Schedule for SES Project Management, Design and Model Project at

Vocational Training School, SMK 1. Kediri

10.04.2017
Phase 1: Evaluation of the current level of knowledge and the requirements by the
teachers to agree upon more precise assignment targets.

Basic analysis: Discussion about the size and construction of the house to be planned
with the 'client' (i.e. the Teachers). Formulation of the tasks to be fulfilled by April 29 th 2017
and May 5 respectively.
The level of AutoCAD skills of the teachers proved to be more suitable for AutoCAD
Version 2012 than the skills of the expert. Instead of CAD teaching, an AutoCAD 2012
manual was given to the school and other subjects like green building principles were
preferred to be taken up.

Agreement:
Instead of an interior design project as stipulated in the Assignment Description, a small
house including interior design should be planned in concrete with ventilation openings
and a wooden roof construction. A solar warm water panel on the roof was proposed by
the SES expert.

Project Goal:
1. Plan a small house according to green building principles measuring 6 x 6 m floor
area plus uncovered bathroom, 2 x 2 m. (this was changed the following day)
2. Construct two models of the house, one in scale 1:5 with wood material and
3. one in scale 1:25, made with cardboard walls and small timber sticks for the
carpentery.

The work is divided into two groups:

Group A to plan the structure and build a 1:25 model (later changed to 1:10) with the help
of students
Group B to build the 1:5 model.

1. Week from 11.04. to 13.04.2017 (Holiday on Friday 14.04.)

Theoretical inputs by SES expert M. Messmer

A. About the principles of green buildings on April 11 and about
B. Project management on April 12: Roles and responsibilities of the client (future house
owner), the planners (architects, engineers etc.), the quantity surveyor and the contractor.

All: On the basis of project management roles and tasks there was a discussion about:
Who is responsible for what in each group? A specific task was assigned to each member
of the groups In a task list. Each step of the tasks was then organised in a time schedule.

Preliminary design:
Group A:
Practical work by the group:
1. Preliminary design on white board.
2. Drawings of the floor plan, cross sections and elevations of each side of the house in
scale 1:50 by hand and by AutoCAD in 2 D.
Group B:
Practical work by the group:
1. Make a list of materials needed for the model 1:5.
2. Prepare work drawings (shop drawings) in scale 1:50 according to final design.
3. Get panel of multiplex-board and cut it into the size of the required walls according to
the work drawings.

For each work day working hours were fixed as follows:

08.00h to 08:30h Preparation
08:30h to 11:30h Plenary meeting and/or work in groups
11:30h to 13:00h Time for prayer and lunch
13:00h to 14:45h Work in groups
14:45h to 15:00h Feedback

By the end the week there was a feedback on what was learned and what was missing in
the first week. More detailed tasks for the third week were added in the time schedule.

Completion of tasks: Nearly all tasks planned above could be fulfilled, except some delay
in 2 D AutoCAD drawings because of restricted time.

Conclusions at the end of the first week:

Starting to cut the walls before the final design was ready proved to be premature, as
exterior (-0,20 m) and interior (0,00 m floor levels were not considered. The planning and
designing process should have started at least one week before the preparations for the
models.

2. Week from 17.04. to 20.04.2017 (21.04. = Hari Kartini)

All: 17.04.2017: Extension of time schedule according to work progress..

18.04.2017:
Theoretical input by M. Messmer about
Sustainable site management and implementation of building tasks. Consideration of
material lifecycle as well as lifecycle of buildings.
Decision by group A to build the model in scale 1:10

19.04.2017 Adaptation of the time schedule to the requirements of model in 1:10.

Final design:
Group A:
3. Finish 2 D AutoCad plans and
4. Design plans in 3 D using AutoCAD. Design the roof construction.
5. Quantity survey for models: Make a list of elements to be cut out by group B for the
exterior and interior walls. Make a second list for the wooden roof construction on top of
the walls.
6. Quantity survey and tender documents for real house: Compute quantities and prices to
for cost estimate and compile tender documents.
7. After decision to build in scale 1:10: Get the cardboard needed for model in scale1:10
plus the timber for roof construction. Cut out the walls.
8. Assemble the floor plan by putting up the walls.

Task execution: Delay in 3 D planning because of lacking (wo)menpower.

Group B:
4. Cut out the openings for the doors and windows of exterior and interior walls.
5. Prepare the wood for the doors and windows and construct the frames, door leafs and
window sashes. Build the frames and panels for the ventilation.
6. Prepare the timber for the construction of the roof and ventilation frames and cut it
according to the work drawings.

Task execution: Most of the planned tasks could be executed. Hinges for doors and
windows could not be found yet.

Alterations and Conclusions: In order to allow for more details, the model scale was
changed to 1:10. Cardboard and foam is going to be used as material for the roof
construction.

3. Week from 25.04. to 28.04.2017 (Holiday on 24.04.2017)

Theoretical input on Interior Design was cancelled in favour of work on models. Interior
design issues were talked about along the practical implementation of the models.

25.04. 2017: Update of time schedule according to work progress and addition of more
detailed task descriptions. .

Interior Design
Group A:
9. Sketch the furniture in the AutoCAD floor plan. Design the furniture and discuss the
construction with group B. Position the furniture and the electrical fittings in the floor plan.
10. Cut and assemble the elements for the wooden roof construction.
11. Choose the colours for the wallpaper and the furniture.
12. Build the models of the furniture like beds, wardrobes, sofa, kitchen and bathroom
objects.

Group B:
7. Add the roof construction and prepare the material for the cladding.
8. Choose the colours for the walls to be painted because the wallpaper could not be
delivered in time.
9. Decide on the colours of the floor tiles and cut them according to scale.
10. Add the fillings into the door leafs and the glass into the window sashes. Appropriate
hinches were found.
11. Add the wheels to the basic board.

Task execution: There was considerable progress of work on the models. Along drawing
the interior design in AutoCAD, advice as to the dimensioning and arrangement of the
furniture was given by the expert.

The intention by members of both groups to coose dark and intensive colours for the walls
was questioned by Ms. Messmer because dark colours absorb too much light.

At the end of the week three teachers were absent and some tasks had to be postboned.
There was and agreement that the door and window-frames should be polished with
transparent paint Instead of being painted white.
4. Week from 2.05. to 5.5. 2017 (Holiday at May 1st)
