Patrick Barkham is a natural history writer and former writer for The Times. This article

has been adapted by Newsela and is about the declining numbers in the population due to

humans. Hunters and poachers have been killing different species of elephants for years. Patrick

Barkham also writes about how elephant species from the past, such as the pygmy elephant, have

gone extinct due to hunting. The population decline is not only due to hunters, but there are also

recently built homes and buildings that have blocked off trails that elephants are known to breed

and feed upon. Barkham explains how elephants

are crucial to certain ecosystems because they spread seeds to grow more plants, so ultimately,

we need to preserve the elephant population.

Without plants we would not be here. Newsela has adapted this article in which Carrington

explains how the human race would function without plants. Farming and deforestation are two

of the major reasons for possible extinction of certain plant species. Without plants the human

race would simply be incapable of operating due to the loss of food and medicine that would

vanish right along with the plants. Humans must stop deforestation or there may be important

plant species that go extinct which could result in major consequences.

cheetahs alive in the wild and states that there are believed to be as little as 40 remaining in Iran.

Saeed Dehghan then proceeds to give reasons for the drop in population and many of the deaths

have been caused by farmers, hunters, and car accidents. Dehghan also tells about the efforts of

some people to step up in order to help the cheetahs and he writes about different ways to

prevent extinction.

Karen Fanning, a writer for Scholastic News, wrote this article about why the human race

should care about the increased rate of extinction among different species. Fanning writes about

how the occurrence of natural extinction isnt a bad thing, the problem is just that people are

hunting and poaching animals which is causing extinction at a more rapid pace. The extinction of

a species can drastically affect the food chain and by killing off species, we are potentially

harming ourselves. Karen Fanning lists a few of the reasons why we should care and we should

listen before we start to negatively affect ourselves and the environment.
