Motivation Letter
Dear Sir/Madam,

With this letter I hereby would like to express my motivation for a PhD
programme in Linguistics and English Language offered by the University of
Edinburgh.

With a major in literary studies as an undergraduate, and Master in

Linguistics I would now like to concentrate on English literature. I am
particularly interested in twentieth-century literature, womens literature, US
poetry, and folklore. My personal literary projects have involved some
combination of these subjects. Moreover, for the oral section of my
comprehensive exams, I specialized in twentieth century novels by and
about women. The relationship between high and folk literature became
the subject for my honors essay on (Give brief description) and I plan to work
further on this essay by preparing a paper suitable for publication.

In my studies toward a PhD degree, I wish to examine more closely the

relationship between high and folk literature. My junior year and private
studies of English language and literature have caused me to consider the
question of where the divisions between folklore, folk literature, and high
literature lie. Should I attend your school, I would like to resume my studies
of English poetry, with specialization in its folk elements.

Writing poetry plays prominent role in my career goals. I have just begun
submitting to the smaller journals with some success and am steadily
building a working manuscript for a collection. The dominant theme of this
collection relies on poems that draw from classical, biblical, and folk
traditions, as well as everyday experience, in order to celebrate the process
of giving and taking life, whether literal or figurative. My poetry is based and
influenced by my academic studies, since much of what I read and studied
found a place in my creative work as subject. At the same time, I study the
art of literature by taking part in the creative process, experimenting with
the tools used by other authors in the past.

In a few years, I see myself teaching literature and going into editing or
publishing poetry. PhD program offered by your Institution would be valuable
to me in several ways. First, your teaching assistantship program would
provide me with the practical teaching experience I am eager to acquire.
Further, earning a Ph.D. in Linguistics & English Language would support my
other two career goals by adding to my skills, both critical and creative, in
working with language. Ultimately, however, I see the Ph.D. as an end in
LAILA MEIKA R/16202241015/PBI-E

itself, as well as a professional milestone; I enjoy studying literature for its

own sake and would like to continue my studies on the level demanded by
the Ph.D. program.

To my knowledge, this program is very competitive, attracting highly

motivated students, but I am convinced that my good academic record and
my motivation make me a strong recommendation for a place at it. I would
be honored if you decide to accept my candidateship to be Ph. D. student at
the University of Edinburgh

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours,

This motivation letter is about applying for PhD programme in Linguistics and
English Language. I chose this letter as my example of motivation letter
because, from I have searched, this is the most related to me as an english
education student. And maybe someday I would like to get the chance to
apply doctorate degree, as well.

After I read some motivation letters, apparently, I cannot distinguish it with

cover letter. I think they are similar. So, I searched the difference. Here came
the conclusion that motivation letter is under the cover letter as its
subcategories. Motivation letter is more specific, which is for applying to
university or a non-paid position.

Based on my observation, these are the structure of motivational letter:

Opening

In the opening of the letter, the most important thing to be written is the
goal of the motivation letter itself. It should be clear, specify what is it
applied for. In this example, it was clearly said that the writer wanted to
apply for PhD programme in Linguistics and English Language in the
University of Edinburg.

Body

In the body, which are the second paragraph until the one before the last
paragraph is about the writers qualification. In this part, the writer may write
his/her experiences related to the application. For example in the letter
above, the writer mentioned : his/her interest in English literature, his/her
purpose by applying the application, his/her achievement, and experience
related to the programme s/he wanted to apply.

Closing

In the last paragraph, it contains a conclusion, a statement saying that the

writer is qualified to the programme based on everything s/he said on the
body of the letter. It will be better if it also mentions some kind of follow up
and further intention, for example, an interview, etc.

RE: JOHN LERNERS APPLICATION TO THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES GROUP

This letter offers my complete support of John Lerner as he applies for a

teaching position. Ive known John for two years now, since he completed my
course in Advanced Fiction Writing at Mythic University.

In this course, John wrote three pieces of short fiction for me, and I recall that
in one of them in particular his revisions after a group discussion of his work
were substantial and well-focused. I also recall that John was one of those
few I could turn to when I needed to spark discussion; he was never
lethargic, uninterested, or unprepared, but always willingly thoughtful and
articulate. He provided me with a touchstone for what was best in the class.

Since John took the class he has kept in touch with me, in particular by
seeking my advice on a literary paper he was writing last year and by
attending a fiction reading that I gave recently. Based on these interactions,
over the last two years I have come to see John as a bright, personable,
energetic, and mature person with a concrete, ongoing, well-rooted interest
in teaching. As I glance over his credentials that he gave me when he asked
me to write him a letter of reference, I am struck by just how much he has
already done in various positionswhether volunteer or paidand what this
reflects about his work ethic. His work in Outward Bound programs, athletics,
and in six different part-time work positions just in the past two years while
he was a full-time student, shows Johns unfailing commitment to achieving
his goals while developing himself as a person. And I see this same ideal
one that he wants to pass on to his future studentseven in the careful
wording of his career objective on his resume, where he speaks of helping
students achieve their academic, athletic, and social potential.

In short, it is clear to me that John Lerner is and will continue to be devoted

to becoming the best kind of educator. His college background and work
ethic remind me very much of my own, and I respect what he has done and
will do as a teacher. Thus, I recommend him highly.

Sincerely yours,

This refference letter or recommendation letter is written by an assistent

professor for John Lerners applying for a techer position. I chose this letter,
yet again, because this is the most related to me.

Here is the structure:

Opening

The opening of the letter explains the relationship with the person for whom
the writer is writing the letter. It may include how long the writer have known
the person. It also explains why the writer writes the letter.

In the example letter, the writer mentioned that she has known John for two
years and she supported him to apply for teacher position.

Body

In the body of the letter, it includes specific information about the

candidate's personal characteristics (creativity, patience, confidence, etc.),
specific skills (excellent communication skills, organizational skills, etc.). It
should be written as specific as possible. It can also provide examples of
times when the person displayed these qualities; perhaps he demonstrated
his communication skills during a presentation, or he demonstrated his
leadership abilities when he spearheaded a new project. It would be better to
describe qualities and skills that relate to the specific job, school, or
opportunity.

Closing

The closing contains the summary made in the body of the letter. It may also
state that the writer recommends the candidate for the position he is
seeking. Itd be better to mention contact.
