All Praise is due to Almighty Allah, Durood and Salaams upon the most
blessed and exalted in Allahs creation, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah and upon his
illustrious family and companions, and upon all those on the path of
righteousness.
By the Grace of Allah, the Mercy of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah and the Karam
of Ghaus o Khaja Raza, and my Mashaikh especially Huzoor Taajush Shariah,
Huzoor Muhaddith Kabeer and Huzoor Syed Shah Turabul Haq (Alaihir
Rahma), you have another booklet before you which has been compiled from
our Food For Thought Series, with some additions. This booklet briefly
discusses the Awliyah and their excellence and is titled, The Awliyah Allah.
It is my humble Dua that this booklet will be a means of benefit for all those
who read it. I would like to thank all those who assisted in proofing this
document and making other valuable suggestions and those who assisted in
any other way, so as to make this publication a success. I pray that Allah
rewards you all with the best of rewards. Aameen.

Allahs Name (we) begin with, The Compassionate Most Merciful
Now, if we look at the above meaning of the word Wilaayat, and then look
at a Wali in the context of the meaning of this word, as mentioned in the
dictionaries, then we will understand that a Wali is one who is close to
Allah and one who is a friend of Allah and who loves Him dearly.
It also shows that a Wali is one, who has the special help and support
from Allah, and whom Allah has chosen to be His beloved friend, and a
Wali. Due to his special closeness to Almighty Allah, he has been blessed
with special abilities and capabilities which are foreign to those who have
not reached this level of excellence and closeness.
4
In Light of The Shariah
A Wali is one who is the Aarif (one with special knowledge) of the Zaat
Being and Sifaat Attributes of Almighty Allah, to the best of his ability.
He is one who is steadfast and continuously striving in his obedience to
Almighty Allah. He abstains from major sins, and he contentedly stays
away from minor sins. He also abstains from being deeply engrossed in
that, which is permitted, but which will cause him to be absorbed in its
pleasures. [Footnotes of Sharh Aqaaid Page 295]
In every era, the people have had a close connection to the Awliyah Allah
(Beloveds of Allah), and it is this connection which helped them to attain
closeness in the Court of Allah and His Beloved Rasool .
However, there are some today who mislead the Muslims with false
claims of Wilaayat. We should be wary of these false claimants of
Wilaayat. Below is an important discussion on Wilaayat.
5
Wilaayat cannot be acquired by self-effort, Almighty Allah bestows it.
However, good deeds and virtuous behaviour are a means of allowing it to
be bestowed. Some blessed personalities are blessed with this privilege in
advance.
The greatest Awliyah from the beginning until the last day, are those in
the Ummat of the Beloved Rasool . The greatest amongst them are the
four Khulafa in order of excellence. The first being Hazrat Abu Bakr, then
Hazrat Umar, followed by Hazrat Uthman and Hazrat Ali (Allah is pleased
with them all).
It is for this reason that all the Awliyah Allah turn towards Hazrat Maula
Ali and they shall continue to acquire this blessing through him.
6
Who is A Wali?
The Awliyah Allah have been granted a great and blessed excellence in
the court of Almighty Allah. It is mentioned concerning the Awliyah Allah
in the Holy Quran:
The word Wali is from Wila which means closeness and success. A Wali-
Allah is one who attains closeness to Allah by virtue of his Faraaid (i.e.
obligatory actions), and one who remains absorbed in obeying Almighty
Allah, and his heart should be saturated in the Noor of the Jalaal of The
Creator.
He is never exhausted by the Dhikr of Allah, and with the eyes of his
heart, he does not look to anyone else but his Creator. These are the
attributes of the Awliyah. When a servant (of Allah) reaches this
condition, then Allah becomes his Guardian, his True Helper.
Hazrat Ibn Abbas said that a Wali is one that when you look at him,
you remember Almighty Allah. The same is mentioned in the Hadith of
Tabri as well.
Ibn Zaid has said that, A Wali is only that person in whom those qualities
" % In
are evident, which have been mentioned in this verse
other words, he possesses both, true Imaan and Taqwa (piety).
8
Some of the Noble Ulama have mentioned that a Wali is that person, who
loves only for the sake of Allah. This trait of the Awliyah has been
mentioned in many Ahadith.
Some of the Akaabireen have mentioned that, a Wali is one who aspires to
attain closeness to Allah by striving in His obedience. Allah assists them
by granting them the power of miraculous abilities. The (Awliyah) are
those who have become Waqf (i.e. they have surrendered themselves) to
fulfil Allahs Right to be worshipped, and to be compassionate towards the
creation.
Even though the phrases and texts (on this discussion) are individual
ones, none of them have any dissimilarity in them, because in every text,
at least one of the traits of a Wali have been explained; for the one who
attains closeness to Allah, is adorned with all these qualities. In the levels
and stations of Wilaayat, each one of them, according to his level or
station, has a special distinction and nobility. [Khazain ul Irfan]
9
Their Excellence
Indeed there are certain servants of Allah who are neither Nabis nor are
they Shaheeds, but on the day of Qiyaamat, they will receive such
excellence from Allah, that even the Ambia and Shuhada will admire
them. A person said Ya RasoolAllah please inform us about their
accomplishments so that we too should love them. He said, these are
those who without having any relation or any monetary ties to people,
will love them solely for the pleasure of Allah. By Allah! Their faces will be
glowing, and they shall be seated on Mimbars (pulpits) of Light. When the
people will be arrested in fear, they shall be fearless; and when the people
will be overcome with grief, they shall have no grief. Thereafter,
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah recited the verse:
Hazrat Abu Saeed reports that Huzoor was asked, who are the
Awliyah Allah? He said, the Awliyah Allah are those whom when you
see them, you remember Allah.
10
Some Signs of A Wali
From amongst the signs of a Wali, it has been mentioned, He is one who
is steadfast and continuously striving in his obedience to Almighty Allah
and His Beloved Rasool .
This sign of Wilaayat is such an important and essential quality that some
of the pious predecessors have used this alone to explain the meaning of
who a Wali is. It is for this reason that Imam e Qushairi in his world
renowned Risaala Qushairiyah states the following when explaining who
a Wali is. He says,
11
The Power of the Awliyah
The Awliyah have been blessed with great power and authority from the
Court of Allah. They are the true Representatives of the Beloved Rasool
. They have been bestowed with knowledge of Ghaib (unseen) through
the blessing of Nabi Kareem .
Most of them are aware of past and future happenings and are even aware
of that which is inscribed on the Lauh-e-Mahfuz, The Protected Tablet.
All this is bestowed upon them through the blessing of Nabi Kareem .
It must be understood that without the blessing of Nabi Kareem no
non-Nabi can attain any knowledge of the unseen.
The Karaamaat (miracles) performed by the Awliyah Allah are Haq (True).
One who opposes this is a misguided person.
To have the ability to bring the dead back to life, to cure the leper, to
cause the blind to see, to travel the entire earth from East to West in just
one small step and all other like splendours are within the power of the
Awliyah Allah, except for that which is unique and not possible.
12
The Awliyah are our Helpers
This is our way and has been the way of the pious predecessors as we will
prove below.
It has been narrated by Hazrat Abdullah bin Masud that the Beloved
Nabi has said, When the animal, etc. of any person flees into the
woods,
, - . , - . , - .
He should say, O servants of Allah help me! O servants of Allah help me! O
servants of Allah help me! [Hisn Haseen Pg.163]
13
Hazrat Allama Jalaaluddeen Suyuti has quoted a Hadith with reference
to Tabrani Shareef on the authority of Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar that
Nabi Kareem said,
, < ; ,02 /
There are some Special servants of Allah who have been appointed to
fulfil the needs of the people. People will call to them in their times of
need. They are protected from the punishment of Almighty Allah. [Jaami
us Sagheer Pg.78 Vol.1]
It disappeared although there was no way for it to exit the room. He gave
the other sandal to his disciple and asked him to keep it until the first one
returned. After some time a certain person from Syria arrived with the
sandal and some money as gifts and said, May Almighty Allah reward
you for this.
14
The man then said, Once when a thief sat on my chest and was about to
slaughter me, in my heart I said, Ya Sayyidi Muhammad Ya Hanafi then
suddenly this sandal appeared and struck the thief on his chest with such
force that he became dazed and collapsed, and Almighty Allah saved me
through your blessing. [Tabaqaat ul Kubra Pg.95 Vol.2]
It is the way of the Ahlus Sunnah that we love all the Awliyah Allah and
we regard Huzoor Ghaus e Azam as, The King of The Awliyah.
Hazrat Allama Abdul Wahab Sharaani when explaining the status and
significance of Hazrat Musa Abu Imran states:
When any of his mureeds would call out to him from anywhere, he
would answer them even if he was a years distance away or even more
than that. [Tabaqaat ul Kubra Pg.29 Vol.2]
15
He says, I am the one who comforts my disciple in his difficult times
when the world breaks unto him. If you are in any discomfort, scarcity or
grief, then call out to me with the words Ya Zaruq, and I will present
myself. [Bustaan ul Muhadditheen]
Remember! If you love Ghaus e Paak , stay away from the deviants, for
this was the teaching of Huzoor Ghaus e Azam , and it is the teaching of
all the Awliyah Allah.
16
Tariqat is not separate from Shariat
There are some so-called claimants of Wilaayat who try to confuse the
ordinary Muslims by telling them that Tariqat (i.e. the path of acting
upon the Shariat) is separate from Shariat, and that there is no need for
Shariat once you enter Tariqat. This is totally false and misleading. Such
people want to do things to suit their Nafs. Tariqat is not conflicting to
Shariat. In reality, it is inseparable from the Shariat. Some so-called Sufis
say that Shariat and Tariqat are two separate ways and distant from each
other, this is incorrect. To regard oneself independent and free from the
need to adhere to the Shariat on the basis of this baseless view leads to
infidelity and heresy.
Nowadays, there are many self-proclaimed Walis, but their actions and
their ways are contrary to many commands of the Shariat e Mustafa ,
In this time there are also those corrupt and deviant ones who use the
name of Sufism to fool the unsuspecting Muslims. Corrupt deviants like
the present day Tahir Minhaji claims that no Sufi ever called anyone an
unbeliever and no Sufi ever made any Muslim a kaafir or called anyone a
Murtad. This is his lack of knowledge and his open ignorance.
17
Tahir Minhaji and those like him claim that the Molvis referring to the
Ulama are the ones who do this and cause a split in the Ummah (Allah
Forbid). Such ignorant people need to read the Quran and the Hadith of
Rasoolullah . They need to go back to the works of the Pious, and they
will realise that the real and the true Sufis are the Ulama, and not
ignorant fame seeking deviants, who are trying to use the label of Sufism
to spread Sulah-kulliyat. Allah Protect us from such deviants who are
falsely masquerading as Sufis.
They are true in what they say. They have reached, but where? They
have reached hell.
The Majzoob (one who is in a completely deep spiritual state, truly having
no control over his senses) are however given some exemptions due to
their condition, like the condition of someone who is in an unconscious
state, then the law of Shariah will be held back in their case. However, it
must be noted that if one is truly a Majzoob, he will not speak contrary to
the Shariah.
18
Beacons of Guidance
When in distress, to call out to the Awliyah Allah from great distances and
proximity has been the manner of the pious predecessors.
We believe that the Awliyah Allah are always alive in their graves. Their
knowledge, recognition and their power of vision and sight increase after
passing into the next world.
These sacred offerings are very different from the offerings made to kings
etc. The Niyaz of Gyarwee Shareef is very beneficial and blessed. To
commemorate the Urs of the Awliyah Allah by reciting the Holy Quran,
Naats, Faateha and delivering talks, etc. are all permissible. Actions
contrary to the Shariah are disallowed, so they are disallowed to a greater
degree at a Mazaar Shareef.
19
The Awliyah through The Eyes of The Awliyah
Many people ask about the characteristics of the Awliyah, and Alhamdu
Lillah I think we have discussed this already in the inception of this Book.
However, I will share with you here some statements of the Awliyah,
about the characteristics of the Awliyah, in other words, See the Awliyah
through the eyes of the Awliyah.
A Wali does not ask (for assistance for his personal needs) with his
tongue. His humility and his humble actions speak for what he requires.
Hazrat Sahl bin Abdullah Tastari Alaihir Rahma says, A Wali is one whose
actions are continuously in accordance with the Shariat.
Neither does a Wali behave boastfully (i.e. he does not show off) and nor
does he behave with hypocrisy.
20
Once again, a word of caution, that we should always be aware of those
fake self-proclaimed Walis who neither perform Namaaz in its appointed
time nor do they command their followers to do so. They boast about
their so-called excellence, and their words have the foul odour of
hypocrisy, as they befriend those who are in reality the enemies of the
true Awliyah. Always Remember! Such people are not Awliyah Allah but
are simply charlatans trying to dupe those who go to them.
May Allah protect us from the deceit of the Wahabis and all bud-mazhabs
and keep us true and sincere in the love of the Awliyah.
21
Ghaflat us Saaliheen
This is a very elevated spiritual level which certain Awliyah reach. In this
spiritual condition, they do not care about any worldly things but are
completely absorbed in the love of Allah and all that which will afford
them a greater closeness to Allah. For the true servants of Allah, this is
such an elevated level of Ruhaniyah (spiritualism), that on reaching this
level they have even no memory of the existence of the materialistic and
worldly entities, and none of these entities means anything to them.
While in this condition, they remain deeply engrossed in the love of Allah,
absorbing themselves deeper and deeper into this shoreless sea of love.
While in this condition, they are at times in the state of Sukr (a very
deep spiritual condition) and sometimes in the state of Qaal (normal
state), and then at times they enter the state of Haal (true spiritual
ecstasy).
You will find that even though these Beloveds of Allah reach such great
levels of spiritual excellence, they never regard themselves exempt from
the Commands of the Shariah. As soon as the times to fulfil the
obligations appear, they immediately come out of this deep spiritual state
and fulfil their obligations as per the Shariah. An excellent example to
understand this is the condition of Hazrat Sufyan Thawri .
22
The Great Muhaddith of his era, Hazrat Sufyan Thawri once entered
into a very deep spiritual condition for a very long time, and could
sometimes be heard loudly chanting the name of Allah while in this
condition.
23
The scholars have also mentioned that this state of Ghaflat us Saaliheen is
one which many great Narrators of Hadith had also entered. Concerning
some of these great narrators, it is mentioned that,
During the latter days of their lives, the condition of Ghaflat us Saaliheen
could be seen in them.
In other words, they would enter into an exalted and deep state of
devoutness and piety. This sign of being uninterested in worldly and
materialist entities is another great sign of Wilaayat.
24
Levels of Excellence
He says, There are never more or less than eight in every era. It is
through their (deep Spiritual) condition only that the signs of acceptance
are evident, although it is not necessary from these signs, that they
should have control of this (deep spiritual) condition as well. In fact, this
(deep spiritual) condition shrouds them, and only those personalities who
have reached a higher spiritual level than them, can understand this
condition of theirs. Those who have not reached such a level of spiritual
excellence are unable to understand the condition into which they have
entered.
25
A Blessed Moment for a Servant
A very blessed and special moment in the life of a true servant of Allah,
and his spiritual ascension is when by the grace of Allah, he is blessed
with the matchless gift, when his Rub affords him the honour of being
counted amongst His Beloveds, in other words, when he is chosen to be
from amongst the Awliyah Allah.
In other words, indeed he was already absorbed in love for Allah and His
Beloved Rasool at a very young age, but when he witnessed this
amazing happening, then he too knew that he was blessed with Wilaayat
and was amongst the special servants of Allah.
26
The World comes to his Feet
The great mystics have said that this level of spiritual excellence, in
which a true servant of Allah loves his Rub, and then Almighty Allah
informs him, that Allah loves him, is known as Mahbubiyat.
When this happens, Almighty Allah sends his pure hearted servants and
those who understand the Maqaam of the Awliyah to humble themselves
before such a blessed and special personality, and it seems like the world
has come as beggars at their feet.
&
Verily (for) those who Believed and performed virtuous deeds; it is near
that The Most Compassionate will inspire love for them. [Surah Maryam
(19) Verse 96]
While explaining this verse of the Holy Quran, Khalifa e Aala Hazrat
Sadrul Afaadil Hazrat Allama Sayed Naeemuddeen Muradabadi Alaihir
Rahma mentions in Khazain ul Irfan:
In other words, Allah will make them His Beloveds, and He will instil and
inspire their love, into the hearts of the servants.
27
Sadrul Afaadil then mentions,
This shows the general acceptance and prominence of the pious believers
and the Awliyah e Kaamileen is proof of their Mahbubiyat, such as the
grand prominence and acceptance of Huzoor Ghaus e Azam , Hazrat
Khaja Ghareeb Nawaaz , Hazrat Mahbub e Ilaahi Sayyidi Sultan
Nizamuddeen Awliyah , Hazrat Sayed Ashraf Jahangir Makhdoom e
Samnani , Huzoor Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan ,
Ghaus ul Waqt Huzoor Mufti e Azam Hind and all the Awliyah Allah.
Also, in this time the special prominence which has been afforded to
Huzoor Sayyidi Taajush Shariah Allama Mufti Mohammed Akhtar Raza
Khan Qaadiri and to Huzoor Sayyidi Muhaddith e Kabeer Allama Zia ul
Mustafa Qaadiri Amjadi.

Note of Caution
29
The Special Vision of The Awliyah
C H 2
Fear the sight of a true believer for he sees with the Noor of Almighty
Allah. [Jaame Tirmizi Pg.140 Vol.2]
How blessed are these true and beloved servants of Allah who have been
blessed with such excellence in this world that they can see with the Noor
of Allah!
Undoubtedly, their eyes and hearts are filled with Noor, and they can
observe that which our weak eyes are unable to see. These are the blessed
and beloved servants of Allah that even though they may not be able to
see physically or if they have lost their physical vision, they are still able
to see much better than those of us with sharp and powerful vision. How
is this so? It is simple to understand for those who have been blessed with
the love of the beloveds.
They can see the secrets of the unseen world and so powerful are their
sights that they can see centuries ahead. This is why it is very important
that we should be cautious of the sight of a true believer. When sitting in
their company, our hearts should be in order. These are those beloved
servants that cannot be fooled by the fake outer appearance of
30
pretentious people, but they are those who after lowering their heads and
closing their eyes, can look into our hearts, while they observe our
conditions on the Protected Tablet.
May the sights of the Awliyah fall upon our hearts, allowing our hearts to
be cleansed so that we too may see in it the manifestations of the Noor of
Allah and His beloved Nabi .
N TU C. ,W C
(Almighty Allah) informs (the Wali Allah) from His unseen knowledge to
the extent that the (knowledge) of every tree that grows and every leaf
that becomes green is before his sight.
31
Keeping the Company of The Pious
It is of great importance to keep the company of the pious and shun the
company of the evil and notorious ones. This is even more important in
this time of strife.
The wise words of Hazrat Sultan ul Hind, Khaja Ghareeb Nawaaz on the
importance of keeping the company of the righteous seems most
appropriate in this discussion. Once during the Majlis of Sultan ul Hind
a discussion concerning keeping the company of the pious, was in
progress and Huzoor Khaja e Paak said:
32
Huzoor Khaja e Paak then said, if a bad (sinful) person keeps the
company of the pious people for some time, then their company will
surely have some positive effect on him, and he will become good. And if
a pious (good) person sits in the company of the corrupt, then their
companionship will definitely have a negative effect on him, and he will
become corrupt.
Sultan ul Hind then said, it has been mentioned in Sulook that, the
companionship of the pious and virtuous servants is better than virtuous
acts, and the company of a bad (sinful) person is worse than committing
wrong actions.
Read the words of Huzoor Sultan ul Hind many times over, so that his
wise and blessed words may become embedded in our hearts, and
thereafter look at the teachings of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat
Ash Shah Imam Ahmed Raza Khan and you would realise that Huzoor
Aala Hazrat was actually passing on to us the wise words and the
important message of Huzoor Khaja Ghareeb Nawaaz .
All his life Aala Hazrat advised the Proper and True Sunnis to stay away
from the deviants and the corrupt, just as Huzoor Sultan ul Hind had
33
commanded in his Ruhani gatherings, when he explained how
detrimental it was to keep the company of the evil and corrupt people.
After looking at the above advice of Sarkaar e Khaja e Paak , one will
have no doubt that Sarkaar e Aala Hazrat is indeed the true propagator
of the Message of Sufism, and the true protector of the teachings of Sultan
ul Hind Hazrat Khaja Mueenuddeen Chishti Ajmeri .
This path of Maslak e Aala Hazrat is indeed the path of the Pious
Predecessors, which Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza spiritually mapped
for the safety of our Imaan and Aqaaid. This modern era brings with it
many challenges for the Ummah, and at times we feel lost and unsure of
what to do and which direction to take.
Always remember that in every era, none can map a better path for you,
than the one who is the most knowledgeable and most wise and blessed in
that era, and one who has been appointed by the Will of Allah as the
Mujaddid of that Era. Undoubtedly, Aala Hazrat Azeem ul Barkat the
Mujaddid of the Era, was the most qualified to map the true path for us
by the guidance of his Pious Predecessors. Hence, it is our responsibility
to follow this path meticulously, in order to keep our Imaan safe. Again I
re-iterate that we should abstain from those who intentionally attempt to
divert from the teachings of the Great Mujaddid.
34
Enmity with Awliyah
The first type of people are those deviants who have enmity with the
Awliyah Allah, and they forbid the Muslims from visiting their Mazaars
(Holy Graves) and from taking their blessings.
The second type of people are sadly those who claim to be Sunnis but
they slander the Awliyah and the Ulama e Haq.
Such people should realise that enmity with any Wali is a poison that will
destroy their entire existence. It will erode their faith and cause them to
fall into the pit of strife and calamity.

Indeed Almighty Allah has said: Whosoever shows enmity to My Wali
(Beloved), I have declared war against him. And My (beloved) servant
does not become close to Me with anything (which is) more beloved to Me
than the Duties (of Deen) which I have made an obligation upon him. And
My servant continues to become closer to Me, by way of (his) Nafil
(optional) deeds until I Love him (i.e. he becomes My Beloved). When I
Love him, I am his power of hearing with which he hears, and (I am) his
sight through which he sees, and his hand with which he strikes, and his
foot with which he walks. If he has to ask (for anything) from Me, I would
assuredly give it to him; and if he sought refuge with Me, I would surely
grant him refuge.
