Peripheralnationalismreferstothenationalistsentimentsofsomeregionsorterritorialentitieswithina
sovereignstate,inoccasionsinconflictwiththelargerconceptofthenationstateinwhichtheyreside,and
tryingtoconstructaminoritysocialspace.[1]Peripheralnationalismissocalledbecausetheregionsinwhichit
existsareatthe"periphery"asopposedtothe"center"oftheterritoryoftheState.

Peripheralnationalismoccursinaculturallyorlinguisticallydistinctiveterritoryandoftentimeswitha
differentsocioeconomicdegreeofdevelopmentthatresistsincorporationorassimilationintoanexpanding
State,[2]orresiststhelargerStatewidenationalistconstruction.Existingtheoriesofperipheralnationalism
explainthattheemergenceofperipheralnationalismoccursinregionswithalargerorgreaterdegreeof
economicdevelopmentinrelationtotherestoftheState,overlappingspatiallydelimitedethniccommunities,[3]
asitisthecaseintheBasqueCountryorCataloniainSpain,orXinjianginChina.[4]Nonetheless,peripheral
nationalismmayalsoemergeinregionswithlessereconomicdevelopment,aswasthecaseinIrelandor
Scotland.[4]PeripheralnationalismmayalsoemergeinoppositiontotheStateseekinglegitimacythrough
hegemonyordominationbyimposinganationalisticsentimentwhichisthenresistedbythesmallerperipheral
nationalisms,whichdefendtheir"culturalnation."[5]

Eveniftheaimofperipheralnationalistsisemancipation,theirsolutionmaynotbethecreationofanation
stateforthemselves,inwhichcaseafederalsolutionispreferred,accordingwiththeconceptof"regional
pluralism"inoppositiontomonismorimperialism.[5]Peripheralnationalismsmaydemandarecognitionofthe
nationalidentityoftheirownregions(i.e.theirownexistenceasa"nation").Theexistenceofsuchnationsmay
coexistwithintheStatetheybelongto(e.g.byproposingtheconceptofa"nationcomposedofseveralnations"
ora"nationofnations"),ortheymaydefendtheirrighttoselfdetermination,secession,andtheabilityto
createtheirownindependentState.
