OurprojectiscalledSustainergy.Ourgrouphascollaborativelycome

togetheranddecidedtofocusontheenergyuseonthiscampus.Weare

focusingonhowmuchenergyisatusearoundcampusandhowmuchofitis

justwaste.RightnowwewillfocusononebuildingoncampuswhichisKonia

classrooms.Butevensmallerthanthatwewillfocusononeclassroomanddo

calculationsofhowmuchenergydoesthisbuildingapproximatelyuse.Afterwe

collectdatawewillbeabletocalculatehowmuchofthatenergycanbe

saved,orsustained.BydoingthisprojectKamehamehawillbeabetterplace

economically.Theneedthatitaddressistheoverusageofenergyoncampus.

ThiswilloverallbenefitKamehamehaasawhole.Itwillbenefitbyusingthat

moneyindifferentareasofneedforthiscampus.Usinglessenergyattimes

whentheyarenotneededwilldefinitelysaveloadsofmoneyhelping

Kamehamehainthefuture.

OurproposedsolutionistosavetheenergyofKaplamaCampus,

beginningwithourprojectontheKoniaBuildingclassrooms.Onapracticallevel

asstudents,wecanassistinthisprocessbyobservingandrecordingdataas

wellassuggestingsustainablepracticesamongstteachersandstudentssuchas

lessusageofutilities.However,forthetechnicalpartofourproject,wewillbe

turningoffthelightsandairconditionersinthebuildingbyutilizingautomatic

energytimersthatturnsthepowerintheclassroomsonandoffbasedonwhen

itwouldbeinuse.

Ourfirststepsistomeasuretheenergyofairconditionersandlightsinthe

classroomsovera24-hourperiodoftime.Todothis,wewillwalkaroundKonia

personallyatthebeginningoftheschooldaybeforeschoolstarts,inthemiddle

oftheday,duringthedifferentperiodsandalsoafterschool.Thedatawillbe

recordedonaroomchartsheetthatshowswhatisbeingusedintheclassroom

(airconditionerorlights)aswellaswhoisusingit(studentsorkumu).Ifatanyof

thesetimesstudentsnoticeutilitiesenergyisbeingwasted,wecanremindthe

kumuthroughlittlenotestoturnofftheirfacilities.

Afterwecalculatethe24-hourusageofenergywecancutdownthe

hoursbyfindingoutwhendoestheroomneeditandwhendoesitnot.The

differencebetweenthetwocalculationwillbethesavingsofenergy.Thenwe

cancreateanestimatesettimersfortheseutilitiessothattheymayturnonand

offwhennotinuse.Wewillbeabletomeasuretheenergyusageusing

Kill-a-wattelectricmonitorsPlug-infromourmiddleschool,providedbyKumu

AmyBrinker.WithMechanicalTimersfromHawaiiEnergy,wecansettimesfor

thelightstoturnonandoffautomatically.Thefirstsuggestionwehadwasaless

costlysolution,whichwastohaveenergyrangerspatrolKoniaafter-hours

(borders,janitors).Havethemleavenotestothatclassroom,leftsomewherefor

theteachers/janitorstosee,sothattheymaywillberemindedtoturnitoffafter

using/cleaning.Doingthiswouldreplacethetimers,iftheschoolstafffollows

alongwithit.However,itisnotguaranteedthatstaffwillandiftheydonot,we

willsavelessenergythanwhenwewouldhavewithanautomatictimer.

Hopefullydoingthesethingswillcreateahugesaveinenergystarting

withclassroomsaroundcampus.Itwouldbeeasytosaythatwesaveourown

energyfromturningourutilitiesoffmanually,however,humanerrorcannot

guaranteethatwewillremembertodosocampus-wide.Ifwecanimplement

oursmallprojectpasttheclassroomsinKoniabuildingwecantacklethe40%of

wastetakenbyenergyandincreasehowwesavemoney.

Ourprojectisntsomethingthatneedsmuchmaintenance.Weplanto

usesimple,buteffective,toolssothatmaintenanceofourprojectisnotonly

easyforusbuttoalsothosewhowillbemaintainingitinthefuture.Ifweusethe

propertoolsandmethodsthelongevityoftheprojectshouldalsobevery

successful.

Oursolutionisveryreachableandverypractical,byusingeasy

maintenancetoolsourprojectisnotonlyeasytoaccomplishbutalsoeasyto

maintainforalongperiodoftime.Iwouldsaythatourprojectwouldtakeno

morethanamonthorso,throughteamworkandstayingontimeourproject

shouldtakearespectableamountoftime.Thedesignandbuildofourproject

wouldtakealessthanoratmostamonthtodo,sincenorealbuildingis

neededweshouldhopefullybefinishingwithgoodtime.

Forthepartofourprojectthatrequiresustoobserve,record,and

maintainthewattageusedforcertainA/C.Forthiswewillneedtouseavariety

ofspecialtoolslikedatachart,coloredstickersandstickynotes.Thetoolswill

allowustohaveawidevarietyofadvantagesinorderto,observe,record,and

maintainelectricity,themainpurposeofourproject.Inordertousesuchtools

wewillneedtobeabletonotonlyknowhowtojustusethetoolsbutalsohow

toread,measureandsetthem.

ThemainfocusofourprojectistofirstsaveenergyforKamehamehaHigh

SchoolsKoniabuildinginordertoencourageacampus-wideenergysave.The

toolneededtomeasuretheenergy,thatKamehamehaHighSchoolCurrently

uses,isaKill-A-Wattmeter.TheKill-A-Wattmetermeasureshowmuchenergyis

usedforaspecificoutletduringacourseoftime.Thetoolneededthatwewill

beusingtosaveenergyisaPlug-inMechanicalTimer.ThePlug-inMechanical

Timerisanautomatedtimingsystemthatwillcutthepowertowhateveris

pluggedintoitforaspecifictimeframesetbytheoperator.Theapproximate

costsoftheprojectareasfollows:oneCentury24HourHeavyDutyPlug-in

MechanicalTimerGroundedbyCenturyTimerissoldfor15$,andoneKill-A-Watt

ElectricityMonitorissoldforabout20$.AmyBrinkertoldusthattherewereextra

Kill-A-WattElectricityMonitorsatKamehamehaKapalamaMiddleSchool.So,

wearecurrentlyworkingonborrowingaKill-A-WattElectricityMonitorthatisat

KamehamehaKapalamaMiddleSchool.AustinhadalsotoldusthatHawaii

EnergywashandingoutfreePlug-inMechanicalTimers,sowesentanEmailto

HawaiiEnergyiftheycouldhelpuswithourprojectbygrantingusanyoftheir

electricaltimers.Afterfindingouttheelectricaloutputforoneroom,andhowit

cansaveenergyusingelectricaltimers,wecanthenjustifytheapproximate

costsofinstalling24HourHeavyDutyPlug-inMechanicalTimersintoanentire

building.

Theunderlyingphysicsofthisprojectishowenergyisconsumed,andhow

energyismeasuredintermsofpowerandwatts.Energyconsumedisgivenby

PE=qV,whereEistheelectricenergy,Visthevoltage,andqistheamountof

chargemovedinthetimeintervalunderconsideration.Wecanrelatethetotal

energyconsumedtothepowerbyintegratingovertime:Positiveenergy

correspondstoconsumedenergyandnegativeenergycorrespondstoenergy

production.Acircuitelementhavingapowerprofilethatisbothpositiveand

negativeoversometimeintervalcouldconsumeorproduceenergyaccording

tothesignoftheintegralofpower.Ifthepowerisconstantoverthetime

interval,thentheenergycanbeexpressedsimplyas:E=Pt.SIunitofenergyisa

joule.However,residentialenergybillsforastatehouseholdorschoolsuchas

KamehamehaKapalamaHighSchool'senergyconsumptioninkilowatt-hours

(kWh).Wecanevaluatetheconversionfromkilowatt-hourstojoulesinthisway:

1W=1J/sandakilowattis1000Wwhileonehouris3,600seconds,so1kWhis

(1000J/s)(3600s)=3,600,000joules.ThisisthescaleofAmericanhomeenergy

usage,whichisontheorderofhundredsofkilowatt-hourspermonth.The

electricalenergy(E)usedcanbereducedeitherbyreducingthetimeofuseor

byreducingthepowerconsumptionofthatapplianceorfixture.Forourproject

wewillbereducingthethetimeofusebyusingpluginmechanicaltimers.By

applyingthesephysicsconceptsofelectricitywecanthenseehowmuch

energyisbeingconsumedbythebuilding.Wecanthenuseourplugin

mechanicaltimerstohelpreducetheenergybeingconsumedthroughthe

building,whichwouldsavemoney,andenergyforKamehamehaHighSchool.
