Directions:

This is a research assignment. Use your textbook, web articles, and NAU library to conduct resear
when writing this paper.

Use APA style references and in-text- citations. You need to use at least 3 different resources
besides Castronova (2002), and Moore (2015).

Part 1. DISCOVERY LEARNING:

Download and read the following article:

Castronova, J. A. (2002). Discovery learning for the 21st century: What is it and how
does it compare to traditional learning in effectiveness in the 21st century. Action
Research Exchange, 1(1), 1-12. Retrived from

After reading this article and conducting additional research, answer to the following
questions.

What is discovery learning?

Discovery learning encompasses an instructional model and strategies that focus on active, hands-on learnin
opportunities for students (Dewey, 1916/1997; Piaget, 1954, 1973). exploring and problem solving to create
integrate, and generalize knowledge, 2) student driven, interest-based activities in which the student determi
the sequence and frequency, and 3) activities to encourage integration of new knowledge into the learners
existing knowledge base.

Moore (2014) also describes discovery learning as intentional learning through supervised problem solving
following the scientific method of investigation.
How does this form of teaching compare to traditional, teacher-centered instruction?

Papert (2000) states that the most fundamental differences are 1) learning is active rather than passive (Mosc
& Howard, 1997), 2) learning is process-oriented rather than content-oriented, 3) failure is important, 4)
feedback is necessary (Bonwell, 1998), and 5) understanding is deeper
In traditional, teacher centered instruction students are passive, they do not explore, solve to create and
integrate, activities are not student driven or internet based and students learn as much as teacher allows them
to learn.

In Discovery Learning the teacher's role has become that of facilitator for the observations, predictions and
conclusions of the students (Birse, 1996).
What educational theories support the discovery learning model?
John Dewey (1916/1997), Jean Piaget (1954, 1973), and Lev Vygotsky (Rice & Wilson, 1999) all developed
theories that serve as the foundation to discovery learning. These theories describe learning as active, proce
based, and collaborative.

"The constructivist approach to teaching science ... emphasizes the process through investigating rather than
the 'teaching of science'. How scientific answers are found is called the process of science and what is
discovered is known as the content" (Birse, 1996, p. 4). This new trend is to have students develop the skills
necessary to apply scientific information in experimental situations and draw conclusions based on their
observations and predictions.

What is the most important thing you discovered about discovery learning?

Students discovery and engagement is vitally important in education especially in language teaching. I a
Language teacher and and active language learner so I realize that students must discover, create, search
explore on their on rather than traditional teaching. It is obvious that in discovery learning kids get motiva
and learn more. Architecture of Discovery Learning part was the most important part that I discovered a
about discovery learning because these parts explain how the method can be applied to daily teachings.

How can you apply this method to your future classroom?

I can let my students search on the web and find out what they would like to learn in my class so that they ca
engage and get motivated by the topics they choose. I can design my lessons or create new ones according to
what they like to learn and discover.

Centers provide students with an opportunity take control of their own learning while exploring their intere
and needs in the language classroom even though the teacher is not directly instructing students rotating
through stations, centers must be organized around learning targets and predetermined skill sets
Curtain, H. A., & Dahlberg, C. A. (2015).

Centers can be another good way of applying this method. I can create temporary or permanent centers whe
students may work independently or with the teacher to discover, explore and learn the language.
Part 2. ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS
Select one of the following chapters to conduct research: Chapter 2, 3, 5 or 12. Revie
the chapter and respond to related questions for that chapter by conducting your ow
research.

Chapter 5- Using Classroom Technology

1. How does technology enhance the teachers ability to plan instruction? Use one of the available sear
engines to explore the web for technological tools such as lesson planning software, worksheets and
puzzle tools, poster and bulletin board production tools, and time management tools that will assist y
in planning. Share your findings with your class.
Technology is a great tool to enhance teachers ability to plan instruction, engage students and impro
learning. It is especially a very powerful tool to teach a language with available sources.
Duolingo is one of the online tools I use to engage my students and keep track of their progress onlin
It is an online language learning software that gives students flexibility to learn more than 80
languages. It is dynamic platform teaches the target languages but keeps students entertained so that
students do not get frustrated.
Another tool that helps me teaching my subject is quizziz. It is actually an online formative assessme
tool that enables teachers to take quick yet fun quizizz in minutes.

2. Technology offers tools that can help students learn. To what technology should students have access
Do you have any educational concerns about the use of these technologies in schools? If so, what are
they? If not, why not?
Technology provides endless opportunities for students to learn but at the same time it offers endless
destructions and harmful content too. Technology to be used effectively by teachers but very carefully to ma
sure it delivers effective and informative content to students. It should be limited so that students critical
ability improves,
I believe that so much of technology use in the classrooms hinders students abilities and other skills.
Technology use always to be monitored and very well planned so teachers may reach their goals.
