Brave New World

Certain aspects of todays society are forcing us to become self-centered and controlled

by pleasure. Today, advances in technology are influencing ideas and thoughts that our world is

becoming more like the World State. When theres no choice, it's difficult to agree there is still

happiness.

Advancements in our society have made it believable that our world depicts the World

State. The feeling of being content with your conditions and place in life is something the World

State motivated And thatthat is the secret of happiness and virtue - liking what youve got to

do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their inescapable social destiny (16). Our

goal is to have happiness and choice of life in all that we do which questions if being content is

the same as being happy. The people of the World State have to be content with their destiny and

make the life they want out of it. In the World State society, a partnership or a family arent

conditioned to them though you probably dont know what those are, family,monogamy,

romance, Everywhere exclusiveness a narrow channeling of impulse and energy(40). If things

like relationships, families, emotions, and attachments were considered unjustified there wouldn't

be as many social issues and distractions that continue to bring down our society. The separation

of castes are for stability. In our society, there are standards that make people believe they need

to be met and expectations for everyone to be the same. In the World State there is no room for

judgements but Bernard feels he has a place to fulfill. This is explained by,

half an hour later they were back in his rooms, Bernard swallowed four tablets of Soma at a

gulp. Turned on the radio and television and began to undress (92). Bernard only takes the soma

to fit in with society and pretend he is like everyone else.

The differences in the World State make it its own society. Our world is filled with

choices that impact the way we live our lives. In the State, we also predestine and condition. We

decant our babies as socialized human beings, as Alphas or Epsilons, as future sewage workers

or future (13). The castes dont have choices. They are predestined into what they deserve.

The old man aging was a distraction to Lenina but the directors old; lots of people are old;

theyre not like that (110). Aging is not a condition of their society, thats because we dont

allow them to be like that. We preserve them from diseases. We keep their internal secretions

artificially balanced at a youthful equilibrium (110). Parts of our society that are normal ways to

living life, are things that in their world seem crazy and delusional. Lenina seeing the spectacle

of two young women giving breast to their babies made her blush and turn away her face. She

had never seen something so indecent in her life (111). Lenina did not have the choice to

become a mother to a child. Therefore seeing a mother breastfeed her child was indecent and

unconditioned. The way to end a life is peaceful and filled with satisfaction and fulfillment of

ones life. In the World State they took Soma to ease death which was euphoric, narcotic,

pleasantly hallucinant. Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so

much as a headache or a mythology. Indulging in soma was the only way to their happiness.

The fear of society becoming controlled and conditioned could be prevented by the

advancements and attachments that we allow to run our society. The World State and our class

society were brought together by both similarities and differences.
