragthat
dominates.Ontheotherhand,incaseofaflatplateplacednormaltoflow,itisthe
pressuredragthatdominates.Inthelattercase,theplatebehaveslikeabluntbody
andgivesraisetoseparationbehinditwhichcontributestopressuredrag.
