Im sure you are curious to find out as much as possible about the IELTS
Speaking test. So why dont we begin by looking at the format of the Speaking
Test. In the IELTS Speaking Test there is one candidate, that will be you, and
one examiner. The test is between 11 and 14 minutes long. The complete test
is recorded onto a recording device in case your performance needs to be
checked by another examiner. There are three parts in the IELTS Speaking Test
and each of the different parts gives you a chance to use a range of speaking
skills.
Now lets talk about how the Speaking Test is assessed. The examiner will
assess your speaking ability in four areas. Firstly, fluency and coherence. What
exactly do these mean? Well, fluency means how well you can speak
continuously without needing to stop, and coherence means how clearly you
organise and join your ideas together when you speak. Secondly, lexical
resource, this means using a range of vocabulary to express your ideas clearly.
Thirdly, your grammatical range and accuracy. This means how well you can
use English grammar. And finally, pronunciation. Now, lets talk about Part 1 of
the Speaking Test. In Part 1, you and the examiner introduce yourselves. The
examiner checks your identity document, usually your passport, and then the
examiner asks you some questions about familiar topics such as work or study,
family, the place where you live or maybe things that you do in your free time.
This section of the test lasts between 4 to 5 minutes. Lets take a look at what
you can expect in Part
1. Examiner: Good afternoon. My names Stephen.
Candidate: Good afternoon. Examiner: Can you tell me your full name please?
Candidate: My names Priya Long. Examiner: Thank you. What shall I call you?
Candidate: Please call me Priya. Examiner: Can I see your identification please,
Priya? Candidate: Sure, heres my passport.
Examiner: Thank you. Thats fine. Now in this first part of the test Im going to
ask you some questions about yourself. Do you work or are you a student?
Candidate: Well, at the moment Im still studying Now, Ill talk about Part 2 of
the Speaking Test. In this part, the examiner will give you a task card
containing a topic and some points to speak about. You will then have one
minute to prepare and make some notes to use when you are speaking. After
this minute of preparation, you need to speak about the topic for one to two
minutes. The examiner will just listen to you.
Lets look at an example of Part 2.
Examiner: Thank you. Now in this part of the test Im going to give you a topic
and Id like you to talk about it for one to two minutes. Before you start, you
have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some
notes if you wish. Do you understand what you have to do?
Candidate: Yes
Examiner: Heres some paper and a pencil for making notes and here is your
topic. Id like you to describe a memorable trip.
Remember you have one to two minutes. Ill stop you when the time is up. Can
you start speaking now please? Candidate: Okay, one trip that really stands out
in my memory is a camping holiday I did in North Queensland in the Summer of
2014
Finally, lets look at Part 3 of the Speaking Test. In Part 3, the examiner asks the
candidate some more abstract questions related to the topic that was
introduced in Part 2. So, for example, if you had to talk about a memorable trip
that you took in Part 2, then the questions in Part 3 will be related to the theme
of travel and tourism, but the questions will not ask about your own
experiences, but instead will be more abstract. This part of the Speaking Test
lasts 4 to 5 minutes.
Lets see some examples of the kind of questions you can expect in Part 3.
Examiner: Weve been talking about a memorable trip and Id like to discuss
with you one or two more general questions related to this. Lets consider first
of all the way that people travel. How is the way people travel today different
from the way they travelled 100 years ago?
Candidate: Well, there have been enormous changes. I suppose one of the
biggest influences has been the development of air transport
So now you have some basic information. But remember, although these facts
are important background knowledge, there is a lot more to learn which will
help you do well in the IELTS Speaking Test.
You will then have one minute to prepare and make some notes to use
when you are speaking.
A continuacin, tendr un minuto para preparar y hacer algunas notas
para usar cuando usted est hablando.

Lets look at Part 1 of the Speaking Test, the introduction. Part 1 of the
Speaking Test is 4 to 5 minutes in length and has two sections, the introduction
and the interview.
To begin with, the examiner starts the recording device to record the test. After
that, you and the examiner introduce yourselves. The examiner asks you your
name, where you are from, and also asks to see your identification.
After the introduction, the interview part begins. In this part, you have to
answer some questions; firstly about familiar topics such as your hometown or
your work or study. The examiner then moves on to ask you questions on topics
which could include for example, food, your free time, or movies or music, or
maybe holidays or festivals. Overall though, the questions are about you and
your life experiences.
What do you like about living in your hometown? What dont you like about
living in your hometown?
These are some of the questions the examiner might ask you in Part 1 of the
Speaking Test.
The examiner will ask you questions about familiar topics.
Other examples of topics might include food, sport, or hobbies. If the topic is
food for example, the examiner might ask you questions such as:
What kind of food do you like? Or Do you enjoy cooking? To answer these
questions, you need to talk about how much you like or dislike them.
Here are some natural expressions for saying how much you like things. You
can use these expressions instead of always using I like. Notice that the
expressions can be made stronger or weaker by the words in brackets.
On the other hand, if you want to talk about dislikes, here are some other
expressions you can use instead of always using the phrase I dont like.
Now you will see some examples. Listen carefully for the expressions that the
candidate uses to talk about what they like and dislike.
Examiner: Do you like cooking?
Candidate: Yes, I'm really into cooking. I really enjoy trying out new recipes and
cooking a meal for my friends and family. Im fond of lots of different kinds of
food, but I'm not really a fan of food that is too spicy.
Examiner: Do you like playing any sports? Candidate: To be honest, these days
I'm not very keen on playing sports, but in the past, I was quite fond of playing
tennis.
Examiner: What do you like doing in your free time?
Candidate: Im really into hiking and camping, but I am also fond of going to
the beach.
Apart from that, I enjoy hanging out with my friends.
Did you notice how the candidate used a variety of phrases to express their
likes and dislikes?
Remember, in Part 1 of the Speaking Test, it is important to show the examiner
a range of language.
Here are some common expressions for speaking about likes and
dislikes.
A. These verbs all mean "like" or "dislikes" and are usually followed by
the "ing" (gerund):
B. After the verbs "hate, "love", "like" or "can't bear" we can usually
use both the "ing" or "to + verb" pattern.
I can't bear eating ice-cream on the beach. OR I can't bear to eat ice-
cream on the beach.
Puede utilizar estas expresiones en lugar de usar siempre "Me gusta". Observe
que las expresiones pueden hacerse ms fuertes o ms dbiles con las
palabras entre parntesis.
Im a (huge/big) fan of Soy un (enorme / grande) fan de ...
Im (really) into Estoy realmente en
Im (really/quite) keen on Estoy (realmente / bastante) interesado
en ...
Im (really/quite) fond of Soy (realmente / bastante) amante de ...
Im not (really) a fan of No soy (realmente) un fan de ...
Im not (really) into No estoy (realmente) en ...
Im not (very) keen on No estoy muy interesado en
Im not (very) fond of No estoy (muy) encariado con ...
(e.g. keen on, fond of, a fan of)
(por ejemplo, interesados en, aficionados, fanticos)
Notice that some expressions use prepositions and articles (e.g. keen on, fond
of, a fan of) and that we use modifiers (quite, really, very, absolutely) to
intensify or soften the meaning of the verbs and modifiers (big, huge) to
intensify the meaning of nouns.

Trate de usar ambos patrones el mismo nmero de veces, pero conteste las
preguntas honestamente sobre usted.
1. Now lets talk about your home town. What kind of place is it?
3. Now lets talk about your accommodation. Tell me about the kind of
accommodation you live in.
4. Now lets talk about festivals. Do you feel that festivals are
important for a country?
Ahora hablemos de su ciudad natal. Que tipo de lugar es este?

Ahora hablemos de los festivales. Sientes que los festivales son importantes
para un pas?
Por ltimo, piensa en hablar en "trozos". Con esto quiero decir, hablar en frases
ms que en palabras individuales. Por ejemplo, cuando decimos 'fish and
chips', no decimos 'fish-and-chips', decimos 'fish' n 'chips'.
Ahora veamos algunos ejemplos de buena pronunciacin.
Remember, when answering the examiners questions, try to pronounce the
words clearly and use the aspects of pronunciation featured in this lesson.

In this unit, you learned about Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking Test. Remember, in
this part of the test, the examiner will ask you some questions about familiar
topics. You may be asked to talk about yourself, your family, where you live,
your likes and dislikes, your hobbies, and so on. Remember to extend your
answers with details, examples and reasons.
Throughout the exam, the examiner will be listening to your responses and
assessing your level of spoken English. The examiner will focus on four main
areas:
fluency and coherence. Fluency means how well you can speak continuously
without needing to stop, while coherence refers to how clearly you organise
and link your ideas together when you speak. Lexical resource, that is, your
ability to accurately use a range of vocabulary and expressions to clearly
express your ideas.
Grammatical range and accuracy, or how well you can use English grammar,
and pronunciation, or how clearly and naturally you produce the sounds of
English.
Now think about your strengths and weaknesses in these four areas. Are there
areas you feel confident with? Are there some you perhaps need to practice
more?
Take the time to look at how you answer questions, remembering to focus on
your fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy
and pronunciation.
Hello.

So the first thing you need to do when the examiner gives you the task card is
to read it carefully so that you understand what you have to talk about. In this
case the task card asks you to, Describe a special occasion in your life. This is
your overall topic. The task cards always begin with the word describe. You
then need to look at the bullet points underneath. There are always three bullet
points and they are a guide for the candidate. That is, they are there to help
you think of what to say and also help you organise your talk. The bullet points
always begin with a word such as where, when, who, what, how or why. So in
the case of this task, you should talk about where and when the special
occasion occurred, and who was there. Underneath the bullet points you will
see one final instruction, in this case you are asked to explain how you felt on
this special occasion'. This final instruction often begins with explain why or
explain how. Just remember that the bullet points are there as a guide to help
you. The most important thing to do is to talk about the overall topic.
Remember that before you speak you have one minute of preparation time.
During this time you can make some notes on a piece of paper that the
examiner will give you. It is not necessary to make notes, but writing notes can
help you stay focused on the topic. Your notes are for your benefit only. They
will not be marked by the examiner. It is best to keep your notes brief. Dont try
to write whole sentences, because remember, you only have one minute. If it
helps you, you can use abbreviations and symbols. Lets take a look at an
example.
As you can see, this candidate has kept his notes brief. He has not written full
sentences and he has used abbreviations and symbols. He has also tried to
write something for each bullet point.
So remember, in order to make the most of your one minute preparation time
in Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking Test, first, analyse the task, then, make notes if
you want to so that you can plan what you are going to say.
After practising writing notes for the task cards, I:
read the task card carefully

Saying More
Diciendo ms
You can use the bullet points to help you organise your talk. They follow a
logical order. For example, in this task, youre required to talk about a special
occasion, such as a wedding or a graduation. Note the keywords in the task.
When you describe this occasion, you should talk about where and when it
happened and who was there. You can also describe how you felt.
Siguen un orden lgico. Por ejemplo, en esta tarea, se le requiere que hable de
una ocasin especial, como una boda o una graduacin. Tenga en cuenta las
palabras clave de la tarea. Cuando describas esta ocasin, debes hablar de
dnde y cundo sucedi y quin estuvo all. Tambin puedes describir cmo te
sentiste.
For this reason, its a good idea to learn how to extend your response, and to
say more, by giving reasons and examples. One method that you can use to
help expand your answer is the PREP method. It works like this: P is for Point.
The first thing you do is to make your point. R is for Reason. Next you give a
reason why. E is for Example. You might want to give an example. P is for Point
again. So, in other words, you re-state your point. Lets look at an example. The
candidate is talking about a special occasion in his life, his graduation. Notice
how he uses this technique to extend his answer. Also notice how he gives
reasons and examples to illustrate his points. Candidate: The graduation
ceremony was held in a concert hall near my school. This hall was chosen
because of its size. It was really big, so there was enough room for our family
members and friends to attend. We couldnt have the ceremony at our school
because there wasnt really enough space for everyone.
The ceremony was held in our final week of school. Wed finished all our exams,
so we were just hanging around, chatting, packing up our stuff, that sort of
thing. In extract 1, notice how he expanded his answer by giving reasons by
saying, 'This hall was chosen because of its size. Its really big, so there was
enough room for all our family members and friends to attend. We couldnt
have the ceremony at our school because there wasnt really enough space for
everyone.' In extract 2, did you hear how he extended his response by giving
examples by saying, 'Wed finished all our exams, so we were just hanging
around, chatting, packing up our stuff, that sort of thing'. So thats a look at
how you can say more in Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking Test. You can use the
bullet points on the task card to give you ideas and guide you, and you can
extend your response by giving reasons and examples. If you do this
effectively, you should feel more confident about saying more in the long turn.
Remember, when answering the examiners questions, try to extend your
answer by giving a reason or an example, or both.
Por esta razn, es una buena idea aprender cmo extender su respuesta, y
decir ms, dando razones y ejemplos. Un mtodo que puede utilizar para
ayudar a expandir su respuesta es el mtodo PREP. Funciona as: P es para
Point. La primera cosa que usted hace es hacer su punto. R es por la razn. A
continuacin, dar una razn por la cual. E es por ejemplo. Tal vez quieras dar
un ejemplo. P es para Punto de nuevo. As que, en otras palabras, usted re-
afirma su punto. Veamos un ejemplo. El candidato est hablando de una
ocasin especial en su vida, su graduacin. Observe cmo usa esta tcnica
para extender su respuesta. Tambin observe cmo l da razones y ejemplos
No podramos
tener la ceremonia en nuestra escuela porque no haba espacio suficiente para
todos ". En el extracto 2, escuchaste cmo extendi su respuesta dando
ejemplos diciendo: "Habamos terminado todos nuestros exmenes, as que
estbamos simplemente dando vueltas, charlando, empacando nuestras cosas,

Read the task card carefully and use the bullet points
to guide you in the organisation of your talk.
Remember to extend your response with reasons and
examples and keep talking until the examiner tells you
to stop.
Anyway, it was a great day'. Here are some other examples of how you can end
your talk. These phrases will help you show that you have finished your talk or
are close to finishing.
'Finally''Finalmente'

terminado su charla o est cerca de terminar.
Elija una o dos frases que usted se sienta cmodo y practique con diferentes
temas.
All in all, it was quite a depressing book, but I really learned something from it.
En general, fue un libro bastante deprimente, pero realmente aprend algo de
eso.
Lets look at some examples of the types of questions you might be asked in
Part 3 of the Speaking Test.
If for example, your Part 2 topic was about describing a special occasion, then
the examiner could ask you questions related to this. Here are some examples.
For special occasions, the examiner may ask you:
what are some different special occasions celebrated in your country?
What clothing is worn at these special occasions?
Why do you think that we celebrate special occasions?
On the topic of family, you may be asked:
how important is it in your view, for families to share special occasions?
What are some of the changes that have occurred in family life in recent years?
How do you think that family life may change in the future?
For entertainment, the examiner may ask you:
what are the different forms of popular entertainment in your country?
How was the entertainment available for your grandparents different
from the entertainment available today?
What forms of entertainment do you think will be popular in the future?
As you can see, the kinds of questions you are asked in Part 3 are more
challenging than the previous two parts of the Speaking Test. Rather than
focusing on your own experiences, the questions in Part 3 are designed to see
how well you can express your opinions and discuss and speculate about
various topics.

Answer
Correct:
Familiar topics are generally in Part 1. In Part 3, the examiner will ask you
questions based on the topic of Part 2, and it might be about how something has
changed over time or to give your opinion about what might be true in the future.
For example, she said, 'I think that parents have a vital role'. What tense is
that? Thats right, its the present simple tense. She is using present simple
here to talk about something that is generally true.
She also said, 'I think parents roles have changed'. Here she used present
perfect to show that the situation has changed, from the past until now.
And notice how she said, 'Fifty years ago, not many mothers worked', because
she was talking about a time in the past, she used the past simple tense.
Right, youve been talking about a film that you have seen,
and Id just like to ask you one or two more general questions
related to this.
How would you compare watching films in the cinema to watching DVDs at
home?
Pay attention to the endings of words, especially the consonants, like /t/
or /d/.
Can you see how the words that you stress help you enhance your
meaning
