3.1.1 Know, understand and be able to express examples of power relationships and
rivalries between European nations, as causes of the First World War (1860s to
1914).
Students will be asked to consider the 5 main powers that are relevant to
World War 1. They will be responsible for gathering up the information and
teaching it back to their peers using a 1 stay, 3 stray strategy.
The students have already learnt about imperialism, nationalism, militarism and
alliances, all four of these causes will be found within the information package that
they will be reading before doing their mini presentations.
Phase 1: Start the class off with a recap of the four M-A-I-N causes of WW1.

Phase 2: Separate the students into 5 different groups, each group will be
responsible for covering their respective country and then teach it back to
their peers. The activity will be set up at a 1 stay, 3 stray (5mins)
Phase 3: The handouts will be given to the students, they will spend 10-15
mins learning their information and preparing the student that will stay
behind in order to teach his peers. (10-15 mins)
Phase 4: Students will rotate throughout the class and learn about the other
powers, they will be responsible for filling out the sheet that they were
handed in at the start of the class. (5x5 mins) (25)
Phase 5: Students will return to their original group and explain the
information back to their peer that stayed behind. (5mins)
Phase 6: After the activity, students will be given time to work on their Essay
that is due the following Monday. They can use this time to conference with
the teacher and make sure they are on the right path.
