GeoScene3D Newsletter, December 2013

by IGIS

It is with great pleasure we present our Christmas newsletter and a brand new release of
GeoScene3D, with many new exciting features. Among others are an extended support of
more data types including GeoSoft XYZ format, for well data and geophysical model data,
SEGY files for seismic data and a general extended support for tabular data for wells and
models. See the full lists of news and improvements last in this newsletter . More great news
is our new research project, ERGO, funded by The Danish National Advanced Technology
Foundation. The project aims at enabling the geologist to quickly build geological models in
very large areas with very dense data. This is achieved by combining geos tatistics and
geological knowledge in a new and ground breaking methodology developed at DTU Space.
The methodology will be especially well suited for geological interpretation of very large
Airborne EM surveys.

News from the R&D department

R&D Project: ERGO Effective High-Resolution Geological Modeling

Availability and access to clean water is a major problem in many parts of the world. An often overlooked
source for a stable supply of clean water is groundwater. Compared to other water resources, it takes a
relatively long time for groundwater aquifers to be replenished if over-exploited or polluted. This makes
proper management of the groundwater resource an important task for administrators and legislators. Instant
access to relevant, updated and accurate geological information is an essential instrument for this end.

Our project aims to combine expert geological knowledge with advanced software in a new tool that directly
assists the geologist in building an accurate geological model in a fast and efficient manner. It is our
intention, that by combining local geological expertise with hard data through geostatistics in this new
module, we will be able to help our geological colleagues in the geological mapping of the very large areas in
e.g. Thailand, India and other places, with vast areas and very large quantities of AEM data.

The Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation is funding the project with 940.000 Euros. The project
draws on knowledge from The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), The Geological Survey of Denmark and
Greenland (GEUS) and the Danish geological software provider, IGIS A/S.

R&D Project: Geological Modelling in Urban Areas

Urbanization, increasing rainfall due to global warming combined with larger cities makes it more pressing to
be able to generate, store and maintain updated, correct information about the underground beneath our
cities. In the planning of local disposal of water from extreme rain it is necessary to construct a detailed
geological model beneath the city, incorporating the special situation the urbane geological setting has. One
example is sewers, water pipelines, cables and utilities buried in sand, which acts as conduits for water and
contaminates. New features are being developed in GeoScene3D to enable incorporation of these urbane data
in the modelling process.

Handling suburban infrastructure, utility networks, roads, basements.

Visualizing 3D elements like basements and sewers buried in sand boxes on the geological profile

The VTU funded research project Development of a 3D geological/hydrogeological model, as base for the
urban waterflow cycle extends the functionality of the GeoScene3D software for these purposes. Tools for
visualization and incorporation of city specific data types like utilities, roads etc. in the building of the urban
geological model is being added to the software for release in the spring of 2014.

News from the Consultancy department

The geological consultants at IGIS are involved in different types of large- and small scale geological
modeling and data management. These projects are very important as we use them for constantly testing and
developing our software on real life projects. If you are interested in more information in this area please
contact Tom Pallesen, tmp@i-gis.dk.

Modelling Project: Voxel modelling in Tnder

IGIS has assisted GEUS (the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) in finishing a detailed voxel model
of the Tnder Area in the southern part of Denmark. Most of the quaternary sediments in the area are highly
glacial tectonically deformed and deeply incised buried valleys are found in many parts of the area as well.
Furthermore deep active faults related to the Tnder Graven impacts the sediments up to late quaternary.

Different modeling techniques have been used in different areas and depths of the area. The voxel model is
based on a layer model developed for the deeper layers (approx. 250 m) combined with geostatistical
methods used on the upper deformed part where traditional manual modeling was too time consuming. For
this part the SSV-method developed to handle electromagnetic data combined with borehole information has
been used in areas with SkyTEM data and multipoint statistics (SGeMS) has been used outside SkyTEM areas.

Modelling Project: Hydrogeological modelling in Aabenraa

Currently IGIS is working on a geological model for the municipality of Aabenraa (Aabenraa Kommune).
The model will be used for groundwater modeling. The purpose of the project is to point out areas where
extended protections of groundwater are important relative to the water supply in the future. The geological
model is predominantly based on existing geological models in the area. The project is based on cooperation
between Aabenraa Kommune, Grontmij and IGIS.

Highlights from New GeoScene3D Release 10.0 - Now Available

New Feature: GeoSoft XYZ File support for 1D models and wells.

by IGIS

GeoSoft is Oasis montajs export format. As a new feature 1D Geophysical models and wells can be imported
into GeoScene3D from GeoSoft ASCII XYZ files. In the 1D Model case, it is even possible to automatically
create profiles along flight lines in the import process.

Below is shown a part of a GeoSoft file containing 1D model information e.g. flight line, position info, layer
depths and layer resistivity etc.

The 1D models can be imported by clicking through a few pages in the Add Data Wizard. The key step is to
match the columns names in the GeoSoft file with 1D model properties which is done through a user friendly
interface, with preview of the results making it is easy to inspect if the chosen columns are correct.

A new and very useful feature for airborne methods, is that GeoScene3D can automatically set up profiles
along the flight lines. The Fligth line index, in this example the LINE column, is selected as Model Group.

The Import of GeoSoft XYZ files containing well layer data is also very easy. Again the Add Data Wizard is
used, and file columns is matched with well properties with preview of the final result.

A set of tutorials have been written, documenting the use of these new features. Se links in the end of the
newsletter.

New Feature: SEGY File support

It is now possible to import 2D SEGY files directly into GeoScene3D. The program extracts the positioning
from the trace header information and creates a new type of data specific profiles linked to the seismic data.
The vertical positioning is currently done manually, where you position the elevation of the top and bottom
og the seismic profile. The SEGY format have various revisions we currently support:

Supported Currently not supported

4-byte IBM Float rev 0 2 byte Fixed Point

4-byte IBM Float rev 1 4 byte Fixed point
2 -byte twos complement rev 1
4-byte twos complement rev 1
4-byte IEEE Float rev 1

As this new feature is brand new, we encourage our users to provide us with feed back on the functionality
and performance, which will help us in the further development. Please send information to Torben Bach,
tob@i-gis.dk.

Feature Update: Data transformations in Kriging

When working with contamination data you typically have a non Gaussian distribution of your data with a
large population of very low values, and a significant population of very large values. This kind of bimodal
distribution makes in necessary to make some kind of transformation before perfoming e.g. Kriging. It is now
possible to apply log transformation and normal score transformation when kriging your data. Read more
about the functionality in the tutorial linked at the end of the newsletter.

Feature Update: Extended support of tabular data for 1D models and wells

The Add Data Wizard has been further extended to support direct import of tabular data for 1D geophysical
models from e.g. TEM, AEM, Schlumberger, DC, PaTEM and for well data. This functionality is analog to the
new functions developed for supporting GeoSoft XYZ formats. See link to tutorial at the end of the
newsletter.

Feature Update: Extended Model Database Import

The import of data from the Danish Model Database has been extended in a number of ways. The import is
easily done using the Add Data Wizard. The new features are

Possibility to import point, surfaces, grids and profiles for a specific model type e.g. geological
model. Below is shown an import of a Geological model from Odense Vest in Denmark.
Ordering of point, surfaces, grids and profiles in groups in the Object Manager. The imported layers
are in the folder Layers_GeoModel etc.
Associated points and grids and layers are shown with the same color. All the yellow objects are
associated, meaning that Bund_Sand_3 points are gridded to the Bund_Sand_3 surface. And the
bottom surface of Sand 3 layer is Bund_Sand_3.
Furthermore it has become possible to import all grids or all points.
