LinearDifferentialEquations
Thefirstspecialcaseoffirstorderdifferentialequationsthatwewilllookatisthelinearfirstorder
differentialequation.Inthiscase,unlikemostofthefirstordercasesthatwewilllookat,wecanactually
deriveaformulaforthegeneralsolution.Thegeneralsolutionisderivedbelow.However,Iwouldsuggest
thatyoudonotmemorizetheformulaitself.Insteadofmemorizingtheformulayoushouldmemorizeand
understandtheprocessthatI'mgoingtousetoderivetheformula.Mostproblemsareactuallyeasiertowork
byusingtheprocessinsteadofusingtheformula.

So,let'sseehowtosolvealinearfirstorderdifferentialequation.Rememberaswegothroughthisprocess
thatthegoalistoarriveatasolutionthatisintheform .It'ssometimeseasytolosesightofthegoal
aswegothroughthisprocessforthefirsttime.

InordertosolvealinearfirstorderdifferentialequationweMUSTstartwiththedifferentialequationinthe
formshownbelow.Ifthedifferentialequationisnotinthisformthentheprocessweregoingtousewillnot
work.
