Part 2 - Read the following text carefully.
When the school year started I joined the hip-hop dancing group and the school newspaper
team. Im a reporter, so I have to write an article every week. Hip-hop dancing, on the other
hand, is hard work but a lot of fun too.
As you can see, Im quite a busy girl. However, I decided to join Greenpeace. Today, this
environmental organisation is working around the world to save rainforests, to stop nuclear
testing, to eliminate toxic chemicals and to protect our oceans. It has
made us think about the way we treat our planet and it has made the
environment an international issue. Greenpeace has protected and
saved many animals around the world by sailing their small boats in
front of large ships to stop the killing of whales and dolphins and by
walking through snow to save baby seals. This organisation has also
challenged large multinational companies like Shell and British
Petroleum.
But not all Greenpeace work is dangerous. My school has a Greenpeace group which gets
together twice a week to make leaflets and write long, angry letters to the President of the
United States claiming for strong measures to protect nature. Recently weve sent our letters
to North Korea, begging them to stop their nuclear tests. I feel I can help save the planet and
that makes me feel like a better person already!
Since Im quite good at French and Spanish, the people at Greenpeace headquarters asked
me to translate some leaflets from French or Spanish into English. They talked about wildlife
conservation, i.e., the imminent extinction of the giant panda and what we can do about it. I
felt very sorry for the giant panda. Its a cute animal and its extinction makes me very sad.
Working for Greenpeace has opened my eyes to a lot of environmental problems and Im
happy I can make a difference.
