ookware is as varied as the
foods cooks can prepare. Run-
ning the gamut from ceramic
to cast iron to stainless steel,
cookware is available in various styles
that fit cooks' lifestyles and budgets.
Home cooks have more options than
ever before when outfitting their
kitchen equipment, and different
cooking materials may raise questions
about how to clean and maintain new
items. Here's a look at some popular
cookware materials and how to care for
those pots and pans.
ceramic
Ceramic coatings are made from inor-
ganic, non-metallic film layers on hard ma-
terials to create nonstick surfaces that are
generally resistant to scratching. Because
they can be safer than some other nonstick
alternatives, some consumers may prefer
ceramic to other materials. Even though
ceramic is durable, it is not impervious to
damage. Use wooden, silicone, plastic, or
nylon utensils when cooking with ceramic.
Metal utensils may mar the surface. Even
though the cookware is nonstick, using a
small bit of oil or butter can help prolong
this feature. Cooking sprays are not recom-
mended and cearamic should be hand
washed with soap and water to keep it pris-
tine. Some people recommended periodic
deep cleanings with baking soda and water
to remove any residue.

Cast iron cookware has been around
for generations. One of the key things to
remember about cast iron is that a prop-
er seasoning of the material will help

volves heating it up on the stovetop until
it's smoking hot, then rubbing a little oil
into it and allowing it to cool. Accord-

maintain this seasoning. Cast iron can
rust, so it should be hand washed with
a stiff scrubber, no soap needed, and
dried immediately. Rub a thin coating of
vegetable oil to protect it from moisture.

Stainless steel materials are versatile
in the kitchen because they do not rust.
Plus, pots and pans can move easily
between the stovetop and oven. Because
stainless steel is not nonstick, heating
up the cookware first before adding oil
and food can prevent items from stick-
ing to the surface. Cleaning may require
soaking in warm, soapy water and then
scrubbing with nonabrasive sponges.
Specialty nonabrasive cleaners designed
to restore stainless steel from discolor-
ation also can be used periodically.

Copper cookware is quick to warm
and distributes heat very evenly. They are
often a tool-of-the-trade when heat-sen-
sitive recipes call for careful temperature
control. Copper is highly reactive and
isn't food-safe on its own. Copper usually
features a protective layer of nickel or
stainless steel to make it food-safe. That
means avoiding abrasive cleansers or
sponges. Another rule of thumb is to re-
duce the heat under copper pans and pots
because they are such good conductors
of heat. This will prevent stuck-on foods,
making for easier cleanup.

branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the
tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a
spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall
and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where
roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always
plant away from underground pipes.

planting process. It's not enough to enrich only the
soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move
out into a circular area beyond where the roots will
start so that roots can expand and properly anchor
the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that
the tree has a large enough hole to contain the exist-
ing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand.
Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare
a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root
ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently, and if the
roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or
push it to the bottom of the hole. Be sure to backfill
the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight.
Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight
until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer
of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent
weeds and reduce water loss. Water the tree daily for
several weeks until the roots have fanned out.
It's best to leave trees be for the first growing
season, only removing broken or diseased limbs.
Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has sur-

here are two good reasons why
there were more than 850,000
new homeowners across the
country in the first three months
of 2017 compared to 365,000 new renters.
The first is that homeownership is a pow-
erful tool for families to achieve long-
term financial security. Second, most
homebuyers pay less for their monthly
mortgage loan than they did on rent.

Theres also a third good reason why
more Americans are choosing to buy
instead of rent. Homebuyers have the se-
curity and stability that comes with having
a home of their own -- a place where they
can put down roots. With interest rates
still low and with MFAs down payment
assistance programs, there is no reason not
to buy a home!

The average homeowner has a net
worth that is 36 times that of the average
renter -- $195,400 compared to $5,400.
Part of every mortgage payment comes
back to the homebuyer as equity, which is
like putting money into a savings account
each month. In New Mexico, a homebuyer
purchasing a $100,000 home transfers an
average of $172 a month to this savings
accountfor the first 10 years. The amount
saved increases as the loan balance is paid
down, culminating in $100,000 worth of
savings after 30 years.
In addition, a home usually increases in
value while the homebuyer is paying down
their mortgage. Even a small appreciation
of 2 percent on a $100,000 home will total
$10,000 in five years and will grow to more
than $80,000 over 30 years.

Most homebuyers in New Mexico
will pay less per month for a mortgage
than they did in rent. Based on a market
study in Las Cruces where the estimat-
ed rental for a three-bedroom home is
$805 a month, homebuyers purchasing
a $100,000 home could save an aver-
age of $154 each month. For a family of
three earning about $25,000 a year, that
amounts to 7.4 percent of their gross
income. Homeowners also have a stable
mortgage payment and are not subject
to rental increases, which can be 2 to 3
percent each year.

why buying a home is a good idea, sav-
ing enough money for a down payment
can be. Thats where MFA can help.
Qualified borrowers those with a credit
score of at least 620 who contribute $500
from their own funds could be eligible

builders talk about the different architectural styles in new mexican homes
O
ne of the beautiful things
about living in New Mexico
is that the architecture is
unlike just about anywhere
else in the country. Thick, insulating
adobe bricks, stately wooden vigas,
elegant latillas, hand-carved corbels,
built-in bancos and decorative nichos
are just some of the distinctive touches
that have been gracing local homes for
countless generations.
styles of new mexico
Pueblo style, southwestern style and
northern New Mexico style are similar, but
somewhat distinctive building approaches,
each with their own unique characteristics
that make them special. In 20 years of
building here, Ive seen so many different
mixtures of styles, said Dan Fulcher of
Casa Bella Construction. Southwestern
contemporary, pueblo, ultra contemporary,
Spanish, it kind of mixes it all in. It just
depends how true somebody wants to stay
to the style. Indeed, the phrase, "south-
western" style offers such a broad umbrella
that David C. Peterson shies away from the
term southwestern.
Southwestern style is kind of a
term I almost prefer not to use, he
said. It conjures up an image of what
ruins the traditional New Mexico style
home. To Peterson, that means an
adobe-brick style home. Its simple,
doesnt have a lot of fluff, he said.
Good solid construction, simple
design, brick or tile floors, solid wood
beams, vigas, latillas, rooms that arent
20-feet tall. As to the latter, building
codes mandate the height of the walls
in relation to the width of the walls
when using adobe, Peterson added.

You are limited with adobe by code
so that you can only go 10 times in
height of the thickness of the adobe,
he said. So if youre wall is 14 inches,
you can only go 140 inches tall. If you

have to do a double adobe wall. The
adobe codes have tightened up over
the years. The energy codes dont take
into consideration the ability of adobe
to store heat. So were still having to
add insulation to the exterior to the
adobe.Still, Peterson said hes see-
ing more of it. Its becoming increas-
ingly more popular to back to the New
Mexico style, he said. I like that. I
want to make New Mexico great again
and build more adobe homes. Because
of the nature of the adobe, building
with it tends to lend itself to more a
clean, straight-line look, Peterson said.

build it structurally, it has to be a simple
design, he said. You dont have the
freedom with adobe that you have with
frame and I think thats what people
like, the simplicity of the adobe. It de-
livers a timeless look, Fulcher said.
Theres definitely a market for using
real adobe, he said. And many people
want to stay true to the building tech-
niques that theyve done for hundreds
of years. Its definitely a good insula-
tion system, so you can use those older
techniques with a little bit of modern
technology like using foam spray in the
ceiling so you can mix and match. So you
have the best of both worlds and still stay
true to the style and look of hundreds of
years ago, but still have the advantage of
technology in roofs and windows.
pueblo homes
Santa Fe and Albuquerque generally
tend to utilize the pueblo look with flat roofs
and parapets, Fulcher said. A style borrowed
from the Native American pueblos, like
Taos. A Northern New Mexico approach
thats generally found in chillier climates in-
corporates a pitched, metal roof to better ac-
count for snowfall, he said. Straight beams
are prevalent, as well. With the pueblo style,
its a more traditional look, Fulcher said.
There are more earth tones, possibly a
range, but typically earth tones, exactly like
what the pueblos built, he added. Theres
usually some derivative of mud and adobe
so the colors are earth tone typically.
Inside of the pueblo style, there will
typically be more plaster and adobe, again
leading to more muted, earth-tone colors.
Exposed woodwork is typical in all of
the styles, although in the pueblo ap-
proach, the beams or vigas are typically room A to room D by going through each
rounded and rougher hewn. And you
can make unique spaces with bancos and
nichos and how you build the fireplace, very typical. Outdoor living is important in
Fulcher said. You can make a southwest
twist with those features; make it a unique
space. Meanwhile, southwest contempo-
rary is an amalgam of styles with a modern
twist, Fulcher said.
