YOUR MIND.
Book of the Day: The House of the Scorpion
Matteo Alacrn was not born: He was Harvested. His
DNA came from El Patrn, lord of a country called Opium- a
strip of poppy fields lying between the U.S. and what was
once called Mexico. Matts first cell split and divided inside a
petri dish. Then he was placed in the womb of a cow, where
he continued the miraculous journey from embryo to fetus to
baby. He is a boy now, but most consider him a monster-
except for El Patrn. El Patrn loves Matt as he loves
himself, because Matt is himself. As Matt struggles to
understand his existence, he is threatened by a sinister cast
of characters, including El Patrn power-hungry family, and
he is surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards.
Escape is only chance Matt has to survive. But escape from
the Alacrn Estate is no guarantee of freedom, because
Matt is marked by his difference in ways he doesnt even
suspect.

But on this warm evening, three children do not return from
the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find
only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror,
wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single
detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a

detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a
secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in
the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddoxhis
partner and closest friendfind themselves investigating a
case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.
Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide
him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the
case before him and that of his own shadowy past.
