Newly Certified Industrial Hygienist within
the Environmental Protection Department

R
ecently, Mr. Ahmed Al-Yami, an Industrial Hygienist within
the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), received the
industrial hygiene certification designation. A Certified Industrial
Hygienist (CIH) designation indicates that individuals have met
the requirements for education and experience and through rigorous
examinations have demonstrated their knowledge in several key health
science subject areas (e.g., toxicology, noise and vibration, analytical
chemistry, air monitoring and instrumentation, ethics, engineering 43
controls and ventilation, biohazards, program management, etc.).
According to the ABIH statistics, the average annual passing rate is 39%, which reflects the high
standard for becoming a CIH. Ahmed is the second Saudi to attain the CIH and one of the few CIHS
in the Middle East.

The certification is globally recognized and signifies a very high level of competency as an industrial
hygienist. The CIH certification program is administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene,
based in the United States. Congratulations to Ahmed Al Yami, CIH.

Employees Recognized as Professional


Engineers (PE) within the Environmental
Protection Department

I
n pursuit of the Engineering Services strategy to develop its
professional staff, an EPD Environmental Engineer, Ali Al-Shamrani,
has been certified as Professional Engineer (PE) in the area of
Environment. The certification was obtained through the Saudi
Council of Engineers (SCE) in 2012. Achievement of the PE certification
is considered to be an accomplishment of the highest order, signifying
strong professional and ethical standards in the field of environmental
management.
Ali works with the Land and Groundwater Protection Unit of the EPD
Environmental Engineering Division. Being licensed as a PE is an important distinction and can
enhance Alis career options. Many engineering jobs require a PE license to work as an engineering
consultant or senior engineer, testify as an expert witness, conduct patent work, or advertise to
provide engineering services. Congratulations to Ali Al-Shamrani.
