Directions: Ponder a single idea related to your topic. The purpose of your poem is to praise
your subject, so the specific topic as well as the tone should reflect your admiration. You may
want to consider creating a poem that expresses the gift behind your subjects talent.
(Examples: A poem about B. B. Kings guitar; a poem about Ronald Reagans ranch; a poem
about Judy Garlands voice.)
Your poem must be no less than 16 lines and no more than 20. In addition, your poem
must include a minimum of five poetic devices (alliteration, rhyme, couplet, rhythm,
enjambment, hyperbole, understatement, imagery, synesthesia, personification, simile,
metaphor, onomatopoeia, symbolism, or synecdoche).

Type your explanation of what literary techniques you used in your poem and why.
The first literary technique that I used in my poem was rhyme. I used it on three
different occasions, one being when I said, One man will stand on the podium, trophy in hand
Much like the statue that defends this land. I used this technique to give a creative analogy
between a motorcycle race winner holding up a trophy and the way the statue of liberty holds up
a torch.
The second literary technique I used was personification. This was used when I said,
Engines roaring as you race. The use of personification was intended to provide the reader
with an example of what the engine sounded like to the racer. It also was meant to pull the
reader more into the story and make them feel as if they were actually there.
The third literary technique used in my poem was a simile. An example of this was when
I said, Motorcycles going as fast as a cheetah. This gives the reader a different view point of the
race by showing what a spectator may have been witnessing during the race. It also was used to
show just how fast the racers were going by comparing them to the high speeds that a cheetah
runs.
The fourth literary technique I used in the poem was onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia was
used when I said The clank of gears shifting. This was intended to make the reader feel as
though they were the one sitting on the bike during a race, and to give them an example of what
they wouldve heard.
The fifth and final literary device used in my poem was a hyperbole. It was used when I
said, Taking corners at a million miles per hour. This use of hyperbole was used primarily to
show the reader the insane speeds at which the racers were riding at, but also to transition into
my next line relating to the adrenaline the racers felt.
