What is TEAMWORK?

Generally teamwork means that a cooperative effort on the part of a group of person acting

together as a team. Teamwork are important when it comes to solving problems that cannot

be handle alone. Teamwork has developed in a particular way, taking a particular

identity(cohesion) and a number of characteristics (Barker, 2007). According to what Barker

said, teamwork does play a major role in developing nor contributing to make someone

become more reliable and gain some extra credit to boost their personalities. Teamwork is

something that can be taught regardless of age and gender. Sport teaches teamwork skills

such as loyalty to ones teammates, deference to a coachs decisions, and the fact that teams

are chosen based on relative skills, not on the basis of popularity or personality (Huggings,

2007). From this statement, it can be conclude that when it comes to teamwork in sports, it

clearly shows that teamwork can surpass all the odds or obstacle that may be blocked their

path to achieve the highest score. If teamwork are really about one person to gain popularity,

thus that team could not do better nor perform at their own game because that one person

cannot cope with his/her other teammates.

Besides, if we work as a team, we could increase accountability among our teammates. For

example, we all know that peer pressure is something that anyone could find it hard to get

loose from(peer pressure). But, with teamwork on our side there will surely work hand-to-

hand to help those whom we might say suffered from peer pressure in an any event or

competitions. Accountability means that the fact or conditions of a person of being

responsible. By referring to previous statement which states that accountability increases if

there is teamwork within teammates, the accountability itself already shows that each and

every one person in the team are working as a team in order to achieve their target or goals.

Teamwork is not about individual or personal target in obtaining something, instead it is all

about team doing their work together without being selfish.

Next, teamwork are most relies on abilities of team members to communicate with one

another (Clark, 2000). According to that statement, teamwork and communication must be

sync to each other in order to ease the process because without any communication how

could be possible one to talk to each other and how can the task be equally distributed to each

other?. These things cannot be happen in an organization or in a team because it will be a

catastrophe due to lack of communications between them. With both communication and

teamwork are well sync, there will be no problems at all in managing a team or organization.

Communications are important in any work fields and should be within the big pictures of

teamwork because without any verbal or communications are exchange between one another

how could message be heard?. So, that is why communication must be part of teamwork if

one team wants to achieve their goals and settings.

It was clear that effective teamwork can produce tangible benefits for people and

organizations (Parker, 2008). From what the author had wrote in that book, it also states that

creativity and innovations could be enhanced, fewer lost-time accidents and we can learn to

be better are the benefits that teamwork can gave to people or organizations. It has clearly

shown that teamwork gave nothing but benefits and all the good things all together. If an

organizations or group of people practice and adapt with the term teamwork, it can be sure

that the learning process still going in a full speed without any doubt. The research presented

here shows how a positivist interpretation of teamwork explains certain aspects of what

happens in teams but that alternative interpretations illuminate other aspect (Barker, 2007).

There are some of other researchers agree with the benefits that teamwork could gave and the

effects of adapting teamwork in life. In any team sports or organization, if they practiced and

capable of delivering the meaning of teamwork, they will create a strong bonds between them

which are also known as friendship.

Other than that, teamwork are mostly cover the long term process in which making

the place a better one. Reflecting on these area of teamwork regularly and making changes in

objectives, strategies and team processes as necessary are vital for the long-term effectiveness

of the team (West, 2012). Long-term effect are will give more benefits to an organization or a

team rather that short-term effect because long-term effect are something that been pass down

to other generations, one after another. Teamwork could not be totally learnt through a one

day session instead it probably took a lifetime to understand the true meaning of teamwork so

that they can cope and adapt to the terms teamwork. It also may took several practice to

understand the definitions of teamwork, but it is worth the wait. Most of organizations nor

any teams that practice teamwork since they were kids, they probably must be good in

handling things and may be characteristics of a leader. In the big pictures of the words

LEADER lies the words TEAMWORK beneath. Teamwork can be improved with

commitment to shared objectives with other teammates. All teammates must agree with what

they trying to achieved. For examples, vision and mission is a word for teammates do

teamwork. So, they can work harder with the team to achieved objective together.

Furthermore, if members in team have a say in team goals and focus, the teamwork can work

much harder. Having team members discuss and decide on team goals would foster this sense

of team commitment. (Yukl 2006)

Besides that, teamwork can be improved effective with shared mental models what is

to come with team members together. As a team, their must understanding with each other for

what to anticipate and how the team can react to develops this sense of teamwork. In

addition, coaches can instill this mental model by adopting different rivalry scenarios,

prepare as much accurate information about upcoming adversary as possible and discussing

the logistics of the event. Through the provision of this team to develop this shared mental

model.
In addition, each team member must understand that they have an important role in

the team that they join. In the beginning, it may seem unimportant and can be difficult for

someone to accept it but everyone should understand that their role in co-operation is crucial

to success. The coach can encourage the team to emphasize the importance of each athlete to

the team. Team members need to see how their actions really affect the team's objectives.

Teammates also have to show that the contribution of each member is important.

Moreover, the mutual trust and cooperation is a next way to improve the teamwork.

Each team member needs to trust and cooperate with each other with members of his team as

a whole (Yukl 2006). However, this is an obvious way to collaborate accomplish great

success and it is also an attitude that is very difficult to inculcate. Coaches should emphasize

the trust and cooperation of the early season training again whether it is through activities

team building (such as a ropes course or game challenge) or shared experiences (both social

and sports-related) team must have a strong trust and cooperation.

Among ways to improve cooperation in the spirit of a team is a collective potential. In other

words, arrogance, confidence, or trust the team must have within them the work to achieve

success. A sense of confidence can be translated into effective cooperation of a team. All the

features mentioned above mean the team's confidence on potential instead. Teams need to

look to know what needs to be accomplished and work together in order to get to the level of

a sincere belief in the effectiveness of the cooperation within a team. Coaches should provide

the potential injection of collective impact, with increased positive and focus on the success

of the team. Coaches need to remember that mood and confidence of leaders have a major

impact on the collective mood and confidence of a team. Effectiveness knew that to make a

group of individuals into an effective team took a keen understanding of the characteristics of

the team. Therefore, the merger of the characteristics of the team that more guidance to match

the strategy of the coaches will help players moves towards the vision of individual and team
commitment. For example, just like the goose that work together each year to achieve a

monumental task, a team which effectively develop a sense of responsibility and

accountability to maximize the success of the team.

Each team member has a responsibility to contribute equally and offer their unique

perspective on a problem to arrive at the best possible solution (Chin, Roger, 2015). This

shows that the team itself is built from the strength from each and every one of them.

Individually, there will be the part that he/she can do very well and there will be another part

that he/she not good in. So if everyone in the team itself can work together as a team

especially helping each other, the team could be great. For that reasons, any challenges that

the team will face can be solved by using teamwork.

The quality of teamwork may be effective by analyzing the following six components

of collaboration among team members: communication, coordination, balance of member

contributions, mutual support, effort and cohesion, (Hoegl, Martin, and Hans Georg

Gemuenden, 2001).

The communication skills in a team must be strong too either verbally or non-verbal.

Verbal communication that can be done well is like giving a speech in front of the team,

giving pep talk, anything that involves speaking is count as verbal. Non-verbal

communication example is leaving a notice, sending email or text messages and many more.

The information given need to be very clear so that everyone can understand and do their part

of work together as a team with ease.

Besides that, the coordination of the team too must be arranged carefully. If everyone

can do their part of the job well, that means that the job is separated well based on each of the

individual strength. This kind of teamwork can strengthen the team strength itself.
Moreover, the contributions of team member must be balanced. If everybody work is

balanced, everybody will be happy and the job can be done as planned from the beginning. If

some of the team members dont contribute as much as the other team members without any

excuse and purpose on not to do so, it will promote hatred among the team members and it is

not good for teamwork.

After that, mutual support among the team members must be promotes among the

team members. If it can be applicable to each and every individual in team, the bonding

among the team members can be even closer and they will be very close and care for each

other like a family. It is important that they are comfortable among each other in order to get

a great teamwork.

Effort of the team too is an important aspect to look on. To achieve great results and

great performance of the team, the effort too must be great. If each of the team members can

contribute a great amount of effort, all of the effort itself will automatically bring greatness to

the team.

The next one is the cohesion of the team that is the unity of the team. How far the

teams could go if it cant unite. But if the team can create unity as their principle, this will

surely strengthen their teamwork.

By teamwork too, a healthy competition can shape among the team members. If

everyone can compete like this, the team will be motivated to do their jobs and the team too

will excel in the future.

A team that continues to work together will eventually develop an increased level of

bonding. This can help people avoid unnecessary conflicts since they have become well

acquainted with each other through teamwork (Chin, Roger, 2015). If you can work well with

your team after a long period of time, you will surely have the feel the closeness of your
bonding with the team that the tasks that given to you and your team can be accomplished

with ease. If anything bad happens, it can be avoid or solve easily because everyone

understand each other and problems can be solved easily because of the teamwork that they

had before. Conflicts that will happens with no matter that it is big or small, it can be avoid

from the beginning because everyone have respect among each other.

Whether it is on the field or in the locker room, effective coaches need to understand

the strategies to turn a group of individuals into a cohesive and successful team. Not all

groups of individuals are teams. Successful teams have distinct characteristics such as shared

leadership, fluid responsibility, accountability to the group, and shared goals (Lussier&

Kimball, 2009). A team too has to set in mind that each and every one of the team members is

unique. This means that each member have their own idea and specific skills that can be used

to help the team be more productive and helps the other members improve themselves. This

shows that teamwork can take a team excel if everyone works together.

Teamwork is associated with increased patient safety (Manser, 2009). When the team

is as close as family, they will have care for each other especially when it comes to health

problems. They will surely worry and will be trying to help each other to recover from the

sickness. This includes safety of the team members too. Whenever the task or job given is

risky or dangerous, they will take care of each other and make sure that everyone is safe from

any harm or danger. They will surely protects each other at any costs.
