Annotated Bibliography for Childhood Hunger

Matheson, Hilary. "Local Schools Lead Fight against Childhood Hunger." Shibboleth
Authentication Request. N.p., 11 May 2015. Web. 09 May 2017.
Local Schools Lead Fight against Childhood Hunger is an article written by Hilary Matheson.
This is the first article that I have read that talks about doing something about childhood hunger
instead of just talking about the effects of it. Many schools participated in events to fight
childhood hunger and raise awareness about it. One of the events was an essay that the students
could write to raise money for their school. There were also food drives held as well as donations
to the local food banks. Talks were given throughout the Fight Childhood Hunger week to
raise awareness not only for the children, but for the adults as well.
I chose this article for various reasons. This was the first article that caught my eye because it
said something about fighting the problem. Also, the fact that it a story that was covered by the
news made me want to choose this as well. Most things covered by the news are rather important
and real. The material was unique because it had a child involved in the story as well. The child
that one the essay contest made a huge impact on the school that she goes to and did a great thing
for the other students there. This article can also give ideas to other schools if they read it. The
awareness provided by the school plus the coverage by the news outlet can make even more
people aware. I was not aware that there was a Fight Childhood Hunger week until I read this
article.
Shah, Nirvi. "Hunger in Our Schools." Editorial Projects in Education, 2 May 2011. Web. 2 May
2017.
Hunger in Our Schools by Nirvi shah is an article that explores what teachers see every day in
schools when it comes to hunger. It states that, about 65 percent of K-8 teachers say children in
their classrooms regularly come to school hungry. This is an astonishing realization and I do
believe that more people need to be aware of this fact. The writer also talks about a survey that
was done that showed that teachers believe hunger in the classroom a bigger problem than it was
a year earlier. This survey shows that even though our economy may be getting slightly better,
the hunger in America is not. Something needs to be done about this and everyone needs to be
aware of the problem, not just teachers. Many of the teachers are trying to make a change by
signing the students up for free meals or even going as far as buying food for their classrooms
with their own money.
I enjoyed the material and facts given by this article. If it were longer than it was, I wouldve
enjoyed it even more. The simple fact that the writer thought to go and ask teachers about this
topic is good. Not too many people would think to go to that source. It shows that they are aware
of the topic and who children are most affected by and who probably sees them the most. Based
on the facts that were stated, I can tell that this is a real article regardless. My mother is a teacher
and the facts are words that she would say about her students. Also, the writer only chose to deal
with the teachers when writing this article. Which can either be a good or bad thing. There are so
many different aspects to look at when it comes to childhood hunger and I feel that this article
pointed out one of the biggest ones.
Aiken, Bob. "SNAP Challenge Begins to Take Its Toll." The Huffington Post.
TheHuffingtonPost.com, 19 Sept. 2013. Web. 01 May 2017.
This article SNAP Challenge Begins to Take Its Toll is about a study done by Bob Aiken that
involves challenging himself to living like a child that lives on the government funded program
SNAP. He could only buy as many food items as the money allowed him and could not buy any
extra items if he ran out. As well as, if he forgot his food, he would have to take a trip back to get
it or starve. The challenge showed that the food he had to eat out of was not enough for him to
have a normal, productive day. He found it difficult to concentrate and complained of headaches.
Those were the side effects for a grown man but for a child they are much worse. For children to
grow, have physical and mental health and be productive, they need much more food than SNAP
can provide.
The main thing that drew me to this article was the fact that someone was willing to put
themselves into someone elses shoes. This showed that he truly wanted to show everyone the
bigger picture. Many of the things stated puts in perspective exactly how most kids in America
are living today. Stated in the article, For millions of Americans, they are struggling for months
without the promise that a large steak and steaming cup of coffee will be waiting for them at
the end of the road. This is a very sad realization but many people need to hear this. I believe
that the challenge that Bob took on could do some good if brought to a bigger scale. If a grown
man is having side effects from what is provided by SNAP, surely, they will know that a small
child will as well, if not worse.
McMillan, Tracie, and Photographs by Kitra Cahana, Stephanie Sinclair, and Amy Toensing. "The
New Face of Hunger." National Geographic. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 May 2017.

The New Face by Trace McMillan shares stories of different families and how they are facing
poverty and getting by day to day. Most of the families are what most people would consider
well off seeing that they all have cars, a house, and jobs yet still have the fear of not being able
to feed their families. But when you take a closer look, they are all living pay check to pay check
with very little food in their refrigerators. These stories are showing how the looks of poverty has
changed overtime and how the signs of hunger are being overlooked by most Americans. The
article states, By whatever name, the number of people going hungry has grown dramatically in
the U.S. Maybe this is because we are normalizing hunger for all people.
What drew me to this article was the fact that so many different lifestyles were encompassed.
There is no way for someone to say that childhood hunger only comes in one shape and size.
There are many different factors that go along with it and this article really pointed that out. The
source had many facts to go along with it to show the reader exactly what different families may
be going through as well which shows that the writer did a thorough investigation and took time
to research the topic. The article also relates to people of all kinds. It talks about people on
SNAP, people with jobs and cars, or people with a well-off house. This makes the article
relatable and shows just how much the face of hunger has changed over the years.
American Psychological Association. American Psychological Association, n.d. Web. 01 May 2017.

The article Effects of Poverty, Hunger and Homelessness on Children and Youth was written
by the American Psychological Association. It gives many fact about each topic with dates and
studies shown. The article about hunger starts with facts about how prevalent child hunger is in
America. Stating that one in four households with children face food hardships. They also add in
facts about how many families use government assistance programs, which is 1 in four as well.
The article goes on to tell facts of how hunger during childhood can affect their lives. Studies
show that hungry children will have conduct disorder, anxiety, and increased risk of developing
function problems. They also show that school age children will experience many negative
outcomes like homelessness, psychiatric distress, and behavioral problems.
The facts were a big factor in me choosing this specific article and the fact that it was published
by the American Psychological Association. It is a well written article that tells about research
results and the many outcomes of hunger. The article taught me a good amount about children
that are in school and what they may be experience or what they could experience in the future.
This information is good to know because many do not think that hunger could have such a
negative effect. Especially effects on the cognitive and motor development. Also, resources for
people that may be experiencing hunger is provided as well. This can really be impactful on
someone or families going through hard times right now. The information gives them good
websites to visit and ways that they could maybe fix their hunger problems.
