 The Remarkable
Teddie-Joy Remhild
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was
saddened to discover that Teddie-Joy
Remhild passed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
incredible source of inspiration for the
disability community. She had a
contagious enthusiasm, positive
outlook on life, and profound
determination in advocating for
individuals with disabilities. She had
impeccable skills with assessing,
articulating, and addressing the needs
of the disability community. Her name
appeared frequently in numerous
records of disability commission
meetings and disability rights
publications. For more information

Teddie-Joy left an indelible imprint with serving
more than 40 years in the disability advocacy
field. She will be deeply missed. We thank her for
being such a terrific mentor, compassionate soul,
and extraordinary human being.

Summer in the Park: NYC Parks'
Exemplary Model of Accessible
Recreation
NYC Parks provides free, accessible
recreational space and activities for the
summer! Please see calendar NYC Parks
website for accessible events. NYC Parks
accessible spaces include the following

from NYC Parks website for accuracy).
Adaptive Hubs are fully accessible
recreation centers that lead their borough
in offering programs for New Yorkers with
disabilities. These hubs will also be a center
of information, where patrons can go to get
more information on what NYC Parks offers
citywide for patrons with disabilities.
Accessible basketball courts have
entrances are level with the pavement or
have ramp access to courts. Gates that
lead into these courts are 32 inches wide or
more.
Accessible bathrooms have a 5 foot turning
radius, as well as grab bars. All amenities
are placed at a height appropriate to
people in wheelchairs.
Accessible beaches have fully ADA

onto the boardwalk and from the
boardwalk onto the sand. The sand can be
accessed using Parks' mobi-mats.
The Carousel for All Children contains an
ADA-compliant ramp to allow wheelchair
users to board and ride the carousel.
Gardens that are considered accessible
contain a wide, paved route into the
garden, as well as elevated planting tables
and accessible picnic benches.

Hiking trails with full accessibility meet all of
the USDA's accessibility guidelines for trails
and greenways. Hiking trails with limited
accessibility have some access and might
contain steps, uneven terrain and steep

Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines.
There are four types of accessible
playgrounds. Level 1 playgrounds are

Digital literacy is required on a daily basis for
