Dear Mother,

We have been fighting this battle for quite some time now as we began in February of this

year, 1916. Our battle began with the Germans in the city of Verdun near the Meuse River and

we desperately want to win this battle because it was such a symbolic location during the Franco-

Prussian War, being the last major stronghold to fall. At the beginning of the war I was not sure if

I was going to make it. It was very cold outside and the Germans attacked us ferociously. Now,

their attack has slowed down and we have started to dominate the war. The Germans have also

been coming at us from three different sides as the city of Verdun can be attacked on three

different sides. Our scouts have brought back propaganda posters from Germany showing just

how badly they want to defeat us. The posters are trying to instill a feeling of fear within the

German citizens so that they want to join the war effort against us. It is very frustrating to see

these posters though because I know what they are saying is not true. I have received word also,

that this battle we are currently fighting in my lead to the creation of a new battle near the

Somme River. I feel as though we are definitely making progress and we have a good chance of

winning this battle. I miss you and everyone else so much.
