The above figure is an example of the general layout of the instruments (BER Test) and
portable PC (Local Craft Terminal) in the stations.
If you need to use an external power supply for the Laptop, it is recommended to
connect first the serial cable and then the power supply cable.
Doing this the other way round could be dangerous, because the power supply unit
for the laptop normally contains an autotransformer, and the difference of ground
potential could damage the serial port of the PC and (or) the serial interface of the IDU.
The people responsible for the installation must have the following basic requirements:
Note that if you never saw a SRA L XD system before, is recommendable read
previously the system manuals.
Check if:
All the external connections for IDU have been done following the system specifications:
All the units fitted the equipment are tested and adjusted at the factory in order to
optimize the characteristics: usually is not required any check on these units while
installed.
In order to operate and configure all the parameters on the SRA L XD equipment, follow the
next instructions:
Check that the Backup Memory Key is properly inserted on the equipment.
Switch on the radio. Wait until controller unit ends the boot phase (about 30 / 60
sec.).
Switch on the PC and connect it to the IDU using the serial cable by F interface (RS-
232 direct pin to pin cable).
Run the "direct connection" dial up connection and verify that TCP/IP is running
before continue (refer to the OMN manual for setting and configuration of Dial-up
connection).
(Note that the Dial up connection is configured at 38400 bps).
Waiting that the window showing time and speed connection (connection
established).
Open the "Radio Management, and run the LCT (Plug In SW properly installed in the
PC) and opening the "LocalNe" Map.
The Security window will appear with a user class and password to be filled out.
Enter as Admin User class with sysmanager for password.
According to the planning and the equipment, it must be SRA L XD configured with the
proper ODU type and in one of the following system type (from the main menu > Status and
config > Equipment > System):
N.B. After the modification of a system type the system disconnects automatically
from the PC.
Wait until the system reset the configuration, and then restart the connection using
the method indicates in the above paragraph.
Once the proper system type is configured, it is possible to set the main radio parameter in
the following order:
Capacity
Channel Density (only for ND/HD ODU)
Frequency mode and TX/Rx frequencies (at 250 KHz step).
Transmission Power value
Coupling Loss (applicable only for 1+1 Hot Stand-by system)
In order to set the frequency, it is necessary to select in which frequency mode the link will
work: Continuous mode or Freq Plan mode.
In the Continuous mode the frequency value are entered directly in KHz.
In the Freq Plan mode enter the Freq Plan value (KHz), and set the values of the first
channel ID and last channel ID (see the OMN manual for more info).
Note that for Frequency RF value, set the proper value, in accordance to the RF
bandwidth of ODU.
The RF bandwidth depend to the type of ODU (ND or ND/HD), the Modulation Index value
(for ND/HD ODU) and capacity.
For more info see the UMN Manual in the electrical characteristics chapter.
According to the planning and the equipment, the external interface it must be configured.
From the main menu > Status and Config > Equipment > Ext. Interfaces, select the relevant
Payload (associate to BB1 and BB2) and enable the 2 Mb/s Tributaries.
From the same windows (Ext. Interface) is possible set the user interface and the external
alarms.
To activate the system set the RF amplifier in operative mode (the factory set all the
equipments with System activation in OFF mode).
In order to activate the system set from main menu > Status and config > Equipment >
System > System Activation Field in ON
In case of 1+1 system, set ON both system.
Note that with the setting in position OFF, the manual squelch is active for Tx
amplifier.
In case the system is set OFF the amplifier doesnt transmit RF power
The new IDU coming from factory doesnt have any assigned IP address.
The local connection with the Localne.map file has a default IP address (192.168.255.3).
After the activation of system, set a specific IP address, in order to manage the equipment
from remote station (after the alignment).
To set IP address from main menu > Status and config > Network > IP Address.
Use this Net mask on both radios 255.255.255.0 (same value for all stations)
Use this IP address 150.166.X.Y
Where:
X identifies the site: the station where the radio is located.
In a link, the two radios are in different sites, so they must have different X values (1<X<254).
Y identifies the specific radio located in the site X. (1<Y<254) (recommended even number).
Note that the above mentioned rules are only indicative, for different rule refer to the IP plan
of project.
N.B. After the insertion of a new IP address the system disconnects automatically
from the PC. Wait until the system reset the configuration, and then restart the
connection using properly address of NE files (new map file).
(To create a new map file see the use of Net Builder SW in the OMN Manual).
5.8. NE Parameter
Set the NE Parameter interface according to the Network planning or suggested from the
customer. If the Network plan is not available configure the NE Parameter with the default
value configuration.
In case the Network requires an interface with the SRA L equipment set the parameter in the
following mode:
From the main menu > Status and config > Equipment > Ext Interface, set the Dext Channel
in Dext SRA L Compatible mode.
In the field NE Parameter select the D1 Channel and set the value "IP SRA L Compatible"
For details regarding the units require for SRA L and Cabling see the installation
documentation.
To verify the Software release of the unit, select from main menu, Inventory > Equipment.
Check that the SVR for both Banks are the same and in case of 1+1 system the SVR Version
between both ODU and both BB are the same.
To verify the HW code of the unit, select from main menu, Inventory > Field PID.
Verify if the HW code of the unit is according to the project specification.
It is recommended to check the 2 Mb/s Tributaries cabling using the local loop-back facilities.
In order to activate the Local Loop, set from main menu, Status and Config > Equipment >
System > Testing.
With a 2 Mb/s BER Test instrument check the correct insertion for all 2 Mb/s cable to and
from DDF and verify that no errors occur.
Check in the same time if the related Tributary alarm (Trib. In) is OFF (Green indication)
when the 2 Mb/s signal is present and it is ON (Red indication) when the 2 Mb/s signal is
disconnected.
To see the alarm status select from main menu Alarms > Physical and Functional > Field
BB1 Tributaries (and 2).
After this check remember to set DISABLED the Tributary configuration loops.
7. Hop Line Up
At the end of alignment phase check the received power level from main menu
Measurements > View the field RF RX Power.
For system 1+1 FD the Rx value must be the same (within the equipment tolerance, indicate
in the field test sheets).
For system 1+1 HSTBY with unbalanced Mounting Kit the Rx value for ODU 2 (Stand-By
Channel) must be 10 12 dB lower than the ODU 1 (Main) (coupling loss value).
Verify that the Rx Power value match with the calculated receive level
For more information related to the path calculation for Rx power value see Annex.
When the link is configured and aligned verify from the local station the access to the remote
station.
In order to does this build a new map and open it with the LCT SW.
To build a new map use the SW Net Builder included in the Radio Management applications.
Connect the PC with the dial up connection and run the Local Craft Terminal application.
Load the new map (example "radio.Map") created with Net builder and check if the
remote/local element connection is available (the related icon of remote/local station appear
colored) or unavailable (the icons appear grey).
Go to File > New to create a new map and insert the New Net-Element.
Insert the proper IP addresses (for site A and Site B with max 3 elements) in the field NE IP
Address (for SRA L XD equipment set the Protocol as TNMP EXT value).
Use the test bench showed in Fig. and set the BER Test instrument with PRBS 2 15.
Station A Station B
To verify the quality of the Link make a BER test on the first tributary.
Connect the BER Test Instrument and your computer in the station B. With the LCT SW
open the NE Element corresponding to the Station A and set "enables" the Remote Loop in
the first tributary (otherwise if another operator in station A is available, plug a hardware Loop
on DDF)
In Station B verify that no errors occur for about 10 minute (short BER).
Perform a short BER test for all available tributaries and check the functionality of the Local
and Remote loop.
Note that local loop is towards tributary side (DDF side), while remote Loop is towards
BB Unit. toward ODU side.
2 Mb/s Bus
Verify that no abnormal alarm status is present on the equipment except the Tributary alarms
(in case no E1 channel is connected).
Note that in case of hardware Loop (cable) is normal that the AIS IN alarm is detected from
system.
Dont insert a loop in case the tributaries are disabled (in this case the equipment detects a
signal and if the tributaries are disabled the system raises an Alarm indication).
8. Commission Procedure
8.1. Introduction
This chapter is refers to the commissioning report model and shows you to fill it.
Fill-out all data indicate in the table (if is available the Hop Planning), in order to verify the
Link Antenna Adjustment.
Fill the Rx value calculated and verify if the Prx value showed are in:
Theoretical Nominal Received Signal: insert the value calculated from the Path calculation
(if available).
Readed Received Power: insert the value showed on IDU from the LCT SW.
Note that the value showed on PC has a tolerance at about 3 dB.
The values of Prx are applicable only in case of normal propagation condition, without
interference / fading and with the MW link in complete path clearance.
For more info for Path calculation see Annex.
This test is refers to 1+1 Hot Stand By and 1+1 FD system types.
Use a BER test instrument (see previous test to configure the measure bench) to verify that
traffic restores after switching Tx / Rx.
Note that the Tx / Rx switch test are available only for Plug in version.
For Single board version the available protection system is only in Hot Stand by, in this case
the switch mode is for all ODU (Tx and Rx mode).
N.B. In the Hot Stand By configuration the switch in Tx side is not hitless (errors-free),
consequently when the system switch from main to Stand By and vice versa, sync
loss and a burst of errors will occur.
After this test remember to set the "Manual Forced BB" field in "none" position
(automatic condition).
Verify Rx switching hitless via software (menu > protection) and active the "Manual Forced
Channel" field to send a switch command from Channel 1 to Channel 2 and vice versa.
After this test remember to set the "Manual Forced Channel" field in "none" position
(automatic condition).
In alternative to the BER test with test instrument the equipment have a feature for test
and record the quality of link by LCT (or Netviewer) SW application.
Note that to start a recording from SW is necessary a permanent connection with the PC.
Its also possible from SW to retrieve the status of Link quality in the last 4 Hours (15 minutes
step) or in the last 4 day (day by day). In this case the control from equipment is permanent.
The BER test with using the LCT SW is in alternative to the test instrument test. In any
case the use of test instrument is suitable for local testing of tributaries.
8.12. NE Address
9. Annexes
Is report in this annex a sample form in order to calcul a Prx value in a MW Link.
This is only a way to calculate a reference Prx value. In any case refer to the Planning Data
Sheets (if available).

antenna
For a reliable microwave link communication between two terrestrial radio sites, fundamental
is a correct antennas alignment.
This chapter is just a help pointed at those never worked on Microwave Antenna Systems
and when this task is new.
The job on each site basically is divided in two tasks:
Installation
Alignment of the antenna.
Verify that the antenna is installed following the instruction annexed with the antenna box.
Each type of antenna has a typical specification for installation. The procedure given below
doesnt refer to any antenna type, but only for the antenna normally used for SRA L XD
System (up to 1,2 mt).
The main points to verify the antenna installation are:
After a visual check of antenna installation, verify (using a spirit level) the verticality of
antenna pole.
This is very important to check when the pole of the frame is mounted on a tower. A bad
vertical position of the pole may result a wrong performance during the antennas alignment.
The picture above shows the mounting for the 1+0 integrated configuration. To get a vertical
position of the pole for all around it, it is necessary to use a spirit level checking all 360
degree around the pole.
Please note that the antenna faces into the approximate direction of the opposite station.
This could be fast verified with a binocular or a properly compass if the distance of the link
lets you.
To check the polarization, verify the output flange from Back side of antenna.
Next Picture shows the back of the antenna with correct and wrong Polarization adjustment.
In case that the polar axes arent leveled correctly the Microwave link will encounter a lower
receive level, the proper adjustment of the antenna is not possible, since the radiation pattern
are not that developed and you may get a maximum on a side loop.
This is the first step and need to be done on both stations before you commence any other
work.
In case the axes arent leveled correctly is not possible align the antennas to receive
the maximum power level.
For SRA L and SRA L XD system, before starting the alignment phase verify that both
stations are properly configured and with all amplifiers in System Activation ON position.
In order to adjust the alignment, refer to the antenna installation drawing, the proper
instruction for adjustment (Azimuth and Elevation).
Only for references see below same example for antenna adjustment points (example from
Andrew antenna used for SRA L Series Equipment):
Remember that the reference signal for alignment is the AGC voltage taken from BNC
connector site on the ODU (for other types of MW system refer to the UMN Manual).
Note that during the alignment it is not important to reach a specific value of voltage, but the
maximum value. The diagram of a typical radiation lobe of antenna is showed in the following
figure. The target of alignment is to seek the main lobe and verify the position of the two
lateral lobes (left and right).
To align the microwave link its strongly recommended to use a voltmeter and not only
the indication of the reading power level used from LCT SW.
Check if the Antennas in both sites are mounted in the correct direction. If you cannot see
the opposite site use a compass but remember that it may not work properly close to a metal
tower.
Start the alignment operation from site A Connect the voltmeter to the ODU BNC connector
(for 1+1 systems connect to the main ODU).
Check if the vertical axis of the antenna is positioned at 0 degree (relative) and consider this
point as a start reference point.
For all mechanical adjustment reference point see the documentation regarding
antenna installation.
Start to move slowly the azimuth at site A and observe the readings of the voltmeter in order
to define the principle lobe from the two lateral lobe.
Repeat the panning in left and right to be sure about the principal lobe and then fix the
horizontal.
Note that sometime to search the main lobe is necessary open the main bolts of
antenna and not only the bolts for the fine adjustments.
Start to move slowly the elevation at site A and observe the readings of the voltmeter in order
to define the principle lobe from the two lateral lobe.
Repeat the scansion of elevation (up and down) to be sure about the principal lobe and then
fix the vertical.
Check from LCT SW on the IDU unit the Power receives level.
If this value matches with the Path calculation (include the additional tolerance indicate in the
field commissioning test sheets), fix all mechanical support of both antennas.
Note that sometime is required to repeat the fine adjustment (Horizontal and Vertical)
in the local and remote station.
After completing all steps fix all screw on the antenna and verify the receive level with the
calculated receive level. If you within a range of +/-3dB you have perform the job.
In any case for all adjustments reference point see the antenna documentation.
