Momentresistingframesaremadeupofbeamsandcolumnsthatresistlateralloadsthrough
flexureofmembersandthroughstiffnessofrigidjointsconnectingthebeamsandcolumns.

Advantages

Providesflexibilityforarchitecturaldesignandlayout

Disadvantages

Producesgreaterdeflectionanddriftcomparedtothatofbracedframesorshearwalls
Produceslocalizedstressconcentrationsatrigidjoints
Requirescareinerectionofconnectionsinordertoresistlateralloadsproperly
Expensivemomentconnections

Bracedframes

Bracedframesresistloadsthroughaseriesoftrussesmadeofsteelmembers.Thediagonal
membersofthetrussesresistlateralloadsintheformofaxialstresses,eitherbytensionor
compression.

Advantages

Canbelocatedinternallyorexternallyforflexibilityofarchitecturaldesign
Accommodatesservicepenetrations
Canbelocatedwithinpartitionwalls
Noneedformomentconnections

Disadvantages
Producesproblemsforlayoutofwindowsanddoorsduetoobstructionofbracings
Requiresfireproofingmaterialsforsteelmemberssothattakesupspace
Needforlargegussetplatesforconnectionsbetweenbeamsandcolumns

Advantages

Costefficientsinceonlyafewshearwallsarerequired
Havelargestiffnessandstrengthforresistance
Canprovidetorsionalresistancetostructureifplacedinasymmetricallayout
Canbeusedasfirecompartmentwalls,stairs,orliftshafts
Willnotobstructarchitecturallayout

Disadvantages

Producelargeeffectsofoverturningonshearwalls
Createslargebearingpressureforfoundationsduetoselfweightofwalls
