Ch 10 - Sampling Methods the yellow boxes. Good Sampling Techniques

There are 5 types of Sampling Techniques - simple random - "SRS"

ways to choose a sample to study.
1) assign a numerical label to all individuals of the population, then
2) randomly pick numbers.
SAMPLES are chosen when the whole population cannot be studied.
They should give us the most accurate measure possible of the ex. drawing names from a hat, random number table, random number
whole population. generator

The GOOD techniques are the ones in which every member of the Population
population has an opportunity to be chosen for the sample.

The BAD technique does not allow for all members of the Sample
population to be represented.

If ALL members of the population are not represented, then the You do NOT
sample cannot possibly tell us what the population might really be. need to copy

systematic cluster
1) randomly select a beginning number, then 1) divide population into groups, then
2) select every nth person after that. 2) randomly select groups and interview everyone in that group.

ex. starting with #2, and selecting every 3rd student from the ex. randomly select homerooms and survey everyone in them

Bad Sampling: What not to do.
1) divide population into groups, then
2) randomly select some members from each group. convenience
select individuals that are easy to reach
ex. randomly select 10 freshmen, 10 sophomores, 10 juniors, and 10
seniors
ex. random telephone surveys, asking your classmates

This is a biased sample, because it is unlikely that this

Deciding the correct method . . . Classify each sampling technique.

First, decide if it is convenience or not. If not, then - Ex 1. Glamour magazine collects data on its readers by asking them to
fill out and send in a survey from the March issue.
Is the population split into groups?
