Balfanz, R. (2016). Missing school matters. Phi Delta Kappan, 98(2), 8-13.

This article written by Balfanz was written in 2016. In the article, Balfanz talks about

chronic absences in public school. Chronically absent means that students have missed

10% or more days of school. In the recent survey, it says that over 6.5 students who

attend public school are chronically absent. This absence in school may lead to failure in

a class, or undesired grades. I think that this article will be helpful to me in my research

paper because it discusses about public school students and their attendance. This can be

a good reason on why public school students are less successful than private school

students.

Cheema, J. (2015). The private-public literacy divide amid educational reform in Qatar: What

does PISA tell us? International Review of Education, 61(2), 173-189.

This is an article from a journal, and it was written by Cheema in 2015. In the article,

Cheema focuses on how the implementation of the government supported independent

public schools compete against private schools in Qatar education system. The

independent public school would allow the schools to make the decisions about

teachers, curriculum, spending, and text books. This study was meant to show if

independent public school would make a difference in the students test scores. At the end

of this article, they found out that private schools were more dominant in math, science

and reading even though they implemented the independent public school program. I
think that this article could be useful because it compares the significant differences of

academics in private and public schools.

Chen, G. (2013). 10 Advantages to Public Education. Public School Review. Retrieved from

https://www.publicschoolreview.com/blog/10-advantages-to-public-education

This is a non periodical article written by Chen in 2013. This article focuses on the

positive aspects of going to public school. These positive aspects of public school include

no cost, diversity, availability, class sizes, and other academic opportunities. Also, public

schools have accountability because they are government run. These public schools are

accredited by other agencies to make sure that the students education meets the national

standards. I think that this is a great article. It focuses on the positive sides of public

schools rather than the negative. This could also make a great counter argument against

private school.

Duncan, K., & Sandy, J. (2007). Explaining the performance gap between public and private

school students. Eastern Economic Journal, 33(2), 177-191.

This article was written by Duncan and Sandy in 2007. This article discusses what

factors contribute to the performance gap between public and private schools. Some of

these factors include family and school. Because not every family prioritizes school, then

there is less motivation for students to excel in their academics. Also, students from

broken homes may not do as well because of a lack of a role model. The environment of

a school also plays a factor as to why students dont succeed as well as private school

students do. I think this article would be very useful for my paper. It talks about the

ways public and private school academics are different, so it is important to my paper.
Ikpa,V. (2016). Politics, Adequacy, and Education Funding. Education, 136(4), 468-472.

This article was written by Ikpa in 2016. In this article, Ikpa focuses on the research of

the government and its contributions to the public school. In addition, it also discusses

about how the government makes its decisions on how much money they give to public

schools. Also in the article, it says that if there is a lack of money in the budget, then

there might not be a quality in the students education. This lack of a good education

could lead students to no knowledge acquired in a certain class, or lack of good teachers.

I think this article could be useful because it shows how the public school could be

affected by the government. On the other hand, private school is in control of the budget

since parents pay for their students tuition.

Kapos, S. (2009). Sorry, kids: its public school now. Crains Chicago Business, 32(32), 59-61.

This article was written by Kapos in 2009. In this article, Kapos is talking about how

private school has gotten too expensive. The article follows the life of a family who is

sending their kids to public school for the first time. Furthermore, he states that tuition in

private school has gone up, so public school is the best alternative. Public school is

different from private because there are much more people in public schools. Not

everyone can get into private schools because of money, so there would be more kids in

public schools. I think this article can be very useful because it talks about the down

sides of private schools.

Lynch, D. (2014). Why Does the Public Hate Us. Educational Leadership, 71(5), 48-52.

This article was written by Lynch in 2014. In the article, Lynch talks about the teachers

point of view on the public school system in Chicago. Futhermore, Lynch conducted a

survey for the teachers in multiple Chicago public schools. The results of this survey

concluded that the teachers in the public schools had low morale, and they were being

unappreciated by the community. These teachers were being blamed for the failures of

students, but it isnt completely their fault. Some students in the Chicago public schools

come from broken families, poverty, and lack of a good role model. Because students

bring these problems into schools, it is hard to know how to handle them. I think this

article could be used as a main point as to why public school students are less successful

in school than private school students.

Nathan, J. (1989). More public school choice can mean more learning. Educational Leadership,

47(2), 51-54.

This article was written by Nathan in 1989. In the article, Nathan discusses some

alternative ways students can benefit more in the public school system. Furthermore in

the article, he explains that parents should be able to choose their childs public school

plan. These plans for public school can include specialty school, program development,

open enrollment, and post secondary options. These plans allow students to gain access

to upper division classes through government and state funds. I think this article will be

useful because it can be a solution to the public school problem. If a student has a desire

to learn, then these programs can help that student achieve their goal in public school.
Thapa, A. (2015). Public and private school performance in Nepal: an analysis using SLC

examination. Education Economics, 23(1), 47-62.

This article, written in 2015, discusses the academic performance of students in private

and public schools in Nepal. Thapa collected test data from students using the School

Leaving Certificate exam. This test was meant to see what the students have learned

throughout their school career. It showed that private school students learned more and

scored higher on these tests. Also in the article, it states that public schools have very

little infrastructure and low educational levels. This article is helpful because it goes in

depth on how private school education is better than that of a public school.

Waylock, C. (2015). Private School Pros. Atlanta, 55(7), 128-130.

In this article, Waylock discusses the advantages of education in private school. This

article was written in 2015 and it talks about private school in Atlanta Georgia.

Furthermore in the article, the author talks about how private school out performs public

school in all aspects of academics. Private school students are better at taking state

assessment tests, advanced placement tests, and college entrance exams. In addition, if

you go to private school, then the more likely you are to graduate. This is very helpful

for my paper because it discusses the benefits of private school compared to public

school.
