Rita Koralevics studied graphic design from the
hungarian university of Fine Arts and has
dappled in various artistic media including
screen printing, graphic design, photography
and animation. having a passion for eco-friendly
products and modern design led to Rita
developing a paper pulp using high quality paper
waste, glue, varnish and some sawdust. she used
this paper pulp in creating various products by
hand with rough, unfinished surfaces and
minimal forms. Paper pulp is easy to mix with
sawdust, woodchips, or any organic material,
which provides practically countless possibilities

for papier mache applications. in 2013, the

designer established her brand Paper up! to
promote these diverse objects (made from
paper pulp) ranging from serving trays and
vases as well to jugs, bags, folders and ceiling
lamps in various styles. her most recent
offerings are the Dome+ lamps, sis+ lamps,
Blokk+ containers and Curl up vases. shaped like
a dome, the Dome+lamp is made from cement
and paper, a combination that ensures it is both
lightweight and tough. the vertical and the
horizontal scores on the Curl up vases divides
the surface into units following the principle of
golden section. while the sis+ lamps have been
created using paper pulp and saw dust, cement
has been added to create the Blokk+ containers
that can be stacked on top of each other. Rita
creates objects in small series and shapes with
the final objects representing typical handicraft
features and unique disposition.

Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from
20th June to 22nd June 2017, and
will showcase new collections
and creative applications of
textiles, home furnishings and
interior decor. From themed
exhibits to inspiring product
designs, seminar sessions and
experience zones, the platform
will offer a quality experience
for business and industry
networking with a participation
of over 180 companies from
India, Bangladesh, China, Korea,
Nepal, Thailand and Turkey. As
the leading business platform in
this segment, the organizers
have also prepared a series of
trend-setting content that is set
to create a buzz among home
fashionistas, architects, interior
designers, retailers and design
experts. For this years event,
the organizers have planned to
showcase the worlds largest
cushion, have planned the ILA
Experience Zone, Special Skills
Zone and Hospitality & Retail
Day. New home fashion
collections for 2017 will also be
showcased at the fair.
With an aim to draw attention

to Indias dominant position in
home textile production and
exports, the organizers are set
to create the worlds largest
cushion curated with the
fabrics from DDecor. The art
installation is said to break
records and enter the Limca
Books as the worlds largest
cushion. Another major
highlight at the exhibition this year will be
the Experience Zone in the Interior
Lifestyle Awards the ILA Experience
Zone will feature innovative concepts in
interior spaces through a design face-off
between product and textile designers.
Representing international design trends,
these concepts will be based on four
themes such as: Exploration with Nature,
Illusion, Heritage and Planet. The themed
exhibits will be curated by a jury comprising
of Lipika Sud, President of the Guild of
Designers & Artists; architect Sonali
Bhagwati, President of Design Plus; and
acclaimed fashion guru and President of
Fashion Design Council of India Sunil Sethi.
The winners will be announced at the ILA
Gala Night on 20th June.
At the Special Skills Zone, live

demonstrations of different art forms such
as hand work cushions, handbag stitching,
hand embroidery and the art of creating
small artefacts with the use of techniques
such as tie-dye, batik on fabric, applique
and embroidery, jewellery making, paper
art will be given by a group of specially-
abled children. Meanwhile, the exclusive
Hospitality & Retail Day will see a series of
business-centric workshops and buyer-
seller meets, to be attended by noted retail
buyers and purchase managers from some

design principles and combining metal with
the tactile warmth of wood, we were able to
achieve what we set out to do. We have been
working with a lot of European brands and
adapting their aesthetics in India. In doing so,
we amassed experience and developed
expertise in this design language. Metal
brought in an exciting dimension of
technology and modernity to the process and
end product. Gone was the boxiness which is
usually a by-product of the traditional
interpretation of Indian hardwood furniture,
explains Avenish.
Colour is another crucial factor that makes

furniture, so that the house itself would attain
the form of a painting, recalls Yatin.

contemporary and traditional, beautifully and with great gusto. Interior

a classical sofa is set against a green
backdrop which displays exquisite
hand-painted wall art in gold foil.
This wall is further accentuated by a
hand-painted panel (which serves as a
frame) that features Udaipurs famous
tikri work.

T
he young squad at Jaipur-based
Shantanu Garg Design (SGD),
like most creative teams in this
country, believes that every
project should be a seamless
blend of the dweller and
designers vision. We believe our strength lies
in extracting inspirations and elements to
create abstract designs and giving them a
twist to develop an individual style, explains
interior designer Shantanu Garg, the firms
principal. Design to me is the consequence of
balance. Be it contrast, conflict or rhythm, the
final visual appeal has to gesture balance. The
blending of different styles and their
interaction is where my idea of design
germinates from, he says. And the 11,000
square-foot Lalit Dhoka residence we feature
in these pages beautifully sums up Shantanus
design directive.
Apparently, Shantanu landed this project after

the client visited one of SGDs completed
projects and found it to be rather
magnificent. He gave the design team a
thorough brief they were inclined towards
art, appreciated Indian culture and were
partial to local artisans work. They also

spatial requirements, they needed the kids
rooms to be on the same floor. It was total
chaos when I first landed at the site, recounts
Shantanu. Many structural changes were

exercise is a sprawling 11,000 sq ft area which
accommodates a formal and informal lounge,

room and a spa.
Dramatic and impressive... thats how

Shantanu planned the public areas of the
house. There are two main entrances one is
a foyer for the guests that lead directly into a
formal lounge, while the other entry takes you
to the private living-dining space which is also
connected to the formal guest area. The foyer

unabashedly kitsch with its antique wooden furniture sourced
from Jodhpur and then reupholstered with soft cushioning, the
khat with red legs, plump chairs upholstered in embroidered
cotton velvet, antique overhanging lights and a floor-standing
mirror frame.
The bar is around 10ft long and is made in brass with a natural
stone counter top. The antique bar stools and pendant lights
were sourced from Banaras and then curated in-house to give
them a modern look.

An arresting, almost sculptural setting, is set free in the
informal lounge. Quirky and cheerful, it features furniture
covered with prints inspired by the colour palette of Jaipurs
famous blue pottery. Giving it company is a wall art and a
collage of round cushions echoing the same hues.

purposes to lounge, sleep, or indulge in a game of cards or snakes and ladders. The
headboard is upholstered in a black and white Aztec print with the four posts finished in
wood. Two of the posts have a brass thali on top which can serve as a platter for snacks.
The left wall is inspired by the Aztec form of art with fuchsia insets to add colour to the
otherwise muted tones used here.
The Moroccan archway conceals the central skylight and acts like a perfect lantern for
the space. Note how all the walls and floors have a subtle grey hue to draw attention to
the artwork lining the passageways.

This bedroom has classical elements in modern

glossy finishes and neutral tones with hints of
colour in the fabrics. Mughal arches have been
crafted in a modern avatar behind the bed and
over the recessed window opening.

other. It can also be accessed from the
research centre through a unique wood-
slatted partition that has a camouflaged door.
The junction of the two office zones had to be
evident but we did not want to make
something that would hinder the openness of
the office space as a whole, nor put up a visual
hindrance. This is what led us to a unique
wooden slatted partition which sustained the
theme of the reception here, says Faisal. Each
of the 29 slats of this partition are positioned

ot So Serious, the fashion brand
headed by Pallavi and Sidharth
Mohan, believes in clothes that are
unnecessarily well made, yet fun;
serious in execution, yet playful in
spirit. This is the same ethos that the brand has
carried forward while launching their flagship
store at Mehrauli in New Delhi. Design studio
Phenotype, headed by principal architect Anica
Kochhar, responded to this brief by
conceptualizing a whimsical space to resonate
with the brands philosophy.
Pallavi wanted to welcome her clients with the same

warmth and ease as she would when a close friend
would come visiting her. Therefore, the narrative
starts with the garden, then under the wooden
pergola and into the stores open verandah. The idea
is to bring customers into familiar surroundings, let
them nestle into a comfortable sofa, and engage
with the brand at leisure over a soothing cup of tea.
One of the recurring themes of the brands recent
collections is the quirky Alice in wonderland
ethos. So the design team chose to embrace this
through interesting accents sprinkled throughout
the store the framed looking glass, the
eccentric hares and clouded mirror paneling.
About her design approach, Anica says Since the
brand also caters to children, we conceptualized it
as a welcoming place with lots of airiness and
room to play. Some of the elements that have
been amalgamated to recreate the story is the use
of grass on the floor and as a backdrop to most of
the clothes; and the checkered distressed
mirror-clad ceiling which adds height and
openness. Copper is used for all the metal accents
and as a main material in the palette, as it is warm
and compliments the cool grey-white verandah.
The designer has created the cash counter from
natural wood logs that lends itself to the outdoor
vibe of the space. The main couture section too
has a backdrop of distressed mirror, to create a
sense of expansiveness in the store. The powder
room, has multiple angled elliptical copper framed
mirrors which add an element of excitement
through the various reflections and are also useful
to appreciate all angles. The team has diffused
lighting throughout the space to resemble natural
daylight as well.
The application of the extensive grass panels is

intentional. The store plans to use the green grass
as an evolving canvas to keep experimenting with,
for each season or event.

ndias first steampunk themed bar
Ministry of Beer (MOB) has opened up
at Connaught Place, the heart of New
Delhi. For the uninitiated, steampunk is
a science fantasy that incorporates
technology and aesthetical designs inspired
by 19th century industrial steam-powered
machinery. The restaurant, with its new
concept created by architect Sandeep Singh
of Studio Interiors Infra Heights, is a design
gem, featuring mechanical parts and antique
lights along with Victorian furniture.
With the aim to reinvent the night life in New

Delhi, Ministry of Beer spans over three floors
with the interiors crafted from historical
elements and anachronistic technological
features inspired by science fiction. The
unconventional entrance itself leaves one
confused and in anticipation of what lies
inside. The main door is made up of antique
rustic wood patch and glass on one side with
a transparent glazing on the other side
overlooking the brewery. A steampunk nitro
mask hangs above the podium. To the left of
the entrance a wall has been designed with a
3D collage of grids, gears and industrial
elements, with a huge steampunk mask of
the Egyptian goddess of beer Hathor hanging
on a wooden base. From scrap tins on the
ceiling of the bar to a partition made of
plumbing pipes, the restaurant is filled with
elements that intrigue you everywhere
you look.
The backyard on the other hand gets an

industrial meets nature look with vertical
landscaped walls and pebble walls. The
furniture here is inspired by the Persian
boulevard with tables and stools in shape of
the Eiffel tower. The steampunk theme
continues on the 1st floor as well, with 3D
graffiti on one wall, a huge bulb signage of
LIVE @ MOB on another wall, a book shelf
that looks like a water turbine and such other
interesting decor. Bumblebee from the movie
Transformers greets you as you land on the
second floor guarding the space from any
bad energy. The decor on the second level is
different from the rest of the space. The
designer has created an old-world British era
bar vibe here with custom made lights,
bell-shaped chandeliers and number plates
from across the globe. The wall behind the
bar is made with extended wooden planks
with bottles kept in antique briefcases.
The list of unique, awe-worthy elements does

not stop here. MOB also has a unique 360
degree rotational DJ sound system and an
ETP installation, which is completely
environment-friendly and purifies the waste
water using specialized plantation certified
and approved by professors of IIT Mumbai.
MOB not only welcomes one to experience an
astounding ambiance but to also enjoy their
craft beers, cocktails and food. As a multi
cuisine resto pub, MOB serves an extensive
and scrumptious menu consisting of excellent
culinary delights and mouth-watering
signature cocktails. The delicacies from the
menu that will keep you drooling are Old
Monk Ki Raan, Triple Kukkad Burger, Sushi

he newest shopping destination for Mumbaikars is
lifestyle brand Zaras first high street store in India which
is located at the Hutatma Chowk Square in the
architecturally rich Fort area of the city. The store is
within the heritage-listed Ismail Building and features five
commercial floors spanning an area of 51,300 sq ft. The building
dates back more than 110 years and has undergone significant
restoration and refurbishment. Architects from Zaras parent group,
Inditex, in collaboration with architect Kirtida Unwalla and Mona
Sanghvi worked almost two years to restore the building to its former
glory. Architect Kirtida Unwalla is the principal at Mumbai-based firm
K Unwalla Architects and she was the Project Architect
(Conservation) for Comprehensive Repairs and Restoration of Ismail
Building. Architect Mona Sanghvi, the principal at AMSA Consultants
was involved as Project Consultant Architect of Ismail Building.
The structures extensive renovation required deep research into

historical documentation of the buildings original architectural
characteristics. The project included many elements to allow the store
to blend historical tradition with contemporary architecture. Ismail
Building, built around the turn of the 20th century,
follows Edwardian Neo Classical style, representing the
contemporary genre of the period. It first belonged to the
Sir Ismail Yusuf Trust, the family of which were among
the renowned landlords in the city at the time. During the
past century the building was put to many different uses
and eventually fell into disrepair.
The most important feature of the restoration has been

the facade, fully preserved both internally and
externally. Intensive cleaning of the stone has
uncovered the splendour of the columns and
balustrades of green basalt and limestone between the
balconies. The restoration and cleaning of the stone
facade has involved international teams of stonemasons,
as well as specialists in the preservation of stone. Inside
the store, recovery of the original brick is highlighted
and is left intact to celebrate and emphasise the
historical origins of the building. Also visible is the
recovery of original elements such as the moulding on
centenary doors and windows which now coexist
alongside a modern and bright interior that features
beauty, clarity, functionality and sustainability, the
guiding principles of Zaras store image.
