Honda Accord EX V6 (Manual) (w/Nav)


Once a mere two-door version of the Accord sedan, the coupe no longer shares any sheetmetal with its four-door
counterpart. Made over for 2003, the coupe presents a distinctly sportier appearance and is also sportier on the road, with
firmer suspension tuning and the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox in V-6 models. The base engine is a 160-
horsepower, 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve aluminum four-cylinder with i-VTEC variable valve timing. A five-speed manual
transmission is standard, and a five-speed automatic is optional. The upgrade engine is a 240-hp, 3.0-liter SOHC 24-valve
aluminum V-6. The front suspension is a control-arm setup, and the rear suspension is a multilink system bolted to a stiff
subframe. Changes for 2005 include the addition of standard side curtain airbags and backlighting for steering-wheel
auxiliary-control switches.

First Place, Mid-Size Four-Door Sedans

The tweaked-up Accord for 2006 does what Accords always docharm us with Honda Accord EX V-6
eager responses and superb control on the road. What we didn't expect was the
newly developed muscle, as in muscle car.

First, the tweaks. The styling has been freshened with a new grille and bumper in
front and a profoundly different look in back as the taillights, instead of spreading
onto the decklid, now occupy the upper corners of the rear fenders, much as they
do on Accord coupes. The center stoplight is carved most tidily into the top edge
of the decklid. When the brakes are on, the Accord's tail glows red with LEDs, the
latest fashion in rear lighting. As face lifts go, this one is a resounding success.
Daylight running lights are now standard equipment, as is a stability-control
system on V-6 models.

Honda claims a mild 4-hp increase in engine output, to 244 at 6250 rpm. We've transmission reflexes, serious
never thought the Accord was underpowered; Honda apparently thought acceleration, best-dressed interior.

The Verdict: The nice little Accord grew


In other categories of athletics, the Accord was always in the top half of the up to be a muscle car.

As a mid-sizer, the Accord is weakest in rear-seat capacity. Space back there is


smallest of the group, narrow in the shoulders, low in cushion height, and least
hospitable to a center passenger because of the hard backrest in that position.

For the driver, however, the Accord is easily the top choice. The driving position has
enough adjustment to allow tailoring for almost anyone. The machine has an
eagerness about it, a nimble feel, light and quick, the result of right-now steering
response and a transmission that's always ready to drop down a gear or two when
you squeeze on the power. Throttle control is so quick the car is almost jumpy,
almost too eager, but not quite. The ride is firm, much different in character from
that of the smooth Camry, or the noisy Fusion, or the less firmly tethered Sonata. You feel each bump, but only once. There's
no bobbing on the springs in memory of a disturbance. So the Accord is always ready for its next move, much more so than
the others in this group.

By a small margin over the Toyota, we thought Honda's selection of interior material
was most pleasing. Both Honda and Toyota have more legible instruments by far
than the others. This Honda transmits plenty of information up from the road, too.
Call it road noise and tire noise, or call it part of the Accord's driver-involvement
program.

With the introduction of two all-new mid-sizers, much has been accomplished in this
class for 2006, but the Honda benchmark is still the standard by which the others
must be measured.

2006 Charting the Changes Honda

Honda is bringing out an all-new Civic coupe and sedan, which will include a hybrid four-door version (see Technical
Highlight below), with a newly designed engine, and a sporty Si model with a 197-hp engine. The Accord gets a nose and
deck redo and a bit more power for its V-6 and four-banger engines. The S2000 is upgraded with drive-by-wire throttle
control and a vehicle stability system. Breaking into the truck segment, Honda introduced the '06 Ridgeline earlier this year.
The Pilot adds a two-wheel-drive version with Honda's Variable Cylinder Management.

TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHT
The renewal of Honda's Civic lineup extends to the hybrid sedan, which receives
several upgrades that enhance performance and fuel economy. Although the
Integrated Motor Assist is fundamentally the same as introduced in the Insight two-
seateran electric motor bolted between the car's internal-combustion engine and
transmission, providing acceleration assist on demandthe latest version
incorporates two new wrinkles. First, the system now allows the Civic to run on
battery alone for brief periods (one to five minutes) at low speeds (10 to 30 mph).
Since the electric motor is always coupled to the engine, the key to this electric-
only operation is a new system that seals the engine's cylinders to reduce pumping
losses. Honda also improved the electric motor's output (from 13 to 20
horsepower) and regenerative capability without increasing its size by using flat
copper wires, rather than round, for the windings. This allows more wire to fit in the same space, hence the stronger motor.

The hybrid that always could have happened finally did. This is a performance car that gets excellent mileage, too.

In the Honda line, this is the best Accord, just as the Civic hybrid is the best Civic. But the Accord pushes the envelope to
include 0-to-60 in 6.7 seconds in a comfy five-passenger sedan while, according to the EPA, achieving 30 mpg city, 37
highway. Yes! Consider: The four-cylinder automatic Accord does only 24 city and 34 highway. With today's technology, only
a hybrid could hit all of these marks.

This primo Accord naturally has the highest price, about $30,000 base, Honda says, including automatic, leather, heated
seats, AM-FM-satellite radio and six-CD changer, anti-lock brakes, and curtain airbags; the only option is a nav system.

for best torque, delivering a net output within 90 percent of the peak anywhere in
the range up to 4000 rpm. So this Accord has lots of lunge on tap in metro traffic.
We tried a full-power launch one morning on dampbut definitely not wet
pavement; the tires stayed on the squealing side of full traction all the way to 30
mph.

The IMA, of course, changes its act to become a generator on deceleration, acting
as a brake and sending the recaptured energy back to the battery. Progress keeps
coming. Honda says the 2005 Accord's regen efficiency is 95.2 percent, up from
the 2003 hybrid Civic's 93.5 percent.

family car that also gets great mileage? Honda has tossed out a new choice.

COUNTERPOINT

AARON ROBINSON
Honda's new hybrid has a majorperhaps cripplingdisadvantage to the Toyota Prius: It looks exactly like a common
household Accord. That's dandy to those who prefer to save the planet in private, but many buyers expect the hybrid's extra
cost to at least earn them public recognition as active do-gooders. It beats what Hummer owners pay extra to be recognized
as, but only the squinters will notice the Accord hybrid's extra badge. Alas, for Accord owners, perhaps it's enough just to
leave ordinary cars in the technological dust. This Honda's swifter punch, marvelous handling, and absent fuel penalty are
delights, even when savored in secret.

BARRY WINFIELD
If anybody's idea of a hybrid vehicle is a small, slow, economical runabout, the Accord hybrid will come as a real surprise. It
has a V-6 that, with the assistance of the electric motor, makes more power than the standard car, and the hybrid car feels
faster and more responsive. On our 10Best loop, there is an uphill right turn at a stop sign, and if you goose the throttle in
the hybrid Accord, the right front wheel will spin so determinedly that you have to back off the pedal to stop the wheel from
spinning halfway up the hill. Add to the plentiful torque Honda's usual refinement, poise, and balance, and you have a
brilliant new take on what hybrid technology can achieve.

JOHN PHILLIPS
I've been hot for 51 years. When I was born, I told the delivery-room doc, "Hey, pal, find the air conditioner in this joint and
turn it on." As a result, I operate any given car's A/C from March to New Year's Eve. In previous hybrids I've sampled, the
engines could rarely sustain max compressor and max fan speed in auto-stop mode, so the thing continued to idle through
even the briefest traffic lights, working counter to the whole fuel-saving exercise. But not this baby. Even when the tach
reads "0," a cool northeasterly blows relentlessly, and all is right in my overheated world. Big surprise that Honda figured it
out first, right?

It's Not Just One Thing


Regenerative braking is the big payoff of hybrids, the ability to recapture the energy of vehicle motion that's ordinarily
wasted as heat to the brakes. Feeding that "saved" energy back into forward motion accounts for 60 percent of the Accord's
mileage gain in city and 38 percent in highway operation, Honda says. But there are many small losses besides braking, and
Honda has attacked them, too.

Why run the engine at idle? The Accord doesn't, accounting for 25 percent of its improvement in city mpg.

Why fuel all six cylinders when three would be enough for much of your trip? The Accord doesn't, for another 15 percent of
its city increase, 57 percent highway.

Aerodynamic improvements, to 0.29 Cd from 0.30, add another five percent of the highway gain.

Easy to say all of this, but daunting to do properly. Idle stop interrupts A/C and steering power. The Accord hybrid changes to
electric steering and two A/C compressors, a small electric unit supplementing a larger belt-driven one. Electric drive has
smaller losses than belt drive, too. Idle stop also means the torque converter loses oil pressure, followed on restart by lags in
forward motion. The Accord has an electric transmission pump to keep pressure up.

Deactivating three cylinders is not as easy as interrupting the spark, either. Even when the rear bank is shut down by
deactivating all the valves, the Accord V-6 keeps firing the plugs. Three-cylinder power is inherently rough, all wrong for
buyers spending 30 large. So the Accord has "active" engine mounts that are electrically powered to counteract the vibrations
of three-cylinder operation, a system of clutching the torque converter in harmony with the power pulses, and an anti-noise
system plays through the radio speakers to counter the booming interior sounds.

On the aero side, wheels with less drag and a small decklid spoiler add highway streamlining.

An Accord hybrid sedan joins the line. Its powertrain blends a 3.0-liter VTEC V-6 with Integrated Motor Assist hybrid
technology and Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts off some cylinders as needed. Honda claims this combo will
deliver better performance than a conventional Accord V-6 while yielding fuel economy comparable to that of a four-cylinder
Civic. The Odyssey minivan has been completely reengineered. Honda says there's considerably more room inside, with
maximum seating capacity for eight and an in-floor storage area. The Pilot gets more power250 horsepowerand a drive-
by-wire throttle.

Unchanged: Civic, S2000, Insight, CR-V, Element.

Future: A Pilot-based pickup with a short cargo box behind a five-passenger compartment should start production at Honda's
Alabama plant next year. In 2006, look for a new small car that will slot under the Civic and cost less than $15,000. Also in
the works: a compact, hybrid-powered SUV similar to the RD-X concept shown at the 2002 Detroit show.
