Second Checkpoint

1. Proposal
Four paragraphs typed about 5 sentences each:
(2) a) IntroductionWhat is your proposed improvement, with a short defense of why it is
realistic, cost effective, and useful.
Our proposed improvement is to eliminate cars or vehicles to reduce the amount of carbon
dioxide and carbon monoxide exhaustion. Therefore, the amount of greenhouse gases that
would damage the ozone layer, decreases. It would definitely decrease the rate of climate
change. We would instead, use magnetic field trains to transport citizens to their workplace,
homes etc. As we have seen many trains using magnetic fields, especially in Japan, such as
the train, Maglev, setting a world record of just over 600km/h. It would be cost effective as
well because the train does not require extreme amount of energy however, some energy is
consumed through air conditioning within the train and also from air drag. As researched
from a research paper submitted to Stanford University, Maglev operating costs will be only
3 cents per passenger mile and 7 cents per ton mile, compared to 15 cents per passenger
mile for airplanes. (Ilonidis, 2010). By having less cars, passengers would not need to
waste time from traffic jams and also do not pollute the air.
(2) b) Project ObjectiveWhat is your project intended to solve and how will
implementation of your idea help?
Our project intended to solve the amount of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere and
we also intend to decrease transportation time. This is through eliminating the use of fuel
burning vehicles because they produce carbon dioxide, to use magnetic trains instead. We
also set up a law that for any building, there must be at least 5 large trees within the area.
Our magnetic train, known as the Maglev, would be able to travel at the speed of 300 km/h
to a maximum speed of around 600 km/h which allows passengers to reach their destination
much faster. This increases the productivity of the country and also individuals livelihood.
(2) c) Data analysis of the cost effectiveness of your proposal. Try to include some research
on the cost / benefit ratio of your project.
In order to not wasting the fuel such as coals and oil, our group decided to implement
the electromagnetic trains instead of the conventional trains that use a lot of fuel and finally,
costs a lot of investment and budget. This type of train will float on the magnetic tracks
instead of the old steel track. The most significant benefits of this electromagnetic trains is
that they can travel in a very high speed which can serve and meet the needs of the people
in the fast-paced society. This electromagnetic trains are usually called maglev trains as
well. In terms of pollution in the city, maglev trains can also reduce both noise and air
pollution because the trains will not produce the smoke while they are running anymore. As
a matter of fact, the cost effectiveness will be increased because of the reducing in fuel
costs. The maglev trains do not require any engine, however, the electromagnetic field will
be created by the metal coils that are lining along the track.
However, the cost for building the tracks and including the train would reach costs of $1.2
Billion for 30.5 km, our track would extend to approximately 70 km which would increase the
cost to $2.75 Billion.

(2) d) Project Implementation Planhow will this project actually be completed in a real
case scenario.
In a real case scenario, we need to find a large area first to be the train station that

provides the electrical power source for the train along the track. The materials that we need
to use are mainly metal coils and large magnet. The metal coils will be aligned along the
walls of the magnetic track and the large magnetic coil will be inserted beneath the maglev
trains. The power will be supplied to through the magnetic coil and this electric current will
supplied the changing in the charge of the coils and finally, causing the trains to running
forward. The changing of the charge in front of the train will attract the train to move forward.
On the other hand, the magnetic field at the back of the train will push the trains forward.

a) Writing the proposal --- Mui Prim
b) Acquiring the materials --- Mui Prim Pear
c) The scale drawing --- Pear
d) Creating a model for the proposal --- Mui Prim Pear
(2 pts) 3. Division of Materials Acquisition To complete this step you will need a
materials list and who will supply each required item.
- Toothpick (Mui)
- Paper (Mui Pear)
- Train Model (Mui)
- Wire (For train track) (Prim)
- Clear Color paper (Prim)
- Compass (Pear)
- Poster Color (Mui)
- Paintbrush (Prim)
(6 Pts) 4. Scale Drawing This should be an initial sketch (on our poster paper A3) with as
many measurements and details as possible. For your final scale drawing you must make an
accurate and beginning/professional scale drawing of your project. Note this is a SCALE
drawing so include the scale on the drawing, and on your final future board model: Example:
Scale 1:300.
