2. Respond to these questions.

1. Question: What are non-renewable energy sources?

Answer: Non-renewable energy comes from sources that will run out or will not
be replenished in our lifetimesor even in many, many lifetimes. Most non-
renewable energy sources are fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Carbon
is the main element in fossil fuels

2. Question: What are renewable energy sources?

Answer: Renewable energy is energy generated from naturalresourcessuch as

sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heatwhich are renewable (naturally
replenished). Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power,
hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation.

3. Write the definition of The Great Energy Hunt Technical Terms

Green Energy comes from natural sources such as sunlight,

- wind, rain, tides, plants, algae and geothermal
heat.
Non- comes from sources that will run out or will not
Renewable be replenished in our lifetimes, comes from
Energy - mostly fossil fuels
Renewable energy generated from natural resources such
Energy - as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal
heat which are renewable
Coal - dense sedimentary rock, usually black, often
with well-defined bands of bright and dull
material and a nonrenewable energy so
Natural Gas - Natural Gas is a gaseous mixture of hydrocarbon
compounds, the primary one being methane.
Petroleum Petroleum is gasoline, diesel fuel, and propane.
Energy - Most gasoline is made from crude oil, formed
from remains of plants and animals. Non
Renewable
Petroleum - hydrocarbon mixtures. Included are crude oil,
lease condensate, unfinished oils, refined
products obtained from the processing of crude
oil, and natural gas plant liquids.
Propane A normally gaseous straight-chain hydrocarbon.
(C3H8) - It is a colorless paraffinic gas that boils at a
temperature of -43.67 degrees Fahrenheit. It is
extracted from natural gas or refinery gas
streams.
Biomass Biomass is plant matter and animal waste that
can be harvested to create bio-energy in the
form of electricity, heat, steam and fuels.
Ethanol a clear, colorless, flammable oxygenated
(CH3-CH2OH) hydrocarbon. Ethanol is typically produced
- chemically from ethylene, or biologically from
fermentation of various sugars from
carbohydrates found in agricultural crops and
cellulosic residues from crops or wood.
Renewable
Ethanol It is used in the United States as a gasoline
octane enhancer and oxygenate (blended up to
10 percent concentration). Ethanol can also be
used in high concentrations (E85) in vehicles
designed for its use. Renewable
Geothermal Geothermal Energy is a form of renewable
Energy energy derived from heat deep in the earths
crust. Renewable
Hydroelectric Hydroelectric Power is a renewable energy
Power source. It produces the most electricity in the
United States. It accounts for 6% of total U.S.
electricity generation and 67% of generation
from renewables in 2008. Renewable
Hydrogen Hydrogen is the lightest of all gases, occurring
chiefly in combination with oxygen in water;
exists also in acids, bases, alcohols, petroleum,
and other hydrocarbons. Renewable
Solar Energy Solar Energy is the radiant energy of the sun,
which can be converted into other forms of
energy, such as heat or electricity.
Nonrenewable
Wind Energy Wind Energy is kinetic energy present in wind
- motion that can be converted to mechanical
energy for driving pumps, mills, and electric
power generators.
