Hands on learnin for students at the N Cc Sincayazi KAMINIOLO Fhe Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals is steadily growing its education and animal welfare operations in Malawi. — This month the Natural Resource College students studying for their Diploma in Animal Health and Livestock Production participated in their first practical learning experience in Mpingu EPA. A practical learning platform for students was designed alongside the curriculum to take the shape of Field Schools and is led by Dr Madeline Nyamwanza of the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals. The Field School is delivered through a partnership between the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals, the Welttierschutzgesellschaft from Germany and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The BVM students of the Bunda campus have been participating in similar practical learning _ platforms since January this year. The aim of the Field School, which simulates a real life working environment, is to provide and deliver animal welfare messages and veterinary care to farmers and their livestock. With a dire shortage of veterinarians in Malawi and a glaring need for good animal welfare and care, these students to put the theory that they have been taught at the Natural Resource practicals will enable into practice College. Lecturers and students alike have welcomed this new development and the interaction with livestock owners. Farmers and livestock owners have lamented that the current push in livestock pass on systems have left them with little knowledge on how to obtain veterinary care and secure the health of their animals to grow the livestock sector in Malawi In close cooperation with the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development this partnership will help to ensure Malawi's livestock and their owners receive the support needed for this sector to grow and flourish:
