NUMBER 50

A road less traveled by BECKY BLAIR

REPORTER STAFF WRITER
Adam and Jill (Stumbo) Meeker were born and raised in Ogden, both
graduating in 2002 from OHS. They married in 2008 and, living in Min-
neapolis area, they pursued jobs of interest.
At some point their jobs of interest seemed less so - the result? Sell their
house and as many belongings as they could, and travel.
(As Adam wrote on their blog) For those of you who dont know, Jill
and I made the decision to sell our house, resign from our jobs and spend
some of the next year traveling. Everything that follows is our story. This
blog is not a brag board and we dont expect everyone to understand it.
This is simply another way for us to document our experiences and keep
our close friends and family updated.

In talking to the Meekers, a poem by Robert Frost came to mind - The

Road Not Taken. The words, being familiar to many describe the life jour-
ney of one man, coming to two roads, taking the one less traveled. Two
roads diverged in a yellow wood, - And sorry I could not travel both -
And being one traveler, long I stood -
And it ends - I shall be telling this with a sigh - Somewhere ages and
ages hence: - Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less
traveled by, - And that has made all the difference.

As any road is, there are challenges as well as high points:

As luck would have it, we picked the coldest day in 18 years in Min-
nesota to move. The actual high temperature was -20. Thankfully we
have some good friends who braved the elements to help us.
Everything fit in the storage unit, but Im not sure how. Despite numer-
ous trips to Goodwill and selling things on Craigs List we still ended up
with a full storage locker.
One of the goals of this experience is to simply our lives, but as you can
see we are still working on that.
On Thursday night after selling both of our cars I rented my neighbors
car and drove a load of things (including our most prized possession,
Tugg) to my parents. I was able to wrap up some loose ends and was
hoping to stay an extra night at home, but the weather had other ideas. I
left Friday night amidst inclement weather passing numerous accidents
and maintaining 45 mph through the entire state of Iowa. I finally ar-
rived in Minnesota an hour and a half later than I expected and when we
awoke Saturday, we discovered our flight had been moved back a day
and the wonderful Jarvis allowed us to stay with them another night.
Sunday was our lucky day, our flight to Bangkok went well and I was
able to squeeze in seven movies during the first leg to Tokyo. The second
leg we were upgraded to first class, which I highly recommend and went
right to bed for the next six hours.

I imagine a journey such as the Meekers had just undertaken would be

beyond what many of us consider our comfort zone. Their blog confirmed
those suspicions.
