Task Measure and adjust drive pinion depth. NATEF 2D11 Time off
1. Make sure all components are free from dirt or debris that could cause premature wear or
failure.
Total time
2. Place the pinion gear into the differential housing with the bearings installed.
Note: Pay attention to the etching number on the bottom of the pinion drive gear; compare to
the old one.
a. Record the number that is etched on the bottom of the pinion drive gear for future
reference: ____________
b. Prior to this, all bearing races should have been replaced along with the new bearings.
c. If there were shims under one of the races, paying attention to the thickness of the
shims, these should also have been reinstalled.
Note: The thickness of the shims will determine how far the pinion will be sitting into
the ring gear. Adjust as necessary. If pinion housing is separate from the differential
case, measure old shims and replace as necessary.
3. Utilizing a pinion depth gauge, measure and record the actual depth reading: ____________ in/mm
Note: The purpose of measuring drive pinion depth is to ensure that the drive gear is in perfect
alignment with the ring gear and is in correct contact with the ring gear teeth.
5. If adjustments are necessary, record the steps necessary to bring the pinion to manufacturers
specification.
