Homework and Quizzes. Homework will be assigned, but not collected. Instead, each
week in discussion section starting with the second full week, there will be a 5 minute quiz
with one question based on the homework. Each quiz will be graded out of 5 points. There
will be no quiz for the last week of homework, but there will be a question on the final
taken from the final homework assignment.

Quizzes can only be taken in your assigned section. In particular, if you are in a Tuesday
section, you cannot take your quiz on Thursday. There will be no exceptions, and no make
up quizzes. A missed quiz will count for a score of zero. To make up for this, the lowest 2
quizzes will be dropped.

Below, Ive given a tentative list of the subject material for each quiz, along with the
assigned problems. These will be updated throughout the quarter to reflect our progress
through the material. Please check back regularly.

For final the practice final
Exams. There are two midterms and a final exam.
The first midterm will be on Monday Oct 19 during lecture.
The second midterm will be on Friday Nov 13 during lecture.
Final exam: Thursday, December 10, 2015, 3:00pm-6:00pm
There will be no makeup exams. A missed exam will count for a zero for that exam. (See
grading option (2).)
Cheat sheets for exams. For each exam, students may bring a cheat sheet. Each
student must prepare their own handwritten cheat sheet. For the first midterm, the cheat
sheet may consist of one side of one standard sheet of paper. For the second midterm and
final, the cheat sheet may consist of two sides of one standard sheet of paper.
Grading. There are two grading options for each student:
(1) 20% Quizzes 20% Midterm 1, 20% Midterm 2, 39% Final 1% Completion of course
evaluation
(2) 20% Quizzes 20% higher midterm, 59% Final 1% Completion of course evaluation
I will automatically pick the option that results in a higher grade.
If a student must miss more than one test for reasons beyond their control, in extremely
rare circumstances, with prior consent from the instructor, the final will count for a higher
percent of their grade.
Incomplete grades. According to university regulations, The instructor may assign the
incomplete grade when work is of passing quality but is incomplete for good cause.
Assigning an incomplete is at the discretion of the instructor, who is not obligated to do
2
so. See here for more details:
