Structural Dynamics - ESA 322

Lecture 1
14/2/2017
Overview
This course is divided into 2 parts

Part 1 Part 2
Vibration Aeroelasticity
(7 weeks) (7 weeks)
Program Outcomes
Courses Outcomes (Part 1)
Determine vibration response for a single
degree-of-freedom (DOF) system.
I.e., students should understand the response in terms of the
displacement, velocity, and acceleration and frequency.

Able to calculate natural frequencies and mode

shapes for 2DOF system and MDOF.

Able to design a tuned vibration absorber

(dynamic vibration absorber) system.
Courses Outcomes (Part 2)
Able to explain how the aeroelastic phenomena
of flutter, divergence and aileron reversal arise
and how they affect aircraft performance.

Able to formulate aeroelastic equations of

motion and use these to derive fundamental
relations for aeroelastic analysis.

Motivation
As engineers, why do you need to learn
structural dynamics/ vibration?
Motivation
There are desirable and undesirable vibrations
Desirable (good) Undesirable (bad)
Mobile phones Car engine
Jackhammer Aircraft structure
Exercise/massage equipment High precision machine
Concrete shaker Swaying in building
Vibration shaker Grass trimmer
Motivation
As engineers, why do we need to learned
structural dynamics?
Vibrations in machines and structures are typically undesirable as
they produce stresses, energy losses and increased bearing loads.
They contribute to structural wear, reduced accuracy and can lead to
passenger discomfort in vehicles, structural failure that can lead to
destruction and loss of life.
