What is the Sabbath And What Does it Mean to Us?

Let the scriptures provide the understanding, for God’s words are not of private
interpretation.

Genesis 1:1, 31
1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 31And God saw every thing that
he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning
were the sixth day.

Genesis 2:2-3
2
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the
seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3And God blessed the seventh day,
and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and
made.

Exodus 20:8-11
8
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou,
nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates:
11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and
rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Luke 6:9
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to
do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

Matthew 12:11-13
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep,
and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on
the sabbath days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he
stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

John 5:16-19
15
The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16
And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had
done these things on the sabbath day. 17But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh
hitherto, and I work. 18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not
only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself
equal with God. 19Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things
soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

What is the Sabbath And What Does it Mean to Us?

Matthew 23:5-19
5
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries,
and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7
And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself
shall be exalted.
13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of
heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are
entering to go in.
14
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and
for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make
one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than
yourselves.
16
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is
nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the
gold?
18
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the
gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

What is the Sabbath And What Does it Mean to Us?

Matthew 16:11-13
11
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye
should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
12
Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of
the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
13
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying,
Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

Mark 1:21-25
21
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the
synagogue, and taught.
22
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority,
and not as the scribes.
23
And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou
come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
25
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

Luke 6:5
And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
