1.0 Preface

In this project we are required to get a project plan that contains a structure from
the foundation up to the roof. And we also need to prepare bills of quantities for each of
the following element:
Excavation Work
Concrete for the foundation, stump, ground beams and column level one.
Steel reinforcement for the foundation, stump and ground beams.
Formwork for the foundation, stump and ground beam.

The take off quantities as required by our lecturer Mr. Kamaruzaman, he told us the
structural elements that we are going to prepare bills of quantities only take from the
foundation of the building until the ground surface slab layer, the above ground of the
building element not need to measure.

6
2.0 Background of Project
The take-off quantity is import part of cost estimation, basically is to measure the
quantity of work based on drawing provided. The measurement process should be made
level preparation of tender documents (client), approaching the project (contractors) and
current projects are being conducted to determine the quantities of materials required
during construction.
Measurement process for the building has been prepared for the quantity of
building materials they known as Quantity Measurement. There are 7 purposes for
preparing the bills of quantities as follow,

1. Provide estimates of the construction costs of a construction project.

2. Provide more resources construction.
3. Assess progress payments and construction work amendment.
4. Buy building materials during the construction process.
5. Preparation the tender documents and contracts.
6. Form the basic of feedback to the contractor.
7. Be a source of cost data to surveyors materials.

The Bill of Quantities (BOQ) is defined as a list of brief descriptions and estimated
quantities. The quantities are defined as estimated because they are subject to
admeasurements and are not expected to be totally accurate due to the unknown factors
which occur in civil engineering work. The objective of preparing the Bill of Quantities is
to assist estimators to produce an accurate tender efficiently and to assist the post contract
administration to be carried out in an efficient and cost-effective manner. It should be
noted that the quality of the drawings plays a major part in achieving theses aims by
enabling the taker-off to produce an accurate bill and also by allowing the estimator to
make sound engineering judgments on methods of working.

As a conclusion, all construction requires the use of accurate measurement and

calculation of quantities. On big projects a quantity surveyor is often employed to do this
work. For house construction, it is often the job of the builder or contractor to carry out the
work.

There are some principles for the measuring quantity and cost estimations. When
measuring, either materials or labour or both can be taken into account. For example, when
a brick wall is measured, it is measured in terms of its area and not the number of bricks,
weight of sand, cement and the number of bricklayers necessary to complete the wall.

Computers and calculators make both measuring and calculating more efficient.
They also help in record-keeping. Many computer-aided drawing (CAD) systems allow
items to be quantified from the plan. More sophisticated systems calculate quantities for
orders and also take labour costs and estimates for total project costs into account. The
calculators cost $20 or more, while computer software programs can cost up to $15,000.

When measuring and recording it is vital that the measurements are made and
recorded accurately. Without such accuracy, estimates and final calculations may be wrong
and lead to problems with costs and/or quantities of material available for construction.
Publications such as Cordells and Rawlinsons demonstrate how the estimated cost of
construction can be calculated when the area of certain categories of construction is
measured and multiplied by a cost factor. This is built on the superficial area method of
estimating.
