Worldwide Wind Capacity to reach 500 GW mark by the end of the year
- 21 GW of new installations in the first half of 2016, same as is the previous year
- Worldwide wind capacity has reached 456 GW, expected to reach 500 GW by the end of the year
- Germany, India and Brazil leading in market growth in H1 2016

The worldwide wind capacity reached 456486 MW Total Installed Capacity 2012-2016 [MW]
by the end of June 2016, out of which 21714 MW were

Top Wind Markets 2016: Germany, India and Brazil

Still the five traditional wind countries, China, USA, Germany, India and Spain, represent together a share of 67 % of
the global wind capacity; nevertheless it has shrunk from 73 % by the end of June 2013. In terms of new capacity, USA
and Spain played hardly a role, as they represent less than 4 % of the market for new turbines, while Germany and India
showed an increase in the number of new installations and the Chinese installations were similar to the previous year. In
total, the Big Fives share in new capacity accounts for 72 %.
In total, four countries installed more than 1 GW in the first half of 2016: China (10 GW of new capacity), the India (2,4
GW), Germany (2,4 GW) and Brazil (1,1 GW).
The top 15 wind countries show a diverse picture in the first half of 2016: half of the markets performed stronger than in
2015: Germany, India, France, Brazil, Italy, Sweden and Poland.

Developments by Region
The 10 largest markets for new wind turbines included
next to China, Germany, India, and Brazil: USA (830 MW),
France (568 MW), Turkey (428 MW), UK (320 MW), and
Sweden (309 MW). Brazil surpassed Italy and became the
9th largest market with 1095 MW added in the first half of
the year.
Europe
Europe continued reducing its share of the global
installed capacity accounting 33% by the end of June 2016.
The European markets showed a similar picture than in the
first half of 2015: Germany, France and Italy increased for
the second year in a row their new installations. The UK
saw a dramatic decreased, 320 MW after 872 MW in the
first half of 2015.
Germany is still the unchallenged number one wind
market in Europe, with a new capacity of 2,4 GW and a total of 47,4 GW. A record number of installations is expected in
Germany for the second half and for the complete year 2016 as a new auctions system will be introduced in 2017 which is
expected to lead to a slump of the German market in the coming years. Spain and Portugal markets are still in stand with
0 and 6 MW installed respectively.
Asia: Dominated by China and India
Again in 2016, China has been by far the largest single wind market, adding 10 GW in six months, almost the same like
in the previous year, when 10,1 GW were erected. China accounted for 46 % of the world market for new wind turbines. By
June 2016, China had an overall installed capacity of 158 GW. India added a record 2,4 GW, almost the double of what
was erected in the first half of 2015, when it installed 1,3 GW.
The Japanese and the Korean wind markets are still growing at very modest rates, with both countries showing growth
rates of 3,3 % and 7,5% respectively.
North America
The US market had a difficult half year after a record first quarter; adding 520 MW between January and March and only
310 MW during April and June, 1991 MW were installed during the first half a year ago. However, following the extension
of the Production Tax Credit at the end of 2015, there are over 12,5 GW of wind power under construction .
Canada installed 109 MW during the first half of 2016, only 20 % of the installed in the previous period of 2015.
Latin America
The biggest Latin American market and now on 9th position worldwide, Brazil, installed 1,1 GW in first half of 2016 and
reached a total capacity of 9810 MW, with a growth rate of 12,5 %. Brazil is expected to continue as the lead market in the
region and could reach the 6th position worldwide before 2018.
