Raindrops and Tears on Memorial Day

submitted by Susan Wellman,
Tabernacle Baptist Church
While waiting expectantly for the call that would
determine whether to march or not to march, in
Hudsons Memorial Day parade, I was reminded
of the many families who have waited expectantly
over the years for the call that their sons and
daughters would return home at any moment. For
our veterans families, it would not be a simple call
of no parade due to rain; it would have been a
far more painful call to a far more somber time in
their lives. We were disappointed by our call, but
they would have been heartbroken by theirs. Theirs
is a sacrifice of epic proportion and we are most
grateful!
Though we did not get to walk in their honor, we
did take the time to honor them. They had walked
to the end of their lives to give us the freedoms we
enjoy today, and we felt an overwhelming need to
recognize their sacrifice through a time of prayer
Courtesy photos and the personal recounting of tributes on this Day
of Remembrance. Led by Pastor Michael Small,
25 men, women and children proudly waved their
American flags as our float was driven to the end of
Tabernacles parking lot and put on display for those
who passed by.
Among enthusiastic waves, celebratory thumbs-
up signals, and noisily tooting horns, we were
blessed to stand and offer up our prayers of
gratitude, sing our patriotic songs and give tribute
to those who did not get to come home and receive
the embrace of love their families so desired to
give them. Collectively, we stood in awe of their
dedication in securing our freedom, and humbly
remembered their sacrifices. We embrace them,
and each veterans family, with our love and thanks.
Greater love hath no man than this; that a man
lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13.
