Why is there a need for this lesson?
Rationale
Science provides students the opportunity to explore their environment. Children
will explore and play with magnifying glass, and learn what they are used for.
Keep in mind appropriate length of an activity for preschool-aged children is 20
mins at most, no more than 45 mins for children K-2 grade)

Children will describe magnifying glass and their specific functions.
Students will acquire knowledge about the physical properties of the world.

PK.SED.1: Recognizes himself/herself as a unique individual having his/her own
abilities, characteristics, feelings and interests.
Students will develop the vocabulary word magnifying glass, they will learn that
it is used to make things look bigger. Students will also learn vocabulary to
describe the different parts of their body.
During large group meeting teacher will introduce the magnifying glass to the
students. Teacher will have them repeat the word magnifying glass. Teacher will
ask for a student volunteer. First the teacher will look at their hands, fingers, and
hair and talk to the students about their observation. Teacher will than look at
the student volunteer with the magnifying glass and describe what she observes,
of the students features, what shapes do I see? What color do I see? What parts
do I see?
Students will than get with a partner and explore one anothers facial features.
What color eyes do their peers have? What color skin do they have?
Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or
independently)

When students are done exploring teacher will collect the magnifying glasses.
She will ask students to share their thoughts on the tool they just used. What di
they see? Did they like it? What else can we use a tool like this for?
Techer will announce to the students that the magnifying glasses will be in the
science center for them to play with and explore.
