10townsthatcameatthebo omofthe434surveyedare;Gonda(UP)ranked434followedbyBhusawal(Maharashtra),
Bagaha(Bihar)433,Hardoi(UP)432,Ka har(Bihar)431,Bahraich(UP)429,Muktsar(Punjab)427,Muktsar(Punjab)426andKhurja
(UP)425.
AnnouncingtheSurveyResults,ShriNaidudescribedMadhyaPradesh,Gujarat,JharkhandandCha sgarhfollowedby
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as the MoversandShakersfor having signicantly improved their rankings from that of the Survey
conductedin2014beforethelaunchofSwachhBharatMissioninOctober,2014.SwachhSurvekshanconductedin2016covered73
ci eswithovermillionpopula oneachbesidescapitalci es.
TheMinisterfurtherinformedthatinSwachhSurekshan2017,alltheci essurveyedinMadhyaPradeshandJharkhandhave
substan allyimprovedtheirrankingsoverthatof2016and2014.Gujaratdidsoinrespectofallci esexcep ngRajkotandsimilar
being the case in respect of Cha sgarh except Bilaspur. In Telangana, only two ci es have dropped in rankings this year while it
happenedinrespectoffourci esinAndhraPradesh.

ShriNaidustatedthatatotalof14StateswererepresentedintheTop50cleanci eswithGujarataccoun ngfor12,followed

Madhya Pradesh11, Andhra Pradesh8 and one each from Chandigarh, Cha sgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Sikkim and U ar
Pradesh.
25townsfromU arPradesharerankedamongthebo om50ci eswithfollowedbyRajasthanandPunjabwithveeach,
twoinMaharashtraandoneeachfromHaryana,KarnatakaandLashadweep.
Varanasihashowever,improveditsrankfrom418in2014to32thisyeartobecometheFastestBigCityMoverintheNorth
Zone.

TheMinistersaidthatUP,Bihar,Rajasthan,PunjabandKeralaneedtosubstan allystepupeortstoimprovesanita on
standardsinurbanareas.
FaridabadinHaryanahasimproveditsrankfrom379in2014to88thisyearandhasbeenawardedforbeingtheFastest
Moveramongci eswithapopula onofaboveonemillioneach.
ShriVenkaiahNaidustressedthatthisyearssurveyresultsareCi zensVerdictoncleanlinessinurbanareasofthecountry
with37lakhci zensenthusias callyprovidingfeedbackoncleanlinessin434ci esandtownsaccoun ngforabout60%ofthetotal
urbanpopula oninthecountry.Hestatedthatsuchsurveywillbecommissionedinallthe4,041statutorytownsandci es.

ShriNaidufurtherreferredtoIndiaimprovingitsposi onby12placesintheglobalTravelandTourismCompe veIndexand

feedbackfrommediapersonsasfurtherconrma onofimprovingsanita oninurbanareas.
ReferringtoMysuruinKarnatakawhichtoppedtheranksin2016and2014andrankedveinthisyearssurvey,ShriNaidu
assertedthatinnowayitmeantthatcleanlinesshasdeclinedinthecityorthecitygovernmentscaleddownitseorts.Heexplained
thatMysuruscoredover87%outofthetotalscoreof2,000inboth2017and2016indica ngthatsanita onlevelhasnotcomedown
thisyearwhileotherci eshavescoredoverMysuru.Thisspiritofcompe onissoughttobepromotedthroughsuchsurveystohelp
ci esknowwheretheystandinabsolutetermsandinrela ontootherci esaswellsaidtheMinister.
38ci eswereawardedincludingtheTopvecleanci esatthena onallevel,cleanestci esandfastestmoversindierent
zonesin510lakhand25lakhpopula oncategories.

inspec onofcleanlinessin434ci esandtownsandanother55forreal memonitoringofprogressofsurveyandeldinspec ons.
